Manchester Crown Court

Man jailed for gouging man's eye out

A man who gouged another man's eye out over a disagreement more than 10 years earlier has been jailed.

John Fury (born 22/05/1965) of Moss Lane, Styal, admitted section 18 assault at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, at an earlier hearing.

He was today, Thursday 10 February 2011, sentenced to 11 years in prison.

On 14 July 2010, the victim, 43 at the time, was at British Car Auctions Belle Vue when he was approached by Fury.

The pair had fallen out during a holiday together approximately 12 years ago that resulted in them brawling.

Fury challenged the victim to a fight before telling him: "I'm the best man here, the best fighting man here today and the best fighter in the country."

Fury then began to attack the man before he put him in a headlock and gouged his eye.

The victim lost his right eye as a result of the assault.

Detective Constable Andrew Langlands, of Longsight CID, said: "This was an appallingly sickening attack that left the victim with serious and lasting injuries.

"This assault seemingly stemmed from a disagreement that is more than 10 years old and it is a reflection of Fury's character that he has been willing to carry out such a violent act over something that should have been long forgotten.

"I hope this result sends out a message to anyone who is a victim of this sort of violent crime - no matter who they are or their background - that we will support you every step of the way and that police officers will do everything they can to bring your attacker to justice."

What I'm really interested in is a "King of The Gadjés" match.

Possibly wearing pillows strapped to each fist, on a village bowling green somewhere. First one to make feathers come out of their pillow by the violence of their assault wins, ooh, I dunno, a year's sub to the Guardian or summink.

Though I am also awaiting with bated breath "My Big Fat Gadjé Wedding" in which a TV show takes a prurient, stupid & exploitative look into the mystical, completely Other world of Pamela, India & Siobhan, three scions of the ruling class from a leafy Surrey suburb as they take their first tottering steps out into the bizarre social world of the Gadjé, filled with odd customs & quaint rituals. Thrill! as they visit an Audi dealership! Gawp! as Daddy decides whether to spend sixty or seventy grand on the reception! Make appreciative "Woo-hooo" noises as Mumsy gets in a tizz over the flower-arranging & starts adding a few cheeky valium to her early-afternoon straightener!

A mush can dream, no?

According to my father whose in his 60s ...he knew their father who was murdered ...my dad says wally was the better of the two but both could fight by all accounts , they both where much lighter than Gormans tho !
The fighters me dad goes on about lol are as follows !
Bartley Gorman
Sam Gorman
Boxers Tom
John John Stanley
in fact he often bores me to tears about the past :)
I wonder if your father knows or remembers Danny Shenton. Shenton was due to fight Barley Gorman at Doncaster races when Gorman was attacked and almost killed by a gang at Doncaster races (although I believe that Shenton was in no way responsible for this). Whilst I don't think Shenton was a gypsy himself he fought a lot of bare knuckle contests with gypsies and travellers back in the 1970s and 1980s and I have heard he was undefeated - how true this is I don't know though. Either way, I do know that Danny Shenton was a real hard case feared by his contemporaries. I am led to believe he is still a fearsome character today, although he must now be in his 60s.
I dont know mate i will have to ask him ...i do know one thing though ...my aunt & uncle was stopping up at the races the day the Gormans got hospitalized ...according to my uncle it was so bad women ad children was screaming at what at what happened ...it was very bad to watch .

Mr Shenton is still up and around and still lives in the Doncaster area. He looked fit and well the last time I saw him; apparently he had the bench press record at Armley Prison. At one time he was reputed to be one of the very toughest men in Doncaster.

I know that Mr Shentons' reputation was country wide (he was to fight Sam Goreman, not Bartley) but the title of Doncasters toughest wasn't his undisputed; Wagger, Arthur Forbes and Neil Malpass are the same generation and they've never had sand kicked in their faces, the late Darren Lazari would also go straight through a room of hard lads, he weren't shy in a fight.

I don't know the others but surely Danny Shenton is a fair bit older than Malpass. The name Lazari rings a bell though. You say the 'late' Darren Lazari - how did he die? Or is it something that can't be discussed?
Aidy Jones?

Race week in Doncaster is still pretty interesting. A lot of the locals still avoid town afterwards.

I think both Wagger and Neil would acknowledge Danny Shenton as the number one, very few in the country would have got the better of Danny in his prime. Mal Tetley was another hard man from Donny... Pat Bruce, Martin Kamara, all of these were very formidable lads .... as for Arthur Forbes, reputations meant nothing to him, he'd have a go at anyone and do severe damage.

The book (King Of The Gypsies) said Danny was to have fought Sam Goreman but Danny was due to have fought Bartley that day on the racecourse. There was a huge wager on Danny to beat Bartley.... the Donny travellers knew exactly what Danny was capable of. It was the Donny travellers who set up the fight and it was they who backed Danny to the tune of hundreds of pounds. Whether Danny would have beat him, we will never know, but what was seemingly clear is that Bartley sensed a hostile atmosphere that day and wanted out. I'm not saying Bartley backed down against Danny, I doubt very much Bartley would have backed down against anyone, but when vastly outnumbered and faced with dozens of psyched up travellers... he obviously feared for the safety of himself and those with him. Danny was long gone before it turned nasty. The Donny travellers wanted paying out believing Bartley forfeited the fight.... Bartley refused to pay them and that is why they attacked him.
