"I am not proud of going to jail but it helped me recognise what I want and how to go and get it - legally."

So no lessons learned at all then, really?

Larry O was on steroids - no shit sherlock? Is anyon really shocked.

Why is Wales owed an apology? Stated the obvious, so obvious that nothing needed to be said, wasn't Larry a national class sprinter in a sport (the 100 meters) where steroid taking is rife, he is hardly going to come off the juice to become a heavyweight boxer!

Not that it did him all that much good anyway. He was a domestic battler who got decisively beaten more than once against fighters who weren't on the juice. If had won titles and whatnot then punish him. Besides, if he has any sense he would go to America and fight anyway. Wherever he goes, he is going to be that bit more marketable than the average heavyweight thats for sure - and thats' why he took them in the first place.

They should use some of that lottery funding to create a national drug testing board

I've never really understood the reasons behind why the testing regime is so flawed.

Presumably, the testing is cheap to perform and quick to get a result? Is it as simple as a dipstick (specific for a given PED) in a jar of piss, and checking for a colour change? Am I missing something?

There are new things now, which can test if your testosterone is synthetic or if it has been created by your body. That's how Peterson got done. Don't know if these tests have found their way to the UK yet, though.

Sports nutrition has improved dramatically in the last 15 years or so. Metrx was really the first scientific bona fide protein drink to hit the market. I remember being 15 years old and reading of this drink in one of my fathers martial arts magazines back in 1994 . The old Weider shop in Charing Cross station was the first place to start selling this drink a year later, and the drink hit the sports supplement market like a tornado wave. Previously u had garbage like weiders egg and milk drink powders endorsed by guys up to their eye balls in steroids yet claiming their weider mega mass 3000 calorie shake did it all for them.

Yet if you look back at athletes in the 70s and 80 they undoubtedly had more muscular, thicker, more defined physques than atheletes today by and large. The answer is these guys were on steroids.

It was only when i hit 29 after a lifetime of hard natural work to stay stronger and faster than most guys , that i began to dabble in steroids , HGH and fat burners and the like, as over time it became apparent to me that the dangers of using these things were far far exaggerated and that 80% of the people I had trained with over the years had been on something. I felt cheated and felt I should cheat also.

Would the use of such things help a boxer. Well undoubtedly fat burners would. and the caffeine and other herbs in these things would also energise a boxer just before a fight and during training. So yes it would help him perform better if not teach him to throw a faster jab , have better defence etc.

HGH is also something that would greatly aid a boxers training. Over time it can actually repair the cartilage in for example a boxers knee, cartilage of course is worn down over time. It also burns abdominal trunk fat as it is injected subcutaneously into the stomach. It promotes deep sleep and all of these things would greatly aid a boxers recovery and ability to train harder.

Specific steroids do add strength and power to a boxers punches. It was only recently I also saw the incredible benefit of certain steroids to promote increased stamina and work rate.

So yes all things considered, PEDS do greatly greatly help a boxer be a better boxer. Variously different steroids can to some extent increase speed in punches through increasing red blood cells and promoting certain white twitch and red twitch fibres in muscle.

Punch technique contributes more than anything else to greater power and speed but for sure PEDS through honing the vessell that delivers them also adds something, that is perhaps the best way I can put it.

I do look at a few of the guys fighting today and even back in the 90s and I suspect they were on the juice. In particular one light middleweight who went up to Super middle and won titles he looked huge at 168 and the way he went up was very sudden. Same thing with a former lightweight champ who went up to 154 even 168 and did very well. I think both used steroids, but I have no proof, but these guys bulked up as an accesory to their natural skills and talent and boy they were two of the most talented at their peak. The speed and skill and fighting brain of both these men was exceptional.

But I digress, my point is I think it does go on in boxing but probably a lot less than many sports.

JuiceMachine should be killed in public.....hmmm...er no he shouldnt, nor should some of the drama queens in this thread be allowed to write silly quotes like "he could have killed someone"

I say we should have juicing fights where the combatants all know they are juicing and sign a waver, hell I would love to watch two big steriod freaks in a fight.

I dont care anymore as I think they...(edited by mod) are ALL taking banned gear..

And you know what? I dont mind as i dont care anymore.

I never asked for an apology - so what your saying is its fine for larry to take steroids and fight guys who dont? It was so obvious nothing needed to be said - that almost sounds like you condone it? It was 3/4 years ago I pointed it out. Wouldve been a very sad and different story had Larry hurt someone in the ring.

