Re: Lawrence Okolie

Imagine them fighting over Okolie, nobody knows who he is and he struggles to sell a ticket, he has absolutely no profile in the mainstream media
He’s certainly becoming more cynical. Still a long way to go to be like Frank. He said that Boxxer had sent Lawrence a contract offer several months back which seemingly started the unrest with Okolie. I guess Lawrence incorrectly told them he was free. Matchroom sent Boxxer a legal letter setting it straight. Lawrence must now be saying he’s out of it again.
There really is two side too every story ,, some boxers really get shafted , no doubt ,, but some promoters can put lots of money and time building a boxer up and then get told piss off just when the money is coming in , full of vultures is'nt it ,, and thats not just at that level trainers especielly non profile good trainers get shafted all the time , .maverick23 wrote: ↑18 Nov 2022, 17:30He’s certainly becoming more cynical. Frank used to have issues when fighters left as he said in a couple of cases they’d verbally agreed extensions. Not quite the same as this.
I love Frank's video thumbnails on YouTube, absolutely raging looking like the baddie from Total Recall lolmaverick23 wrote: ↑18 Nov 2022, 17:30He’s certainly becoming more cynical. Hearn also said that Okolie got very well paid for some relatively easy fights which is a bit of a strange thing to admit as the promoter.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑20 Nov 2022, 06:49 Hearn states there was never any issues with OkolieD until he brought in new members to his inner-circle.
"Everything was positive until he started hanging around people who have no idea.' Hearn told IFL TV.
"The last thing we ever wanna do is go to court with a fighter, but I will never let someone take the p!ss out of the loyalty job we've delivered for them."
Sorry pal I disagree whilst it is a money thing it seems to have turned Okolie into being a total ****.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑22 Nov 2022, 13:58 well, i wouldnt say any of this is at odds with him being friendly to the average bloke, seems more like a money/control thing
I know you get a bit of grief for telling behind the scenes stories but I enjoy the gossip, and also think Haye is a dickhead. Just out of curiosity, you said you managed to catch some of the sparring between David and Deontay Wilder, which is something I think most of us would've loved to have been a fly on the wall for. How was Hrgovic during that sparring? A lot of us who rated him put a lot of stock into stories of him sparring in that camp, him cutting David, and some footage of him sparring Wilder and giving him work.Spud wrote: ↑22 Nov 2022, 13:55 I am extremely surprised at Okolie.
I met him something like 3 times and he was really kind & chatted to me and I went away thinking what a totally reasonable bloke he was.
But, since winning his world title he has not handled the pressure & limelight that comes with a with it.
It reminds me so much of David Haye. A lot of the time David was a really kind, and generous bloke but as soon as the cameras were turned off you found out what he was really like.
Why does he want to train in Dubai anyway?maverick23 wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 04:10 Shane McGuigan did an interview with ID boxing yesterday. He said that Lawrence wants to train overseas, preferably in Dubai now. Shane obviously can’t commit to that given the other fighters he has so essentially said that unless Lawrence changes his mind then they won’t be working together going forward.
Has it ever worked out well for a fighter when they get rid of all of their main team (trainer, promoter, manager) and then self manage or have friends/family manage them?
I'm not surprised tbh. Boxing 'managers' are absolute leeches these days. Clowns like 'S Jam' and '258' taking 25% when they know as much about boxing as my nan.maverick23 wrote: ↑22 Nov 2022, 12:23
It sounds like Lawrence wanted to save money and self-manage himself or have a mate from when he was younger do it.
I can't think of an example where it worked out well - going back to Varry Mcguigan when he left Mr Eastwoodmaverick23 wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 04:10 Shane McGuigan did an interview with ID boxing yesterday. Yeah I love the inside info too and would love to hear more storiesCyclops wrote: ↑22 Nov 2022, 18:19I know you get a bit of grief for telling behind the scenes stories but I enjoy the gossip, and also think Haye is a dickhead. Is Hrgovic the goods in your opinion? His head doesn't seem to be in the game at the moment but I can't help thinking it might be a case of 'careful what you wish for' when it comes to Hearn angling to get AJ-Hrgovic made for the vacant IBF. I wonder if Hrg suddenly gets serious and goes into that fight with his head screwed on properly AJ might get a bit more than he bargained for?
They should negotiate a cap.bripez wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 08:42I can't think of an example where it worked out well - going back to Varry Mcguigan when he left Mr Eastwoodmaverick23 wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 04:10 Shane McGuigan did an interview with ID boxing yesterday. The driving force is usually money - they don't mind giving a % when they aren't earning much but if the get big money they often change their mind.
I wonder if the 25% is still used. I’d be surprised if it is across the board.Maxi_ wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 08:16I'm not surprised tbh. Boxing 'managers' are absolute leeches these days. I’m not sure but I’d imagine he may want to base himself there for tax reasons. There may be some upside for him if he says that’s where he lives/works.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 05:50Why does he want to train in Dubai anyway?maverick23 wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 04:10 Shane McGuigan did an interview with ID boxing yesterday. Because it’s warm all year round, has great gyms, no income tax, 5% VAT, 60p per litre petrol and makes that shit hole UK look like a third world country.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 05:50Why does he want to train in Dubai anyway?maverick23 wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 04:10 Shane McGuigan did an interview with ID boxing yesterday. All makes sence , UNLESS your knocking on the door for world title honors , big money and need a good trainer and most of all good sparringWee Tommy wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 09:19Because it’s warm all year round, has great gyms, no income tax, 5% VAT, 60p per litre petrol and makes that shit hole UK look like a third world country.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 05:50Why does he want to train in Dubai anyway?maverick23 wrote: ↑23 Nov 2022, 04:10 Shane McGuigan did an interview with ID boxing yesterday. Don’t know if any of that would make sense to a boxer looking to earn a lot of money and have a happy training environment![]()
