u know what i remember that one, i remember taking it to school and someone commented on his jeri-curls..the wet look hair...

Somewhat sadly I remember that issue as well! Speaking of Olajide, I always thought he'd go further than he did. Same with his brother Tukunbo - the latter seemed a murderous puncher on the way up, but then got starched by Mendoza and drifted out of the game... think he was a renowned trumpet player or something similar?

On a different note, I tried to roll back the years and re-subscribe to Blues and Soul magazine a few weeks ago.

They've been online only for four years but are making a comeback via hard copy.

Just got it - 52 pages, 11 of which were ads; a lot of the copy was reviews.

£3.95 cover price but if you want to subscribe, it works out at seven quid an issue! (Six over the year). Crazy. Won't last five minutes.

Nowadays, it can be read in half hour tops.
I do like some of the changes Tris Dixon has brought in. And think they have very good writers.
But the style is now very lazy .... Why write when a fullpage photo can be used to pad the issue out, seems to be the mindset.

I haven't kept my old copies of BN, but from memory while the ratio of text to pictures was different, the pagination used to be lower, so I wouldn't be that surprised if it was broadly similar in terms of overall word count in reality. I actually think the publication has improved under Tris's stewardship.

Yes. Less pages .. but more to read
When they have upped the price. Its always then sold to us that they are adding more pages or improving the quality of the paper used.
Then in reality, the extra pages will only be for that weeks issue or just added photos
And I was more than happy with the lower quality paper they used years ago .. it served its purpose just fine.


As said before though. Tris Dixon has improved the paper in the short time he has been at the helm. If only he could sort the picture padding problem out

Because it seems that everytime you ask somebody here, how long they been getting the BN, they always without fail - say 20yrs plus ..
Ask them the earliest copy they have in their possesion (that they can prove) .. it`ll be 20mths at best

A big part of keeping the old BN is to reference back on. This is why I grumble so much about the padding out with photos. How the guy looked in a photo isn`t nearly as useful as knowing how he performed in the fight.
Written words describing the fight, and events around the fight are what I`m interested in. These have more relevance in years to come if I choose to look back over a guys career.

I was at the windup, (for once) I actually collect comics and have the Hulk number 1 (yes the real US edition)
However my all time low collecting momment when was when that monobrowed kunt Chris de Burgh outbid me for the chestbuster from 'Alien'
It was my aaaarrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhyoumothufukaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh momment In life.
I did up untill a few years ago have a pile of old boxing mags but then I relised that the more you own the more you have to lose.
So I decided to ditch a ton of shit BUT then last year I went and bought another famous number one comic that I have framed and vaccum sealed in my office.

Some collectors just can't helop themselves and boxing collectors are no differant.

sorry back to Boxing news, can anyone tell me why the subscriptions were so shite? in terms of delivery date? is this why its now out on a thursday?

Ian, bizarre coincidence no. 2, but I used to get Blues and Soul religiously - didn't realise it had re-emerged. The South-West column by Chris Dinnis guided me to many a fine night in Torquay and Exeter dancing the night away!

Re reader surveys they used to do them regularly but haven't for a while. As for subscription deliveries, the firm they/we employ to deal with that has recently changed; I hear the service is much improved as a result.

Vinyl is, due to original sound being analog by definition, obviously of a superior quality to digital recordings. Clearly digital formats are more convenient in most circumstances, but if a person is genuinely into music they will want--or should want--to put a bit of vinyl on from time to time, or at the very least expect club DJs to make use of it. Hence the niche will remain. I'm not so sure that magazines that are niche to begin with will be able to maintain a comparable degree of superiority; so as the non-internet generation die off the niche will become tiny and probably unsustainable, won't it?

Vinyl did make a resurgence in the Indie scene in the noughties with all the 45's that were coming out but I noticed underground electronic/dance scene seemed to gradually fade into digital download formats and many of the club Dj's now burn the various files on CD mixers for ease these days. A good bit of vinyl still sounds great but digital is very clean and airy sound and will only improve.

I don't think digital will ever be as good as analog vinyl. The grooves carved into vinyl perfectly mirror the original sound's waveform i.e. no loss of sound. Digital simply cannot do that and only provides a snapshot that always results in loss of information/sound quality. The upside of digital is longevity, Mp3s don't get dusty or scratched, and the fact they don't take up space. A DJ flying out to Ibiza for the weekend can have tens of thousands of tracks on a hard-drive, he'd need a freight plane to transport that many records. Most clubbers these days don't know the difference anyway.

Yeah nothing like a dirty vinyl groove for warm deep sound and your right about today's clubbers not knowing the difference I reckon but I'm not sure about digital not being able to ever attain the same audio property's artificially. I dunno the proof's in the pudding and I've not missed my record collection 80,90s electronic house etc since I sold them and acquired them digitally apart from it as an object

Yeah forever is a long time and the way technology moves on I'm probably being a bit pessimistic with my comment that digital will never be as good a quality as analog in terms of sound quality. I can listen merrily away to a digital dance track and not be in the slightest bit concerned but when I run a comparison with vinyl, it's night and day at the moment. Similarly if I compare a rock song on digital to a live gig the drums in particular are noticeably degraded on digital. I think we've taken this off topic. D

I get fighting fit, boxing monthly and boxing news every month; I think they are all pretty fantastic. They could all be better, but obviously anything could've more suited to the individual reading.

For example I personally would like a lot more details from boxing news' local reports- some of them are terribly short and vague, I'd like records to ALWAYS be included.

From fighting fit I think a fighter circuit of the month would be good- allowing more interaction for the reader - on some fronts find it hard to see how a non 'expert' could get much use ! Sometimes it's a little heavy on the science.

With boxing monthly I'd like ko's to be included in records- I also miss the uk results round up (with brief summaries in brackets like this) -
