It was reported widely in the mainstream press. Point being that it becomes repetitive; like he can't help himself, (or perhaps because that is what he actually believes.)

Fury chucking gay insults around and getting fined years back made the Mirror (http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/boxing/da ... on-1384065), Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2012/ ... avid-price), Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/others ... ellew.html), BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/24474326 and the Star (http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/boxing ... -outbursts

These preceded the rant in the Mail by years; ultimately he had the reputation, could have done something about it, (he even states in one article above that he'll become 'Mr Nice Guy' after being fined), but of course, he chose to ramp up his imbecility to even greater levels.

Listen, a boxer making a homophobic remark on twitter is one thing, one he apologised for and was fined for is a world away from what he said in the Mail. The stuff in the Mail was a huge controversy in comparison, I don't really see how you can argue this point, the difference was huge. People who had never even heard the name Tyson Fury became aware of him after the controversy with the Holt article, just a few weeks before the fight of his career, this soured his win, those articles about a twitter remark would have been forgotten had he not said those things likening paedophilia to homosexuality.

I'm not saying the stuff in the Mail wasn't worse than what had gone before. But to say what had gone before hadn't been reported widely is demonstrable nonsense, and what it does do is mean when he does it again, it can be relayed back to past evidence. It builds a profile which says 'these aren't actually one-offs; here's some more evidence of why this guy is an arsehole.'

I agree with you that he's brought all this upon himself and that by repeatedly saying these things he alienates himself to a lot of people. If he feels hard done by he only has himself to blame. Why do the press not portray the likes of Calzaghe, Hatton, Froch, Haye and so on as homophobic, sexist nutters? Probably because they're not.

I was in Düsseldorf that night, and there were a lot of Brits there, all going mad when he got the decision. Pubs were packed all weekend with fans singing his name. And that's without the thousands who didn't rebook after the original date. Watch him at The Euro's, or see him in real life. He's far from hated.
One of the tabloids lifted an article from our very own Terry and sat on it so it would have maximum effect when Tyson hit the top. Peter has never been anything other than truthful about his past.
Nobody mentioned Bruno's borstal and they won't go on about AJ's drugs, Tony Sims jail, Rob Mc's massive football hooligan following the next day if he beats Wlad.

It wasn't as widely reported, that's a fact. Every single one of those articles you posted are from sports sections, the Mail article went from the back page to the front page and was brought to the attention of people who would never read the sports section of a paper. How you can argue it's as well known is frankly odd to me. It was the subject of a radio phone in, even Julie Bindel had an opinion piece about Fury and boxing after those comments, Julie Bindel!

If he was genuinely popular, (and not in a 'there were people there supporting him' way but in an actual sells lot of tickets in big venues and does loads of PPV buys fashion), why did the Wlad rematch sell so catastrophically? Why was the venue downgraded from a stadium to Manchester Arena? Why have none of the big promoters made a push to sign him? Why do no advertisers seem interested? Why was he fighting in chief support fights on Dereck Chisora undercards?

The point with all the others is that people can better themselves. They can learn and change and be better people. Having once sold some weed, or spent time in borstal or jail, does not mean you're an eternal criminal. Fury gets grief in the press because he carries on saying dumb things about women, gays, Jews and so on. Ultimately Haye is right; all he's doing by repeating that nonsense is pissing money down the drain.

There's no point starting a rather dull semantic argument but to say his previous arguments were (your quote) barely reported isn't true, considering they made it into seemingly the vast majority of the mainstream press and online media.

I don't know what point you're trying to make. Fury did/said some stupid things - he was fined. It was reported widely. He did the same thing a year later. Same result. He then went on an even bigger rant a year or so later which received even more coverage due to him appearing even more mental. This carries on into last year when he also starts ranting about paedophiles, abortions, Zionist conspiracies and McGuigan being a traitor, and before you know it Tyson has painted a neat picture of himself which has changed from fairly loveable straight talking guy, (I maintain this was the general opinion of him in the early days) to boorish, bigotted oaf.

Haye-Fury sold out in minutes. Wlad got 50,000, AJ-Tyson would go through the roof. He did more PPV buys than AJ-Whyte....

So you agree with me? I didn't start a semantics arguments. You started one with me, a press release article parroted in sports sections isn't widely reported for me. When he stoped being just a sports story and became genuine national news it was well reported.

Haye Fury sold out because Haye was involved just like Haye Audley and Haye Ruiz sold out. You don't expect me to believe 22,000 turned up in Manchester because John Ruiz is a deeply popular boxer in the North West do you? Wlad got 50k because he was fighting in Germany and that's what he can get fighting anyone. And AJ Tyson would sell out Wembley because 99.9% of everyone in attendance would want to see Fury get splattered.

Fury on his own doesn't sell, hence why the rematch over here completely fell apart tickets-wise and prior to that, (and at the stage where Joshua was selling out the O2 on his own) Fury was fighting at the Copperbox. Ultimately he just isn't that popular, and it's down to a combination of things: he's a ranting, sexist, homophobic oddball. He's promoted pretty badly. People generally hate Gypsies anyway. And his biggest fight was deathly dull.

I know a lot of that seems a bit harsh, but it's true to a large extent.

Which Chisora undercard was he on? And he doesn't need to change himself, maybe some of the words. Peter Fury is the perfect example of a man who's changed, yet still got hung out to dry. It won't happen in the three cases I've mentioned.

Do you even go to fights? Haye-Ruiz didn't do 22,000. I know at least 50 going to Haye-Fury to support Tyson and that's people from a place nowhere near him. There'll have been a lot more all over the country. I watched Haye, in his European title days in front of 200 people Spud dragged in off the streets in Huddersfield. Saw AJ at The MEN when nobody bothered coming in from the bar, and the arena was 3/4 closed...

I'm pointing out that his 'successes' in relation to your perception of how popular he is have everything to do with the opponent and not much to do with him.

Again, you can't really judge a boxer's popularity by knowing a few people who like him. Referring to Haye and Joshua when they were in the much earlier stages of their career isn't really a meaningful comparison.

How about a simple one. Joshua and Fury are both world champions, but Fury is by far and away the more legitimate of the two. Why was Fury scheduled to fight Wlad at the c. 20k Manchester Arena for the world title, whereas Joshua gets the c. 80k Wembley?

No, not really. Wlad fought Tyson in the same venue that he fought Jean-Marc Mormeck in, and I don't think Mormeck is some wildly popular ticket selling superstar. Wlad can do that sort of fight in a stadium in Germany because he's Wlad and has been massively popular over there for years.

Your argument seems confused. On one hand you seem to be suggesting Tyson is treated badly by the press, people are prejudiced towards him, and that this is evidence for his lack of mainstream popularity. On the other, he fought in front of 50k against Wlad in Germany and the Haye fight sold out, hence he is popular. Which is it?

A few people I know? My point was, if we could fill a coach in York and I know they had a few in Doncaster, where else were they coming from? I doubt it was a revolutionary idea by us. I must have been hallucinating in Germany with all those fans...

Possibly because the first Klitschko-Fury contest was a stinker, plus maybe Fury had lost a lot of fans due to his rants.

Wlad had more to do with Fury winning than Fury did. Wlad couldn't have won a shadow boxing match that night. Wlad averaged 19 punches a round in that fight. He didn't even try to win. That performance lowered Wlad a lot in my eyes. It would've been less embarrassing to get knocked out in 2 or 3 rounds than it was to just give up your title with virtually no effort.

What do you mean 'everyone would have done it?' We were talking about selling tickets at the time.
