i havnt taken any stuff from him. I form my own opinions

I have a lot of different articles, books, magazines, films, websites i can get my opinion from.

- O and ted spoon wasnt live at the fight(i mis read) he simply read ringside reports about the fight.

- monte has some very good articles and defintley knows a good deal about boxing and clearly understans the fight game, the only downside i see in him and others is he is very biased in certian issues and isnt fair in his assesment about certain fighters.

So, if you think Monte knows "knows a good deal about boxing and clearly understands the fight game" you must agree with his comments viz
"boxing is a dying art form"
"good defence is a rarity"

To me, that's just utter bollocks.

I guess no one having seen much (if anything) of those old lads in action adds to the fantasy.

So, if it all comes from books etc, how about posting a selection of quotes from these sources you have to back up your story about the Walcott - Simon bout???? Like you and Spoon, I've never seen the fight so I'd be interested to see what your absolutely rock solid opinions are based on. And it can't just be what Spoonbill said as he hasn't seen it, remember.

Even Monte tries to quote real sources...

actually i think mayweather is one of the greatest ring technicians of all time and is a future all time great if he doesnt trip over his ego.

I think much of this opnion that many of us have about "old time" fighters being generally better than current fighters has grown from the knowledge of the sport, and a little bit of common sense. While I can only speak for conditions in the US, boxing is a dieing sport. There are very few boxing gyms and trainers left, and only a fraction of the number of boxers that there were just 50 years ago. Unless you live in a good sized city there are probably NO boxing gyms in your city.

I live in Akron, Ohio and boxing was taught in my school when I was in jr high in the early 70's. At that time there were 6 or 7 boxing gyms, each with decent trainers. Today there is one, that I am aware of. The golden gloves boxing tournament was a major attraction as late as the mid 70's, and used to draw several thousand for the finals at the downtown Akron Armory. Now the golden gloves tournaments are regional, due to the lack of fighters, gyms and trainers.

Now if you can explain to me how boxers could be better now -- when there are so few of them, and there are so few trainers -- than they were 50+ years ago i would be in your debt, because I could read more of these posts and not get upset when old-time fighters are dissed.

im lookin

. just checked the new york times, but that wasnt the paper, the NY times had walcotts bout with tiger jack fox.
