Anderson was wearing a Hatton promptions gown on the main pic and then the article then proceed to state he wasn't with them which was rather contradictory also he came across as a grumpy git but good article though.
The inquest feature worked well again, it had the perfect subject in Pac-Marquez 3.
The last one I enjoyed that much was Haye-Wlad.
The P.E.D's article was very informative, I never realised RJJ VS Richard Hall they were both on Steroids and Toney vs Batchelder they were both on Steroids. With that sort of pattern the sport must be rife with cheats like them.
Andre 'The Dirty Rat' Dirrell article was telling "I.m looking forward to fighting Ward down the line in my career, that's the moneymaker!" between the lines (I was scared of losing this massive fight so feigned serious signs of early pugilistic dementia to get out of it. but i'm ok now!)

Agreed on PEDs.....shame looking back at careers of the likes of RJJ and Shane with a black cloud over them - and if I recall correctly Hall was 10x over?

I've really enjoyed the issue this month especially the drugs bit. I've started to take a real interest in that side of things over the last couple of years. On the question of subscribing, i've never had any issues at all. It's always on time and in good condition.
On another note, when my Mrs ordered it for a christmas present (2 years ago and she's still paying!!) she commented that the lady she ordered through was very nice.

Kenny did mention that he wasn’t too happy with the logo on his gown but it was his most fetching one so he kept it on & said to hell with it. Cheers, I found him to have a dry wit and hoped it came across in his ‘I moved street’ line. I’d recommend saying “Hello” to Kenny is you see him at a show, he’s very approachable but don’t make the mistake I made and call him Ken, he doesn’t like that and isn’t afraid to say so

Thanks for filling me in, he seemed like a tough dude who didn't waste words. 'I moved street'? when his neighbour gets shot so he moves..but just around the corner lol crazy man I wont call him Ken!

Yeah you're right 10 Times over!! I found it a bit of an eye-opener Naive of me I know..
I just think a steroid cheat in boxing is as bad as a plaster insert in yer glove. Get the testers out there surprise visits to gym's, ringside etc let's see who the real deals are.

I thought so in the end, ta for that. Nice to have enough British fighters and fights to devote a calendar to these days - with a whole bunch who could justifiably have been in there left out.

Plenty to choose from is a good sign. 8)
The Khan -Peterson fight would be a good inquest feature, or we may have another controversial one in Froch-Ward!

Maybe the two together? Long way ahead though, see what happens. If we were out next week it'd be a must but I worry when things are that 'old', Ring phobia pmsl

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but got my BM this morning; when I were a lad I loved the two-page world results round-up with the pithy, one-sentence reviews that you did back in the early '90s.
To see it reinstated in a more in-depth, wide-ranging format is, in my opinion, fifty times better & more useful & entertaining than the inquest feature (ducks, hides behind sofa). I love mad tiny Asian/Mexican boxing, but simply cannot keep up with who's really good & who's worth following unless I had some kind of cyber-implant fixed to my spine, constantly monitoring badly-written copy from fifty different amateur websites, running twenty-four/seven.
To have the important world-level results, a brief recap of what went down & also interesting fights I might like to download featuring contenders, up & comers, prospects, popular fighters & oddities presented in BM like that means I am a Very Happy Boy Indeed.
As I said, the Interweb provides access to an overwhelming load of info, & it's nice to have a discerning editorial that selects the results that really matter/that they feel are worth following, so I can, if I wish, find the fights at my leisure to watch.
I've got a feeling I might be in the minority with this, but I really really fvcking
love this feature, Glyn. Thanks mate.
PS: If you promise to keep it up, I'll subscribe for five years, in one go. Honest. It means that much to me, & improves the value-for-money of the magazine ten-fold.

Get off the fence sir! Say what you mean!
Seriously, looking for response to the feature and pleased you have kicked it off with such a positive post. Thanks mate. The exact intention was a beefed up version of the old results pages. As you may know, I've struggled with the concept of fight reporting for some time — the internet is spreading, Twitter is rampant, BM was being left far behind. But fights are the end product of all the interviews, features and previews we do so to ignore them would be ridiculous. The 'halfway house' approach to the World In Action feature hopefully will prove more enjoyable to readers, the reports will be shorter but more fights will be covered than before. For big fights we can go to the Inquest feature approach which seems popular. December's Khan and Froch fights were prime suspects but so old news by the time we came out again at the end of January that I decided against it.

