From my perspective, these are no anomalies, but changes to moderately compensate for former unjustified advantages and handicaps. Please look at the boxers involved from this perspective of either boxing under the shelter of their home promoter or risking to box on the opponent's turf.

Objectivity (Prediction statistic) has probably increased... otherwise, I can't see any reason for the change.

Martin, the two other changes (heavyweight division weight and inactivity handling)... Those changes alone, would they impact the rankings much?
Prediction was not the driving force here - the achievements of foreign turf boxers were obviously affected. This is some compensation.

The other corrections only affected some spots - see V. Klitschko, Mormeck and Haye (by up to 100 points).

These are not moderate compensations. They are ludicrous. None of these penalties or bonuses are appropriate unless a controversial decision was involved. When Povetkin beat Chambers, he won a completely uncontroversial decision. Why should he be penalized just because his promoter promoted the card? It makes no sense to apply this sort of factor across the board.

Wanting to put some sort of "home turf" factor into your rankings is understandable but it has been proven time and time again that there is no way to sensibly incorporate this into an automated ranking system. All you have done is taken a near-perfect ranking system (maybe as perfect as a computerized system can possibly be) and turned it into a system that has personal meaning for you but will hold no credibility with anyone else. There is absolutely no logic that can justify Monte Barrett at #7 or Povetkin at #14. None at all. It is absurd at face value.

Please reconsider this change, or at least recalibrate it and reduce the effects before making it live on the website. Before this change I felt that the BoxRec rankings were the best in the world, even better than The Ring. Now I don't think they are worth much at all.

Surely you aren't considering chess sites, or MMA ones.. AHEM :)

Anyway, juji, the Journal of Sports Sciences ran a similar (not exact) study on this... and the statistics shown above correlate with what they actually found.

HOWEVER, I do agree with you. When the fight is a blow-out or a clean KO, I can't see making any pre-bout adjustments. It's not worth it. There may still be a home turf advantage in those cases (pre-bout preparation, etc.), but obviously it didn't factor much in the ring, especially w/ the KO (It was shown that a 50/50 fight ended up being a 57/43 fight in the event of a KO) but that is too small of a difference to matter much.

I think this should be limited to non-clear decisions, but even then, who's to say when its a total rip-off and when its just?

... even this ratio of 57/43 = 1.33 would matter massivly - my implementation uses a common value of 1.5 for all stopped bouts.

But, I will extend the analysis to both specific stop decisions with probably enough bouts behind (KO, TKO, and the rest of stop decisions as DQ, TD, RTD, I guess), in order to see a significant difference.

I think it is important to be as specific as possible if the data is available.

LOL, I meant specifically boxing rankings. They were the best boxing rankings available, but now they are horribly flawed.
Anyway, juji, the Journal of Sports Sciences ran a similar (not exact) study on this... and the statistics shown above correlate with what they actually found.
I remember this. However, these statistics are being horribly misused in this case. The numbers we're using here are averages. You could say that, on average, there is an advantage for the home fighter. However, that doesn't mean you can just go and apply this factor across the board, because this number could vary WILDLY for different promoters or fighters, or even fight-to-fight. Just applying the same number to all fights is horribly damaging to fighters who haven't received these advantages, of which there are probably very many. There is simply no way to apply this sort of advantage fairly. In attempting to "average it out" you are just unfairly helping some people and hurting others.

In addition, the data in this article seems far too nebulous to use in any meaningful way. What was their methodology? What do they consider a 50/50 fight? I would naturally assume a promoter would have most of their fighters winning on their cards because they'd be setting them up with fights against lesser opponents.

jujigatame,

a 50/50 fight is assumed to be a fight, where the pre-bout ratings (home advantage not regarded) is at the same level for both opponents. In spite of this the win ratio observed is 2.3 to 3 in favour of the home boxer.

The numbers might be different for different promoters and situations, but this arguement is valid for every single bout and all it's result informations:

The scores and so a MD and SD depend on the judges, a TKO, TD, DQ and even a KO decision depend on the referee and the doctors ... All these indicators are valid only in an average of bouts.

But it would be ignorant to neglect these parameters for the rating.

