And the guy has no background in boxing and knows nothing about it. And his obsession with women’s boxing is at best naive; it’s awful and will never bring in viewers. How did a huge company like Sky Sports decide to invest in this clown!?tony1234 wrote: ↑12 Jan 2025, 12:46All the so called big names they signed turned out to be rubbish or not an attractionJamesPhilips wrote: ↑12 Jan 2025, 11:58 The bill was terrible. Considering what he started with and Hearn taking all Sky's stars to Dazn with him, I think he's done OK. Though I realise ok doesn't cut it when you're responsible for showcasing boxing on the country's biggest sports channel.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑12 Jan 2025, 12:50And the guy has no background in boxing and knows nothing about it. Good shout that. I think they are both with Kevin Maree. Do you think he’d match two of his unbeaten fighters?
I agree with this. It’s easy to say he’s done a shit job but he couldn’t have got the Sky gig at a more difficult time.WestEndRiot wrote: ↑12 Jan 2025, 17:09Considering what he started with and Hearn taking all Sky's stars to Dazn with him, I think he's done OK. As for the obsession with women, I think that's more of an obsession by the media generally and will certainly get him credit from the higher ups at sky, if not the public

When Hearn took over the Sky deal there was no alternative like there has been in the past few years with TNT. Frank set allegedly up & none of the other promoters had TV. It was either Hearn on Sky or Warren on allegedly so understandably everyone wanted to go with Hearn.
Since Shalom’s taken over Sky there’s not been many readily available fighters to sign up as most were already tied up with Hearn or Warren. DAZN literally lose hundreds of millions per year. How can anyone compete with that?
CBS in two stadium fights, as well as a classic in Bournemouth against Chamberlain, a unification in Riyadh against Ramirez, Wardley-Clarke, Buatsi-Azeez, Brook-Khan, Shields-Marshall, Jonas-Mayer, helped make Olokie a 2 weight champion, brought through Azim & Simpson, delivered Price a world title fight at home, the Smith-Eubank fights, got Bakole into a great position by landing him the Anderson fight.
I don’t think he’s done anywhere near as bad as many seem to suggest he has.
I agree with you it’s not been a good enough standard. I just don’t believe any promoter would have made a success of it given what they were up against.maverick23 wrote: ↑15 Jan 2025, 07:03Re: being able to compete with DAZN losing hundreds of millions per year the boxing loss on that will be a small amount. Shalom got off to a good start on Sky. Delivering Eubank/Williams, Taylor/Catterall and Khan/Brook over a couple of months was excellent.
However in the 20+ years I’ve been watching near enough every show on regular Sky Sports, last year was the worst for U.K. boxing on the channels. Very few shows (wasn’t it 3 shows across the last 6 months from the U.K.?) - I’d imagine fewer than any other year since Sky started showing boxing and whilst there were some good fight nights, in my opinion it wasn’t good enough for the biggest sports broadcaster in the U.K.
You mention one of the highlights being delivering Price a world title fight at home - I’m not sure I’d call that highlight as the show was pretty crap. As was the Price/Jonas double header at the end of the year which was saved really by the Cutler fight being v.good.
I think it was 8 U.K. shows last year on regular Sky Sports. 2 of which headlined by Lauren Price.
For me he’s got a real big 6 months coming up before the end of his deal at Sky. The show on Saturday was poor in my opinion although not helped by the ref in the main event. The next show should be better.
There have been a couple of eras I’ve really enjoyed with Sky Sports boxing. About 20 years ago we pretty much got a show a week (sometimes multiple) with them usually having very thin undercards. You’d forget about crap cards because there would be another show 6 days later. Then I enjoyed the time Eddie was sole promoter as the quality of shows on the whole was better and we’d get c.18/20 a year.a force wrote: ↑16 Jan 2025, 04:08I agree with you it’s not been a good enough standard. I think they’ll renew his deal. Eddie & Frank are tied up with DAZN & there’s realistically no one else.
They just need to stay at it until the Saudi’s get bored which I think will happen at some point. A lot of the big stars in boxing like Usyk, Fury, Joshua, Canelo & Crawford are at the end of their careers.
I can’t see the Saudi’s holding the same enthusiasm when they’ve got fighters like Kabayel, Bakole & Jalolov leading the heavyweight division.
They’ve just got to tick over with CBS, Clarke, Azim, Simpson, Price, Dubois & anyone else I’m forgetting for a while until there’s more fighters available
I genuinely liked the old Friday fight night format. It baffles me when I see it ridiculed by some.maverick23 wrote: ↑17 Jan 2025, 02:57There have been a couple of eras I’ve really enjoyed with Sky Sports boxing. Now we’re literally getting fewer regular SS U.K. shows than ever before and several of them are poor. Would someone else have done a better job? Possibly not. The only other one in the U.K. would have been the Sauerlands but they seem more focused on Misfits now and haven’t exactly done much with channel 5.
I find Shalom really disingenuous. Both Hearn and FW will openly pretty much do anything for money. Shalom said he was going to change the way judging worked after Catterall/Taylor yet nothing happened. That’s fine by the way but don’t say it to begin with. When Frank and Eddie were doing Saudi shows Shalom was saying he was focusing on the U.K. market which was the most important. Yet he’s straight in with his fighters on Saudi shows when he got the chance giving us probably the worst year on regular SkY Sports for U.K. boxing we’ve had last year.
I can’t see Sky Sports going with another U.K. promoter. I think they’ll either stay with Shalom or move away from regular U.K. shows. Shalom signed several on the 2020/2021 U.K. Olympians to big deals which is probably why they haven’t been active and you could question some of the matchmaking. Some of those will be wanting bigger deals now hence why Shalom I can’t see Shalom favouring U.K. boxing over Saudi money again.
