I think the point isnt to punnish Bivol himself. Its to make the war with ukrain less popular amongst Russia. Taking away all there sporting heros is a significant punishment to the Russian people and it also makes them think "why are we so unpopular right now"

While on its own it seems meaningless, What effect does the accumulation of 100s of simular decisions have on putins popularity? The answer to that question is above of my paygrade.

I want this fight, but if someone a lot smarter than me determines banning all russian participation in sport would have a meaningfull effect in ending a war id hardly be in a position to be against it.

bivol has stated himself that he has friends in both countries and wants peace as soon as possible
I think the idea behind these cross-the-board blanket sanctions is to persuade the Russian people into believing their invasion of Ukraine has severe global implications, which is against their own best interests.

For sure, at an individual level, some of these sanctions seems silly and unreasonable, but the cumulative effect of them would likely frustrate many Russian’s.

I guess the West is hoping that it’ll be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, so-to-speak.

And when it comes to banning Russian participation in sport, I’m personally against it, but I do understand what it is they’re trying to achieve.

I don’t know what else the West could do apart from these sanctions, other than engaging in direct conflict against the Russian’s, which is an exceptionally bad idea for everyone.

Anyway, any fight involving Canelo is perceived as being a significant global sporting event. So I don’t see how the West could impose a ban on Russian athletes engaged in less significant sports’, whilst allowing Dmitry Bivol to face Canelo, without boxing itself receiving severe criticism from the West.

Abel Sanchez claims that Dmitry Bivol has no chance whatsoever of defeating Canelo.

He feels the bout goes the distance though.

Filip Hrgovic-Zhang Zhilei Will Be Co-Feature On DAZN’s Canelo-Bivol Show May 7

Filip Hrgovic and Zhang Zhilei will have most of the boxing world watching when they fight to become the IBF’s mandatory challenger for its unbeaten heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk.

Boxing Scene has learned that the 12-round IBF elimination match between Croatia’s Hrgovic and China’s Zhilei will be the co-feature before four-division champion Canelo Alvarez challenges WBA light heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol on May 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. DAZN will stream Alvarez-Bivol, Hrgovic-Zhilei and other bouts to be determined as part of that streaming service’s inaugural pay-per-view event, which will cost subscribers $59.99 and non-subscribers $79.99.

Hrgovic (14-0, 12 KOs), a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, is the IBF’s third-ranked contender. Zhilei (23-0-1, 18 KOs), who won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and lost to British gold medalist Anthony Joshua at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, is ranked 13th by the IBF.

The 38-year-old Zhilei and fifth-rated Frenchman Tony Yoka were the only two of the nine IBF-ranked heavyweights approached who were willing to enter negotiations with Hrgovic’s co-promoters, Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and Wasserman Boxing, for this title eliminator. Yoka (11-0, 9 KOs) has since committed to a fight with Scotland’s Martin Bakole (17-1, 13 KOs), which was rescheduled from January 15 to May 21 at Accor Arena in Paris.

Seven other heavyweights declined the IBF’s invitation to negotiate for an elimination match with Hrgovic’s handlers due to injuries, scheduling conflicts or other reasons. Matchroom and Wasserman won an IBF purse bid February 24 with a joint offer of $650,000.

Hgrovic is entitled to 60 percent, or $390,000, because he is the higher-ranked contender. Zhilei’s side will receive $260,000, or 40 percent of the winning bid.

The 6-foot-6, 247-pound Hrgovic has won seven consecutive bouts by knockout or technical knockout. He most recently stopped Germany’s Emir Ahmatovic (11-1, 8 KOs) in the third round December 4 on the Devin Haney-Joseph Diaz Jr. undercard at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Two fights ago, Zhilei knocked down American veteran Jerry Forrest once apiece in the first, second and third rounds. An extremely fatigued Zhilei let Forrest back into their fight, though, struggled down the stretch and settled for a 10-round majority draw on the Alvarez-Avni Yildirim undercard in February 2021 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The 6-foot-6, 274-pound Zhilei won his only fight since his draw with Forrest (26-4-2, 20 KOs) on November 27. The strong southpaw stopped Craig Lewis (14-5-1, 8 KOs) in the second round that night on the Teofimo Lopez-George Kambosos Jr. undercard at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York.

Surely the USA will follow-suit with the UK's sanctions soon?

Perhaps Canelo may need to either face Bivol in Mexico, or consider looking for an alternative, substitute, opponent for his Cinco De Mayo fight-date? :o

He did want his December bout to be in Mexico.

There's still time, they can change the venue.. Azteca.

Mexico is a good safty net for this fight. I think mex could have putin currently bombing them and they wouldent turn down a canelo fight.

although if UK and USA ban russian athletes will DAZN be willing to sidestep those sanctions? could be some sketchy press.

:OhYes: True. I have several Mexican friends, and they seem to not be afraid of anyone or anything.

No Canelo vs. Bivol tickets on sale yet amidst Klitschko cancel plea

Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol tickets is yet to go on sale just under eight weeks out from the light-heavyweight showdown in Las Vegas.

Tickets through AXS.com are’ coming soon’ according to the official website. However, repeated pleas to drop Bivol from the event remain ongoing.

The Russian is a highly controversial choice given the current war situation in Ukraine.

CANELO vs. BIVOL

“I want to say thank you to all my team, my promoter, World of Boxing, and to DAZN, Eddie Hearn, and Canelo for the opportunity to make this fight,” said Bivol.

“I believe in my skills, and when I come to the ring, I believe in my victory. I’m looking forward to May 7, thank you.

“Me and my team wanted this fight, and I’m glad this fight will be in the United States and one of the Mecca of boxing.

“This is also very exciting, and it means a lot to me.

“This is very important for me. I’m fighting one of the best, if not the best, in the world right now.

“I want people to be able to see me and my skills. This is a big fight that can give me the ability to achieve my other goals and go on if I win this fight.”

Tickets should go on sale unless something drastically changes.

Imagine Canelo (if he will win this fight) dedicating the victory to the brave ukrainian people. That would make Canelo even more loved by the public.

Callum Smith is ranked no 1 at lhw for wbc title, Dominic Boesel for WBA, Meng Fanlong for IBF and Joe Smith is the wbo lhw champion.

"Easy" fights for Canelo if Bivol and Beterbiev get stripped of their titles.

We may end up seeing Canelo vs Beterbeiv instead, since he is a Canadian citizen. I don't think the Bivol fight happens. Beterbiev is old. He better fight Canelo now. (and lose a decision)

I really hope this fight happens, but have my doubts due to Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine.

If it does happen, Bivol will have to KO Canelo for a win. We all know that.

is there any chance at all bivol get's a fair shake from the judges?

beyond maybe getting a draw and a rematch if he clearly wins the fight just to get definitely fucked over the 2nd time around no matter what.

or is the corrupt money machine already set in motion and the only thing bivol could do to derail it is to knock canelo clean out?

not exactly an even playfield if one fighter knows he has to practically nail the other one to the floor while the mighty mexican boxing messiah is very well aware he can cruise on autopilot to a 'highly controversial decision'.

if none of the established parameters on how to determine the winner of a fight count can you even call it a fight?

We always talk about fair shake, but the last time he was given a gift was GGG wasn’t it?

Since then, he’s been winning fair. Whether it’s a stoppage or decision.

Even the DJ fight.
