Are you referring to George Chuvalo, who Henry Cooper "did not want to meet even socially"?

Dion Murphy got the decision against Famechon. Murphy was a lightweight while Famechon was a featherweight.

Famechon started slowly winning on 3 of his first 6 fights. 2 of them were draws. Went on to great things though.

Charkey Ramon had to retire because of an industrial accident that left him with a badly damaged shoulder. It was not a matter of choice.

The errrrm "industrial accident" didn't ensue as a result of Dave jumping out of a window when the cops raided a joint he happened to be frequenting did it?. I believe they wanted to throw the book at him :OhYes:

He was working as a dogman on a construction site when a protruding girder hit his shoulder, shattering it.

Many boxers worked as doormen at the illegal casinos at that time, but they were never raided because the proprietors all contributed to Askin's "bag."

Askin's bag was picked up from city tatts by a night wireless car. I never went into a casino but knew boxers who worked at the 33.

Little bloke I worked with in the public service in the 70s suicided after betting on tick at another casino.

Dunlop with 28-4 when he fought Torres in what would be Torres' second last fight. Dunlop passed away years ago. Only lived to his mid 50s.

Some great fighters of the past that all came from the small community of Palm Island, George Bracken, Jack Hassan, Alfie Clay and Doug Sam. Ron Richards was also sent to Palm Island as punishment and spent the last 19 years of his life on the Island training young fighters.

The small community of Cherbourg also produced some great amateurs, the community of 1500 had 3 fighters compete in the 1962 empire games (commonwealth games) in Perth. Jeffrey Dynevor, Adrian Blair and Eddie Barney (the son of Eddie Gilbert, who bowled Bradman for a duck). Jeffrey Dynevor won the Gold Medal in the Bantamweight division but never turned pro.

My uncle Wayne Brackin fought Johnny Frog on tv ringside as amateurs. Have got any footage of my uncles fighting so would like to know if I could find a copy of that. My other uncles Lex fought Brian Janssen in the amateurs and Tom fought a lot of good fighters including David Hall. Heard good things about them so maybe tv ringside is my only option.

Who can forget the fights commentated by the 2 Ron Casey's, firstly TV Ringside on Monday nights with the Melbourne Ron and Thursday Night Fight Of The Week with the Sydney Ron from the 60's and 70's.

Mum and I were glued to the old Thorn Atlas black and white tv when the fights were on....

Some of my favourite fighters were from that era.... :box:

Big Jim West, Dinky Davis, Henry Nissen, and some great overseas visitors such as Toro George, Kid Snowball and Manny Santos to name a few....

Johnny Galluzzo, Paul Moore I better stop now or I will be here all night....

Did anyone buy World of Boxing before it folded? I used to buy it when I first moved to Australia. It seemed to be the magazine equivalent of Groundhog Day, with every month's edition rehashing the career of Jeff Fenech and Lionel Rose. It was scary how repetitive it got! Thank God someone pulled the plug.

luckily for him as a slow starter he fought in the day of 15 rounders...nobody could beat him in the 'championship' rounds,
he also retired at the right time...well done Barry and thanks for the entertainment!
You won't get an argument from me on how tough Barry Michael was. I don't think he was ever knocked off his feet to begin with.

The war with Lester started well before the fight and ended well after. People will remember Michael sweated down a few divisions to get a crack at Lester's title and won the war of words to the point he probably distracted Lester enough to get under his guard. Great fight and made all the more interesting because Michael was Lester's hero growing up. The experience of Michael and his hard head probably made all the difference in the end.

Lester also had weight and discipline issues. I once read where he couldn't sleep the night before the first John Sichula fight (commonwealth titlefight) so he got up and ate a bunch of chocolate biscuits. Unsurprisingly the next day at the weigh in he was overweight(p s Sichula won that fight yet didn't receive the decision)

Lester could and should have won the fight....Barry simply outsmarted him well before the fight even started

Hi i am looking for information about a boxer named Jimmy O'Dea, a boxer in the 1930's from NSW. He is my great grandfather and we only know his boxing name and was hoping there was information about where he really came from and his really name. He died in 1942 in Singapore during the second world war.
this is the fight information that i found on Boxrec.com but i couldnt contact them. I would appreciate any information as we would love to track down our family. His family would have never known we exist and my grandfather was his only child.

Jimmy O'Dea
Global ID 197102
sex male
division featherweight
country Australia
residence Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
won 15 (KO 8) + lost 15 (KO 5) + drawn 7 = 37 rounds boxed 143 KO% 21.62

Lester needed to be very carefully guided going into the Barry Michael bout. Not sure if he was or not. But he should have been under specific instructions not to get involved in any verbals with Michael because it was always going to play a part in his undoing.

By fight night Lester was that angry and frustrated he just wanted to kill Michael and I'm sure that was part of the reason the fight ended up being fought on Michael's terms. Not Lester's.