Interesting, throwing another conspirecy theory out there. Didnt Freddy Roach say Larry should stay in the wildcard gym because he had potential to be a huge draw in america....

Larry has screwed himself big time.

Having said that, I would say that in most performance sports these days the majority of athletes are using something other than beetroot juice to give them an edge.

I've always said I'd love a 'Mutant' Olympics where all competitors can take whatever the jeff they like and then we can see how fast and hard the human body can go. But as far as boxing in general goes, no.

I'd like to think all those stars of our sport are not juicing, a couple maybe, but not all the top fighters surely?

Shut up mate, Larry was a body builder long before a boxer, don't comment about what you don't know to much about.
I'm not talking about his skill as a builder....but as a boxer

And who are you to say what I do and don't know? What are your credentials ? Not that it has any bearing on my experienced opinion
I know for a fact you don't know Larry, and I know your comments about returning all his purses where spoken from the hole in your arse.
So what exactly is your experienced opinion on the matter ?

Larry had an absolutley fantastic muscle packed physique. It seems crazy now that he wasn't rumbled by more than a couple of people. The evidence was clear; in his (partial) defence; I can imagine that after the hard work involved in building his physique he'd be loathed for it to deteriorate; he shouldn't have used, it was unfair to his opponent and to the sport. On another angle; surely others in his camp, maybe his trainer/manager etc etc would have known something about it + how on earth a muscle bound and obviously drug enhanced competitor has not been screened shows at least a complacent/amateur and disingenous attitude to screening and maybe more.

Taken from an interview with Emanuel Steward after the Chavez-Lee fight.
In the aftermath of the fight Emanuel Steward has expressed he is very concerned about whether the fight was a level playing field for both fighters to compete in. Chavez Jr. neglected to give a mandatory urine sample when he successfully defended his title against Marco Antonio Rubio in Texas in February this year.

Team Lee have now requested confirmation and clarity from Dick Cole, the Texas State Athletic Commissioner on whether Chavez Jr. carried out an anti-doping drug test on Saturday evening and what the results are. Furthermore Emanuel Steward has a meeting with Senator John McCain, instigator of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act on July 10 and one of the items on the agenda is enhanced performance drugs being used in professional boxing.

Emanuel Steward commented ‘Andy Lee is like a son to me, I always look after all my fighters’ health and wellbeing. I am very concerned about enhanced performance drugs being used by boxers. This is not tennis or golf; boxing is a physical combat sport where if drugs are used by one fighter then this is a disadvantage against the other fighter and causes serious damage to a fighter’s health. Are we going to wait for someone to be killed in the ring before this matter is taken seriously and dealt with?”

“I am taking this matter about the fight on Saturday evening very seriously and I am waiting on the Texas Commission to clarify the situation before considering any appropraite action. I am not putting Andy Lee or any of my fighters’ lives at risk in life and death fights and then everyone pretends this is the honourable noble art of the sport of boxing. Good people in boxing need to stand up and speak out for what is right and stop these fighters, promoters and commissions doing whatever they like because they have money, power and muscle.”

Drugs and bad judging is killing the sport of boxing in the United States. The fans are turned off; they love the sport but not the business of boxing. What type of role models and heroes are professional boxers and world champions using drugs providing to young kids in the gym starting their amateur careers? Parents and Youth and Community workers are trying to steer their kids away from drugs.

by the time haye was done at cruiser, he was massively draining himself anyway and probably weighed about 215 in the ring for those last few fights anyway! its not suprising that he could put on maybe half a stone to a stone of mass by eating properly and not having to dry himself out

Haye is clean.....end of. its dangerous, defamatory and libellous to suggest otherwise. plus i believe that he is a good clean living hard working professional athlete!

im not sure these pictures of pacman are that condemning to be honest. Not saying he or anyone is clean these days. But clearly as a kid he is a skinny ripped dude. Not sure it would take too much out of the ordinary boxers regime and a good diet to look how he does in the second pic!

Man On 13 Different Steroids Not Rumbled By Drug Testing

No-one on here believes the sport is anymore than 70/30 clean, but wowsers I'm just agog that Larry got away with it for so long.

He'd get a lot more respect if he detailed how the hell he got away with it, that's for sure.