I understand why you didn't run with feature reports on Khan & Froch but personally I missed them; I might be in a minority but I always enjoy BM's take on such fights regardless of whether it's 3 weeks to a month later. The blow was slightly lessened by my BM towel though :)

Glyn, I've always wanted to know - why did you lose the Reader's Letters section, around 1999/2000? In this era of everyone in the world being able to communicate with each other it seems odd we can't with BM. Wouldn't a reader's emails section work?
Anyway, please don't forget Jeff Merritt and Roy Tiger Williams in 2012!! The hour glass of Merritt's life must be very near the end!

To be honest, it became depressing reading the letters. Some of them were just so dumb it was untrue. At the point we stopped there was a lot of racism going aroundq and it became plain unpleasant. There was always the 'write fake letters' option I suppose, we wouldn't have been the first, but that's pretty pathetic in my opinion. If we'd had the level of communication and interaction that today's web-based fans are capable of then we'd still have a letters section today. Sadly we seemed to attract more cranks than anything else.
Your emails idea is pretty good though. We do get a lot of emails anyway, which I try to respond to, but to formalise it, so to speak, might work. It's not like I discourage contact, personally I really enjoy it. But it'd be right to say I haven't encouraged it - formally, at least, obviously I lurk around here and on Twitter, so there is a good degree of 'unofficial' interaction.

Glyn, I love the magazine, and this edition was a great start to 2012.
But I really feel that you need to update the look - its going to struggle to attract any younger fans when its up against the aesthetically more pleasing BN or Fighters Only etc. Appreciate design isn't cheap and you have a hardcore following that probably love it the way it is but for me its getting dated.
Not as bad looking as the Ring though.

While I like BN I wouldn't want to produce a mag of that genre. But if anyone wants a BN type mag, there it is for them, a bloody good one. Fighting Fit always looks nice, the step by step type features lend themselves to the look. But in all honesty BM is about writing more than anything, that's all I care about these days. If people don't want that, they don't have to buy us. And we certainly aren't outsold by BN or FF.
In my opinion there is no young audience out there waiting to be converted by a boxing magazine, even if such a concept were possible, which it isn't. TV exposure creates a fan base, magazines feed on that. And as you know boxing's TV exposure has become more and more marginalised over the years. The fan base now is 99% the same as five or ten years ago, I'm certain of that. But even if I'm way wrong I'm not pandering to any audience and I'm certainly not going to go chasing mythical ones. And I'm bloody minded enough to stick to my guns. Content is what counts for me. Eff the rest, basically.

Stylistically Boxing News is in NO way more aesthetically pleasing in it's current form. Last years re-design did it no favours whatsoever, big flashy heading's, clumsy page arrangements and 'seemingly' less content. I haven't bought many issues since the format change so things may have improved.
BM's format works just fine and I'd rather subtle changes every now and again that are given time to work (or not) rather than a complete makeover that ends up reading like a completely different publication.

Indeed, I've talked to Glyn about this before and I believe this seems to be the only USP left - good writing. Oh, and having an opinion.
Private Eye isn't doing too badly and their design hasn't changed significantly in decades.
I hate all this whizz-bang Smash Hits multi-platform integrated media bollocks.

Alright Danny, while were on the topic (kind of) who is your target audience for fighting fit? How are sales going? Had an interesting conversation about it today with a couple of young lads i'm training, they felt that it was very difficult to follow and was lacking in relativity to them, and their goals. Who do you want to buy the mag? I think its a belter by the way and rarely miss a copy.
Same for BN and BM... great, great mags that make every shit I have that much more satisfying.

Don't get me wrong, its all about the quality of the writing and the articles - thats why I love it and respect it. OK maybe its not about attracting a younger audience - you're right they aren't suddenly going to be buying BM - but I am sure that some regular readers like me think it could look a little 'fresher' certainly not as tabloidly as BN but fresher just a little tweak of the fonts perhaps.
I completely understand your point, and was just trying to offer some feedback.

There has to be a balance though and a little updating here and there wouldn't hurt.
