Santa Cruz is a rough matchup for Mares. Abner is quicker but their styles mesh to favor the taller and broader SC who seems sturdier with heavier handsSouthpawStephen wrote:He called Santa Cruz a step back. Not sure he would win that war.

Looks like the only way to beat Mares is to separate him from his senses. Even then, I can imagine a scenario where Donaire puts Mares down and out, and they end up disqualifying Donaire for "hitting too hard" and "unnecessary roughness".

I just want to see one Mares fight where the ref doesn't allow him to land dozens of low blows and deducts points when he continues to land low blows after being warned for it. Is that asking so much? Sometimes this sport sucks really really bad.

SC will hit him back low, you can bet that, they teach an eye for an eye in his gym. SC has Al Haymon's backing as well for the conspiracy theorists so officiating would be expected to favor him in that argumentSouthpawStephen wrote:He's a little Margarito in there. Non stop brute. between Mares and Ward, the Californians are giving the Texans a run for their money when it comes to curious circumstances in fights.
I had Mares winning 115-112 (6-4-2) with the KD and penalty added in, without deduction I would have had it 115-113

Mares got shook pretty good in the 11th.SouthpawStephen wrote:I must have to watch the fight again. mares was the one pressuring, landing more, and visibly shaking Moreno throughout the fight. I was completely sober, as I am for all fights. I don't drink.:)

Re: Mares/Moreno and undercard RBR.
I had it 118-108 Mares, even though I'm kind of rooting against him hoping he gets his just desserts for the first Agbeko fight (which I thought he lost close even before all the Russell Mora crap comes into play). I agree with Brian Kenny's assessment for the most part in this instance, although I disagree on one of the specific rounds he gave Moreno. I think the ringside crew were too busy talking about the fight to keep good track of the winners of the rounds- something that's extremely common in boxing broadcasters. I think they noticed every time Moreno had a decent moment and gave Mares less credit than he deserved for dominating the rest of the round.
I gave Moreno round 8 and would have given him 11 if not for the BS deduction, though I thought in both cases they were toss-ups. Other than that, I thought 12 was close enough to give him. But that's it. I can't truly fathom a score closer than 117-109. I mean there were some pretty close rounds mixed in....1, 3, 7, and 9 all fit that description for me, but I don't think Mares was outdone in clean effective punches in any of them, and his effective aggressiveness was off the charts. For that reason, I don't think they are really particularly arguable. I think James Jen Kin just really likes aggression, and I have no problem with his shutout scorecard. I actually have more problem with the two 116-110 cards, since I think they definitely missed at least one round, while I can't say the same for Jen Kin.
For those of you that had it close or (if there are any such people out there) had it for Moreno- I just don't get it. You would almost have to not count body punching and not count effective aggressiveness at all to even come close to an even score, I would think.

I gave 1, 3, 7 and 9 to Moreno; had 11 even.

Round 10? I didn't even think that one was remotely close.DetroitHxC wrote:I gave Moreno 1, 3, 7, 9, 10, 11 (though it came out even with the point deduction), and 12.
Mares was either missing a lot, or not doing anything for the last four rounds, and Moreno was landing a lot of jabs, mixed with some solid combinations.
