GGG should at least try to unify the middleweight titles, he is not going to beat Nelo except for a miracle. Slowed a lot despite still having bricks in his hands.

Kudos to the tough-as-nails Murata, 95% could have been smashed in four rounds.

Good fight. GGG isn’t what he was. It’s probably a combination of age and inactivity as he footwork seemed to get looser after 3/4 rounds.

Murata fought well too but was just too easy to hit.

Glad GGG got the job done but he looked absolutely gassed most of that fight, father time has got him. Great fighter.

Yep agree, would love to see him go out on a high. He's visibly lost speed and snap, and looked more relieved it was over than elated that he'd won. Definitely don't want to see him fight Alvarez again as only one winner in that one.

If Alimkhanuly wins against Dignum and Andrade leaves the WBO middleweight, I will like to see a Qazaq derby between GGG and Qanibeg.

I think a combination of all 3.

His head movement and footwork improved as the fight went on but still weren’t what they were and Murata fought well.

A bit of Murata throttling right at the start, and lots of rust which is more limitating as years pass.

Gennadiy Golovkin rocks Ryota Murata to unify middleweight titles, moves closer to third Canelo Alvarez fight

Gennadiy Golovkin is inching closer to a long-awaited trilogy fight with Canelo Alvarez.

One day after he turned 40, Golovkin captured a second middleweight title with a ninth-round stoppage of Ryota Murata on Saturday at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) withstood some early rocky moments but turned the tide for good in Round 5 when he sent Murata's mouthpiece flying with one of his vaunted looping right hands.

The future Hall of Famer began to push Murata back while he unloaded punishment on the Japanese star. The first punch Golovkin threw in Round 9, a powerful right hand, was the beginning of the end.

Murata (16-3, 13 KOs) was on unsteady legs as he attempted to survive along the ropes while Golovkin feinted and let his hands go looking for the fight-ending shot.

The 36-year-old was able to absorb the attack for a few moments before he landed a couple of punches on a seemingly exhausted Golovkin, who then floored Murata with another right hand, prompting the corner to throw in the towel for the stoppage victory.

That was insane Golovkin is an absolute beast, way passed his sell by date but what a fckong monster, first 5 rounds were close I had Murata 3-2 up, there wasn't much in punches landed, both were giving and taking their fair share, Golovkin with those trademark chopping left hooks and Murata clearly targeting the body, Murata just looked a lot more fluid and Golovkin's work looked forced and he looked old in there but in the 6th he began to pull away constantly pummeling Murata with left hooks and sending him back with right hands, Murata uber tough though and took his medicine, that 9ty round was mental, Golovkin rocks Murata with first punch of round, right hand sending him into ropes where Golovkin teed off on him, the corner really should've saved their man Murata too tough for own good but then suddenly it looked as if Golovkin punched himself out and Murata started giving it too him before bang, a right hand separated Murata from his senses and he collapsed to the canvas where his corner threw the towel in

What a fight Golovkin clearly near the end but still got rid of a very durable champion away from home

Murata took some real hammer in there., but GGG was clearly on the decline. Age more than inactivity catching up with him.

GGG should stay well away from the juice head ginger bollock. Canrlo stops him with body work

GGG clearly past his best, but still a formidable boxing machine. Surely only 1 or 2 more fights left in him now where he can perform and win in world class

Golovkin appeared to really feel Murata's shots in the first 4 rounds or so, which would be totally normal because Murata has power, but 5 years ago he was made of iron and back then everything just bounced off of him. Now the punches are sinking in.

GGG was still very impressive putting his punches together and to use a great quote from Buncey a few years back "he measures his punches in millimetres".

Murata has got a bag full of bollocks and gave it a fierce go. My heart went out to him in the 9th when he tried a last ditch rally but got walloped by an unseen beauty of right hand that took everything out of him.

Loved that fight. Two warriors

I felt a bit sick watching that. Golovkin should retire he’s half the fighter he was before Canelo. He got hit way too much tonite and missed a ton.

Yes a truly great fighter that is toward the end now. Looked in fantastic shape as always but father time is catching up and he is not avoiding the punches he wouldn't have taken years ago......especially to the body.

Love GGG's humbleness and respect.........breath of fresh air.

Hope the trilogy with Canelo doesn't happen.