You do not have sufficient data to make the inference that this advantage is the same everywhere. It is patently absurd to assume this advantage is the same for ALL fights promoted by ALL promoters in ALL countries. In addition, you are ignoring the fact that promoters will attempt to set up advantageous fights for their fighter. This means that even if a fight is 50/50 by your standard, a promoter will likely have attempted to give their fighter a favorable matchup in terms of the styles of the fighters.
The numbers might be different for different promoters and situations, but this arguement is valid for every single bout and all it's result informations:
You are practically conceding my point here. Don't you see that if these factors vary wildly for different promoters and situations, and you are attempting to create a system that accurately ranks individual fighters (often with large effects coming from a single fight) that applying the same penalties and bonuses to every fight is going to create horrible results?
The scores and so a MD and SD depend on the judges, a TKO, TD, DQ and even a KO decision depend on the referee and the doctors ... All these indicators are valid only in an average of bouts.
That's exactly the problem!! In a system where 1 fight can have HUGE consequences on the rankings, just saying "it works out on average" does not excuse the many times it will cause bizarre, ugly effects to the most visible rankings in the system. I mean, for God's sake, the promoter doesn't even select the officials in many bouts, especially in the US!! Can't you see how horribly flawed this is?
But it would be ignorant to neglect these parameters for the rating.
It would be foolish not to recognize that there is no way to implement these sorts of "home field" penalties in a way that will not create bizarre anomalies and hurt the overall credibility of the system. I find it quite telling that have absolutely no response or justification for the various questionable results I pointed out earlier. If that is not evidence that you are hanging on to this system just out of sheer stubbornness, I don't know what is. At the very least you need to take it offline and work on some of the anomalies before releasing it again. You have taken what was a wonderful tool and possibly the best boxing ranking system in the world, and essentially introduced a random factor that makes it worthless.

Juji makes two great points. One I spoke of earlier (not being the same on all fronts w/ all promoters), but one I did not think of... the one where promoters make great matchups based on styles. I hadn't thought of that one.

I'd be interested in seeing a study or some kind of statistical data that looks at outliers (standard deviation)

jujigatame,

as a consequence of all your arguements you would not be able to rate any bout, as all parameters vary wildly on a individual base.

All rating is based on a statistical average of the parameters used.

This is ridiculous. There was no need for these changes. You had an excellent system. These changes have turned it into a joke. You have absolutely no rebuttal for any of the serious issues I have brought up.

Your response of "well then we can't rank anything" is childish and silly. Giving certain values to KOs, and points decisions makes sense and is the foundation of any computerized ranking system. We can all agree on that. All fights end in a particular way, and those different ways have different values. When people watch a boxing match, they can say "that guy just got the KO" or "that guy just won a close decision" and the rankings can take it into account based on the result of the match. If they say "the judges were terrible" or "the ref was biased" there is NO way to apply that based on the data we have in the BoxRec database, and to attempt to is just madness.

At the end of the day, a ranking system needs to have transparency, and it needs to pass a sanity check. A serious boxing fan needs to be able to look at it and say "yes, that makes sense". These rankings fail that test. You show any serious boxing fan these rankings with Monte Barrett 7 spots ahead of Alex Povetkin, and they will laugh and call your rankings worthless. There's just no way to explain it logically using his record.

The tail is wagging the dog here, you have effectively decided that theory is more important than practice. Are you really so blind or stubborn that you can't see a problem here?

There's a bug right now I believe.. if a show has more than one promoter, the system is probably just taking whichever one is indexed first. The results will flip-flop with each given day until this is resolved.

Yes, that's another think I was wondering about, co-promoted cards. Also, what if both fighters have the same promoter? The system would assume no advantage to either, but the promoter may still favor the fighter with more star potential.

The whole thing is based on so many tenuous assumptions. I cannot believe more consideration wasn't given to this change before the old rankings were wiped away.

Right. A German going to fight Chris John in Indonesia would likely face more of an uphill battle than an Irishman fighting in Northern Ireland, or a Dane fighting in Austria.

I guess another argument could be that you sometimes have guys that will fight on the same promoter's card several times but have no real affiliation w/ them, and for this, they could be wrongfully penalized.

You know, I don't think it'd be a bad idea to factor that into an all-time rating... but it doesn't really make sense for a current rating.

The promoter advantage is removed for technical reasons.

There was a bug for multiple promoter shows in the last release - as reported - so these bouts were regarded multiple - in random sequence additionally.

A bug fix iintended was too ressource consuming.

Most of the outliers, some argued with, were caused by this multiple promoter issue in the last release. So these outliers would have been corrected.

But now it will take some time to find a technical solution with less ressource demand.

The bug with the multiple promoter bouts is fixed now.:

- decisions on points with factor 1.32
- stopped bouts with factor 1.23

This compensates for 50% of the effective observed value.
