Another one that begs the question "why did they go out for that round"...
Id double check noone on the team bet that round. and the fight before... Fine stops, just why not between rounds...

being underdog makes joe super powered, yet another doubter only makes him stronger

There weren't any other options in reality. It only seemed like Smith could have scored that stoppage earlier, but he decided to practice his boxing on the moving and covering heavy bag. Obviously, late replacements are often like that, but hopefully Smith fights someone good next. Right now he looks unimpressive to me. Won the belt by a robbery, defended it by labouring with a mismatched noname.

Geffard is the 175lbs equivalent of Mark De Mori. The epitome of a fighter with a padded record.
Joe Smith Jr. is being protected to avoid risking the Canelo payday.
The result of his bout against Geffard was inevitable, to the point the outcome of this bout was annoyingly predictable.

He was underdog against Fonfara, Hopkins, Hart and Alvarez. Does not seems protected to me. Also i think he would face Beterbiev.

I was thinking about this last night actually. That would be a big seller for Canelo.

Nah Smith’s not being protected. Come on now. This was not even the fight that was meant to be. Geff was literally a last minute replacement plucked out to save the card in general. Super Nova and his wily mascot don’t have the chops to carry a main event. He was supposed to face Callum Johnson who pulverized a man in his last fight and was the former 168lb Ring Magazine champ. Not much protecting going on.

Smith Jr. wasn’t being protected previously.
But now that Canelo is looming in the horizon, his handlers won’t attempt to match him against anyone risky.
For the record, Smith Jr. opposition in the pro ranks is much better than Beterbiev’s, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be protected going forward, because of the prospect of receiving a lottery jackpot sized Canelo payday.
