I bet Frank is fuming with it all - and who can blame him ? half of Wales WAS going to pay £15.00 a home for that fight. He will break his neck to find anyone to fill the void.

Or maybe Frank has been savvy and forecast something like this could happen with ze German and has someone already primed and ready.

I'd imagine it to be a Super middleweight with a bit of pork on them. It's too short notice to get a legit 175lb contender to step in with 24 hours to go - unless they give them 5lb extra to play with on the scales.
I remember the Inkin pull outs very well since I paid about £100 for an outer ringside seat in the Nottingham Arena and ended up watching Froch pummell Albert Rybacki instead with Witter v Bradley on the undercard! At least I didn't buy a ticket this time!

Expanding on something I wrote on the 'running order' post, I think FW would be even more wise to stick the Cleverly fight on before DeGale-Groves now because unless he's fighting someone meaningful I can see a lot of fans leaving the arena after the super middles, which would be a shame for Clev as it isn't his fault but by declaring him champion before he's even fought there is little or no suspense to his fight, it really will just be one for his own fans

can't they just reschedule it a few weeks later?

isn't that what promoters normally do? will the gerries delay & be able to get it in germany?

damn shame, as cleverly's last fight with a german based fighter was a thriller.

I doubt Braehmer would show even if they did, the guy seems like a serial no-show

Maybe if the Khan-McCloskey farce hadn't happened Sky would be able to get away with keeping it PPV, not so soon after though. I reckon Smith & co will do what's right and put it on for free. Only way either of the two lads on the main event (the real main event anyway) are going to get the publicity needed to launch their careers
FW's actual words were 'I'd rather they weren't at this stage in their careers ... But at present it's the only way we can get the money together to get these matches done.'
Is the implication that boxers are asking too much at earlier stages of their careers or that promoters are unable to maintain their margins in the current climate?

I've been thinking the former is true for a while. Consider Kev Mitchells supposed attitude when offered what he considered a derisory amount to comeback from his crushing defeat to Katsidis and fight John Murray. Amir Khan (or probably Team Khan) expects £1m per fight and if he's offered less than he'll take his ball and play elsewhere.

Us fight fans are the ones suffering in what amounts to a perfect storm - fighters want increasing amounts to fight and therefore are required to fight fewer times per year in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It's good that fighters are rewarded for their efforts, but it would appear that it is increasingly at the expense of fights actually happening. Anyone reaching European level now only fights 3 times per year while at World Level its down to twice a year. Just looking at the activity of the top 10 UK fighters on Boxrec, they have had a total of 17 fights between them in the last 12 months. Only one of the top 10 (Paul McCloskey) has fought more than twice while four have fought just once (Froch, Haye, Chisora and Barker).

Simple solution to this for FW and Sky. DeGale/Groves will sell PPV to the general punters who bought Haye/Harrison. It's a grudge match which has been well marketed by Sky so those PPV buys will likely be unaffected by Braehmer's pull out as he's prob 'just some German' to many.

To keep the anoraks like myself happy just start your PPV broadcast from 5.10pm with the first fight and pull in the best you can for Clev. How hard can it be to broadcast ther whole card? If Clev gets a resonable replacement I'd pay for that.

For those who have bought tickets Frank should give some thought to giving some kind of a discount to Clev's next fight maybe?

you're right - he pulled out of unification with shumenov last time out, didn't he?

he does seem to be faffing about. so it looks like clev will get the vacant title in messy fight with replacement opponent, then one day will perhaps defend vs a good contender, perhaps zsolt erdei.

shumenov seems to have ambition and fire, so hopefully something can be arranged between these two, maybe next year.

The market is seriously inflated, no doubt. No disrespect meant, but Paul McCloskey originally being on something like £200,000 as a world title challenger is ridiculous, as was Khan supposedly set to earn over a million for fighting him. And while DeGale-Groves is a great fight, do two fighters of their limited experience really deserve to be splitting over £400,000, just because they don't like each other?

It's Sky's fault for having foisted so many unworthy PPVs on us over the years, standard defences by the likes of Hatton or Calzaghe, non title fights featuring Khan — the fighters have come to expect far more than their fights are actually worth. Obviously Sky were happy to operate in this way, they earn well out of PPVs too, but like so much they have done this was painfully shortsighted, resulting in the situation today where nobody will fight each other without there being a huge wad of money on the table and, in some cases, fighters who have earned this kind of money in the past don't want to fight at all, or their promoters can't afford to let them fight because they can't afford to pay them under the current Sky structure, which will exist until 2012. It's a fornicating mess, but hopefully the Smith regime will address it next summer when the new deals are made. Undoing what's been done will be no easy thing though.

I'm awaiting a return call from Ticketmaster regarding a refund (my basis being that the quality of the show is no longer at the standard I paid for).

I'm not hopeful but in the unlikely event of me succeeding I'll be sure to let everyone know.

I bought tickets for the last prizefigter. When i checked the receipt I saw I had been charged £2 extra for some sort of insurance against illness, accident etc. I was pissed about this as it was wacked onto the price without me checking a box. However I am thinking in the future this may be a good way of protecting myself against this type of thing.......if you believe a card may fall apart buy the insurance and then just say your car broke down to get a refund. Has anybody ever claimed on this type of stuff before?

I am still vaguely "excited" insofar as a man who is 39 this summer can be, about DeGale/Groves and if it's still PPV and I'm in on Saturday I know full well I will be hitting that red button like a demented president.

Have sky actually confirmed its a ppv? I bought 200 quid tickets not at all happy with having one potential 50:50 on the card now. When I got tickets only two fights were annouced. Expect more than this!

Sky have been updating their site - Cleverly vs TBC is part of a PPV! Stunned! All that good praise people were attributing to Smith for the Khan thing, well..... wrong decision here.

Its not even 100% crystal clear this situation with the title. Apparently, according to the Sky Website, Frank is Lobbying with the WBO to strip Braehmer, so its not clear cut that he is stripped.

WBO Light-Heavyweight title
Nathan Cleverly v tbc

12 Rnds Welterweight

Now, they are advertising Gavin-Mutley which they ignored before...... oh, that makes it well worth the £15 :witzend:

They should have either cut the cost of the PPV to £9.95 or make it normal SKY sports.

They could drop the price or cut it back to "normal" SKY but then they would have to tell the boxers - hey lads, you know that money we said? Well half it or maybe when we're done, you'll get 1/3rd of it, good luck anyway. You really think that's going to make everyone put their full effort in?

Its not Sky that put in the massive purse bid. So its not Sky who should suffer, or the boxers, but the person who promised the wages on the back of it being on PPV.

Plenty of promoters have lost money on bills before now.

I can see when next sky contract comes up certain promotors will be getting much more dates and others very few! I would like a refund for my ticket but as CLeverly still fightimg there is no chance. PPV fans its only £15 quid what about people who paid expensive ticket money.

A problem here is that Sky are more involved in this promotion than usual if you believe the talk around the time it was announced, by which they were allegedly paying the Groves-DeGale purse. I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, then it's Sky's own money at risk, so they're bound to want to go ahead with it as a PPV
