re Hopkins not going to the UK because of the Hatton fans - Hopkins would never give away an advantage anyway, already backed out of a Calzaghe fight in 2002, and wants to play up the Hagler comparison.

I hope Hopkins loses PPV buying fans for his comments. Methinks a lot of white Americans buy boxing PPVs. I hope they remember what he said.

I hope Hopkins loses fans for the dreadful display against Wright and the admission that the pre fight needle was all hype for a fight that - we all knew - would never catch fire.

Let's not forget though, Lewis never wanted to lose to a white heavyweight (Golota) though I don't think he was as public about it and many; and obviously the heavyweight championship gets an audience when there's a real champ. "White heavyweight" though has connotations of mediocrity and isn't as broad as "white man".

I'm sure he never WANTED to lose to a Polynesian heavyweight (Tua), either. Or any black ones, for that matter.

What's the story here? I've never heard anything like this...

respect for what, exactly?
Respect for another country and its people….
I dont consider keeping quiet during a piece of music to convey respect for a country.
Its like wearing a poppy, how does that convey respect?

I would say actually knowing and understanding what happened in history and learning lessons from that knowledge shows more respect than getting all angry about some people not wanting to wear a plastic flower for a couple of days

Yeah I never heard anything like that either and I followed Lennox's career pretty closely.

It isn’t a case of just “not keeping quiet” though is it.

“Booing” is an actual act of expressing one’s dislike. Your strange example of not wearing a poppy doesn’t suggest you don’t have respect for those that died in the war – it says nothing at all - you just aren’t wearing a poppy. It’s something your not doing rather than actively doing.

Booing an anthem suggests you actually dislike the country in question (the anthem being representative of the country and its people).

You wouldn’t have a problem if someone stood next to you started booing during the silence on Remembrance Day either then presumably? According to you they wouldn’t be showing any disrespect by just “not keeping quiet” would they……

Personally I’d lamp them.

I think it was something like "I'll never lose to a white man"

It was a Boxing Monthly writer about ten or more years ago who referred to something that Lewis said. Suggesting he'd be fired up for this one, etc. It was to do with losing to a white heavyweight, what I remember.

I for one will never support Hopkins again. His comment was a slap in the face to any white fans he has.

I do remember Lennox making a similiar comment. Unfortunately there are probably more black boxers who feel this way then don't.

So it was a writer SUGGESTING it, rather than Lewis saying it?

Do you know what I think is a disgrace then - the American's letting the English outnumbered them so much even though the American boxer in question is definitely the best boxer on the planet at this moment in time, and that's forgetting the fact that this was in Floyd's home-town and country.

no, it was either a preview or an editorial that mentioned Lewis saying he didn't want to lose to a white heavyweight. Lewis had to have said it for them to refer to it.

You know Tyson was done when he of all people ALLOWED a white boxer to beat him. I can imagine he would have hated the idea when he was still an ambitious fighter.

Now that ive thought about it, i would ban the playing of National Anthems at all sporting events.

There is something oddly unsettling, in my mind, about 20,000 people standing in silence to a piece of music that somehow is supposed to represent a country and all of its history.

Its 1 step away from having another rally in Nuremberg, you bunch of facists

It's asking for trouble, too, and the promoters must know this. It's not used all the time, so what is the criteria for a fight having it?

However Clinton Woods' fans respect anthems when he fights, so it's not all British fan bases who do it.

the british one is an embaressment so that would suit me but at the end of the day people should be able to stand there in silence while a national anthem is being played without booing or jeering.
it just so happens that of all the nations on this planet britain and the u.s (along with the soviet union) did more to fight fascism than anyone else so i`m not sure who the fascist comment was aimed at :-?

Its not about booing an anthem, isnt it more about creating a hostile environment for the opposing fighter?

As for the anthem, isnt there something about crushing all scots? Well if that isnt rascist, what is?

I'm confused :(

So who's fault actually was it?

Football hooligans?
The English?
Non-boxing fans?
Chelsea?
The NF?

Bunch of sanctimonious pricks on this thread!

Why the fornicate do English football hooligans get the blame for everything? And hark at Mr they aren't real boxing fans, just jumped on the band waggon! fornicate off!

People travelling half the way round the world without tickets just to follow a home country boxer and they wouldn't know Mayweather until two weeks ago? So why didn't this many people turn up against Collazo/Castillio etc. if they were just following him blind? The fact that he was taking on the P4P best fighter in the world is the reason that, that many people travelled in the fornicating first place!!

Don't know about you but whenever I go to the boxing and the football it is never two seperate crowds. In fact speaking from experience I would say that the boxing crowds are a bit more "naughty" so to speak that your average football crowd.

Once again the Septics are feeling hard done by that the big bad British (thats for the jock on this thread because there was PLENTY of Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and Irish there but they all kept quiet I suppose? ). Well fornicate 'em!! The booing was done to wind them (Americans) up and it certainly worked and I for one have not stopped laughing at the complete and utter total over reaction of boh the yanks and the leftie Brits ever since!!

fornicate me a bit of booing and we have suddenly disgraced every man, woman and horse you have there and all your war dead! Seriously get the fornicate over yourselves you bunch of snivelling little girls!!

And I always love the quote of they can't handle their beer!! Not on the evidence I saw.

Sorry if we have ruined your inbred views that we all speak like Prince Charles and like a nice cup of Earl Grey with our cucumber sandwiches. That couldn't be further from the truth.

Anyway i'm off to invade a small country for their oil................

How many arrests were there, not many I bet! Not compared to if 25,000 english fans went to a footie match and they lost... I dont think so anyway.

But isn't Glen Johnson's national anthem Regae music? They might not know its a national anthem.
