I dont know mate i will have to ask him ...i do know one thing though ...my aunt & uncle was stopping up at the races the day the Gormans got hospitalized ...according to my uncle it was so bad women ad children was screaming at what at what happened ...it was very bad to watch .mercman wrote:I wonder if your father knows or remembers Danny Shenton. Shenton was due to fight Barley Gorman at Doncaster races when Gorman was attacked and almost killed by a gang at Doncaster races (although I believe that Shenton was in no way responsible for this). Whilst I don't think Shenton was a gypsy himself he fought a lot of bare knuckle contests with gypsies and travellers back in the 1970s and 1980s and I have heard he was undefeated - how true this is I don't know though. Either way, I do know that Danny Shenton was a real hard case feared by his contemporaries. I am led to believe he is still a fearsome character today, although he must now be in his 60s.mrpedigree wrote:According to my father whose in his 60s ...he knew their father who was murdered ...my dad says wally was the better of the two but both could fight by all accounts , they both where much lighter than Gormans tho !stevieb_8006 wrote:was jimmy stockins much cop?
The fighters me dad goes on about lol are as follows !
Bartley Gorman
Sam Gorman
Boxers Tom
John John Stanley
in fact he often bores me to tears about the past :)
Mr Shenton is still up and around and still lives in the Doncaster area. He looked fit and well the last time I saw him; apparently he had the bench press record at Armley Prison. At one time he was reputed to be one of the very toughest men in Doncaster.mercman wrote:I wonder if your father knows or remembers Danny Shenton. Everyone knows Simon Fox is Doncaster's hardest man (to persuade to open his wallet).simon fox wrote:I know that Mr Shentons' reputation was country wide (he was to fight Sam Goreman, not Bartley) but the title of Doncasters toughest wasn't his undisputed; Wagger, Arthur Forbes and Neil Malpass are the same generation and they've never had sand kicked in their faces, the late Darren Lazari would also go straight through a room of hard lads, he weren't shy in a fight.
Aidy Jones?mercman wrote:I don't know the others but surely Danny Shenton is a fair bit older than Malpass. The name Lazari rings a bell though. You say the 'late' Darren Lazari - how did he die? Or is it something that can't be discussed?simon fox wrote:I know that Mr Shentons' reputation was country wide (he was to fight Sam Goreman, not Bartley) but the title of Doncasters toughest wasn't his undisputed; Wagger, Arthur Forbes and Neil Malpass are the same generation and they've never had sand kicked in their faces, the late Darren Lazari would also go straight through a room of hard lads, he weren't shy in a fight.

I think both Wagger and Neil would acknowledge Danny Shenton as the number one, very few in the country would have got the better of Danny in his prime. Mal Tetley was another hard man from Donny... Pat Bruce, Martin Kamara, all of these were very formidable lads .... as for Arthur Forbes, reputations meant nothing to him, he'd have a go at anyone and do severe damage.simon fox wrote:I know that Mr Shentons' reputation was country wide (he was to fight Sam Goreman, not Bartley) but the title of Doncasters toughest wasn't his undisputed; Wagger, Arthur Forbes and Neil Malpass are the same generation and they've never had sand kicked in their faces, the late Darren Lazari would also go straight through a room of hard lads, he weren't shy in a fight.
