Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. will meet in a middleweight rematch on June 17 in Manchester, England, sources told ESPN.

Smith (33-3-1, 20 KOs) scored the upset win over Eubank when they fought in January, a fourth-round TKO that included two knockdowns. One month later, Eubank tweeted that he exercised his contractual right to an immediate rematch.

However, there remained doubt the return bout would take place next. Eubank reengaged in talks with Conor Benn -- they were set to fight in October before a banned substance was found in Benn's system; the WBC later cleared Benn of intentional doping -- but ultimately pushed forward with his opportunity for revenge.

"I told you all week, don't be surprised if I stop him," Smith, 34, said after the fight in Manchester. "I don't know whether it was an accumulation of shots or that one punch. If Chris wants the rematch, I will do it."

Smith, a 2-1 underdog, pinned Eubank in a corner and dropped him with a flurry of punches. When he beat the count, he was on unsteady legs. Moments later, he was on the canvas again, and this time, the referee halted the fight without a count.

"I felt I could have gone on," said Eubank, "but big respect to Liam."

Smith, who fights out of Liverpool, is a former junior middleweight titleholder who lost his belt to Canelo Alvarez via ninth-round KO in September 2016. "Beefy" moved up to middleweight for the Eubank assignment and is now rated No. 5 at 160 pounds by ESPN.

Smith scored a 10th-round TKO of former champion Jessie Vargas in his previous outing. His younger brother, Callum Smith, is a light heavyweight contender who also lost his title (at super middleweight) to Alvarez.

Eubank (32-3, 23 KOs) is the son of British legend Chris Eubank Sr. The 33-year-old's other two losses came against Billy Joe Saunders (before BJS won his first title) and George Groves in a super middleweight title bout. Eubank is rated No. 9 by ESPN at middleweight.

The chief-support bout will feature Franchon Crews-Dezurn in a defense of her undisputed super middleweight championship against Savannah Marshall, sources said.

In my view he was taking control before he got stopped in an action packed fight, and I definitely want to see how it plays out again, especially if it starves oxygen from two time drug cheat what's his name.

Liam Smith v Chris Eubank Jr: Rivals to fight again in Manchester on 17 June

Liam Smith will fight Chris Eubank Jr in a rematch on 17 June at the Manchester Arena.

Liverpudlian Smith, 34, beat Eubank in January via fourth-round stoppage in a bitterly-contested middleweight fight.

Eubank, 33, sought revenge and activated the rematch clause shortly after the third loss of his career.

The co-main event is expected to be Briton Savannah Marshall against undisputed super-middleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn.

Marshall, 31, has not fought since she lost her own grudge match against Claressa Shields in October, but has a second chance to become undisputed champion.

American Crews-Dezurn holds all four world titles in the division and the only defeat on the 35-year-old's record is by Shields in 2016.

Smith and Eubank Jr resume hostilities
When the first bout between Eubank Jr and Smith was announced, few expected it to generate the attention it did.

But a bubbling rivalry exploded in fight week as both boxers hurled unsavoury jibes at each other in a bizarre Manchester news conference.

Eubank wore a rainbow armband at the weigh-in in response to homophobic taunts from Smith, sparking a conversation about boxing and its responsibility to create an inclusive sport.

Both men were fined by the British Boxing Board of Control for their behaviour.

The fight itself was explosive, as Smith produced a blistering performance to blow Eubank away in just four rounds. The display was another fantastic win for Smith, who has accumulated four stoppage wins in a row.

Eubank was at his preferred weight, while Smith had fought most of his career at light-middleweight.

The rematch seemed an obvious choice for both men after their profiles soared, but Conor Benn almost derailed plans.

Talks were held about rescheduling their abandoned fight in Abu Dhabi this summer, but the British Boxing Board of Control's insistence they would not back Eubank fighting Benn in another country ultimately forced discussions to be abandoned.

And so Eubank returns to the scene of his worst defeat, aiming to resurrect a career that could be permanently ended by another win for the resurgent Smith.

Be interesting to see how Smith’s camp works as Joe McNally has the Taylor fight in New York the week before and I presume they’d flight out at least 2 weeks before the fight.

Repeat or revenge?

That is the question set to be answered on Saturday, June 17 when bitter rivals Chris Eubank Junior and Liam Smith return to Manchester’s AO Arena in a high-stakes rematch presented by BOXXER, in association with Wasserman Boxing – and live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Months of build-up and high tensions in fight week set the stage for a classic encounter in January, with 20,000 fans inside the sold-out Manchester Arena joined by a huge television audience which set a new domestic pay-per-view record for the weight class.

With both fighters eager for a definitive finish, there was little in the way of a feeling-out process. Heavy leather was traded from the opening bell – and it was all over twelve minutes later, the referee stepping in front of Eubank Jnr to wave the fight off in the fourth round.

The result did little to settle tensions between the two men and they rose further with speculation that one of the knockdowns had been the result of an illegal elbow strike.

On June 17, that friction will intensify as both men return to the Manchester Arena for a clash which will change the course of their careers.

For Eubank (32-3, 23 KO’s), victory means redemption and will put him back on track for showdowns with elite names on the world stage.

Chris Eubank Jr said: “Liam had the night of his life against me in January, the stars aligned for him in Manchester, and he went away with a big win.

“But lightning doesn’t strike twice. If he even has the slightest thought that he can beat me again, then great, because it will be his undoing.”
For former WBO champion Smith (33-3-1, 20 KO’s), a second win will stamp his authority on the domestic division and set the stage for huge future world title opportunities.

Liam Smith said: “I know he tried his best to go a different route but the fight is on now and I am looking forward to hearing what he has to say for himself in the build up. Let’s see what angle he comes with this time.
“He can’t come with angles about how he’s never been hurt, he’s never been dropped, he’s never been stopped, because he just had all three of those things happen to him in one night and it was me who did it to him. So I’m interested to see what he comes with this time and I’m also interested to see where he goes after I beat him again on June 17th.”

Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing, Kalle Sauerland, said: “Hell hath no fury like a Eubank scorned and there was no chance Chris was going to let this one lie. He’s a wounded animal and this makes him extremely dangerous. No sooner had the fight finished, then Chris made it clear that he wanted to trigger the rematch clause and on June 17, he gets his shot at revenge. Smith, you have been warned. Beast mode is on!”

I liked Smjth Eubank as a fight when it was announced first time around and like it again. Haven’t heard concrete details on the weight yet but assume it’s at 160 again and assume the terms of the rematch were agreed in the original contract meaning it’s been fairly easy to make. Almost to a point that if Eubank wanted it, it kinda had to happen.

I thought Smith had it in the first fight and just don’t see Eubank as a pure enough boxer to be able to turn it around. I think someone who properly came through the amateur system and reached this kind of level legitimately would be able to have the savvy to work out a style to beat Smith but that ain’t Eubank Jr.

Quite like the Marshall Dizzerne match on the undercard as it is one of the women’s fights I’ve wanted to see.

I’d imagine this is the card they want to make Clarke v Wardley as well.

The first fight was good. The atmosphere was amazing. I didn't go, but that's all I've heard from people that did go.,

I'm gonna try getting tickets for this one.

I was looking forward to the first fight. Eubank had a wave of momentum following the fallout of the Benn fight and the stuff during fight week got me excited for it.

Even though I think Eubank Jr wins this one, I’m not as bothered by seeing it strangely.

May be one that I don’t plan on watching but do end up getting up for during fight week.

Could be just mind games but Eubank seems in denial about the first fight. ‘Referee stopped it too early, caught me with an elbow, Smith didn’t stop me the referee did’ etc. If he doesn’t believe he did anything wrong then he won’t know how to fix it.

I presume he’s sticking with RJJ as it’s about 7 weeks out and we haven’t heard of a new trainer.

Hearn said the money for this was going to be poor for Eubank.

Given they will do guaranteed 15,000+ sales and a couple of hundred thousand PPV buys, I'd love to know how many of his fighters will get better paid than Eubank and Smith will for this fight?
