Re: Any bench pressers here?
Been forever since I've updated. Finally back to training after the layoff.
Benched 385 (175 kg) the other day and it felt pretty good. Had a little gas left in the tank both with the shoulder and the overall body.
I'll probably only bench once a week through mid-October, but I'll make them heavy sessions. My next comp is not until March, so I've got lots of time. The goal is 415+ at the meet.

Re: Any bench pressers here?
I read that the former Football Player and shot putter leif larsen who turned boxer has like the second or third best value in the history of NFL in the 100K bench press with 45 Reps.
last year the winner of the NFL Combine did 37 reps.
I'm surprised that some guys here state that they have hit 40 reps especially with PBs of less than 180 K. did you really use strict touch and go form?
but the example of larsen Shows that big bench pressing does not make you a good boxer. larsen had some Punch as he won 14 out of his 17 wins before time but he certainly wasn't an elite Puncher despite being probably the strongest bench presser in heavyweight history.

Re: Any bench pressers here?
The bench press isn't a "necessary" exercise for football. There has been some push in the past to replace it at the NFL combine with something more sports specific like power cleans or hang cleans. Specificity of training is very important here, and training reps is important when shooting for reps.dominik wrote:I read that the former Football Player and shot putter leif larsen who turned boxer has like the second or third best value in the history of NFL in the 100K bench press with 45 Reps.

You will find smaller powerlifters (some well under 100 kg) who can bench 225 for 50-60 reps. Powerlifters of comparable size to the NFL's best bench pressers are benching 315 (142 kg) for 30, 40, 50 reps. I believe Scot Mendelson benched 315 for 64 reps once.
So basically football players are strong, but bench isn't an exercise they do for sport performance so it's not as developed as other lifts. There are gym rats who devote their lives to certain lifts who can outlift some of the best NFL players in the world. Heck, I can outbench (for example) Clay Matthews...but then he's a multi millionaire who could outperform me in every other test they give pro football players (except maybe squats and deadlifts) so who has the last laugh
And yes, being good at one lift or athletic movement does not make you a good boxer. I don't think anyone ever claimed it did.

Re: Any bench pressers here?
Wasn't able to get a vid today, but set a personal best benching 315 (~143 kg) for 21 reps. That's one rep more than my previous best. Aside from this lingering labrum tear bench has been going really well. Everything seems to be falling into place, if I could just get rid of the pain
If anyone has any legal remedies for pain management I'd appreciate it. I handle it really well but it gets pretty unnerving to feel shoulder pain with 200 kg over your face![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)

Re: Any bench pressers here?
thanks, did not know that. also your PR Plays a big role. Mendelson is probably not even all that good in going for reps but if your PR is like 900 lbs doing 300 for reps is like doing reps with 100 for an average athlete.punchoutsb wrote:The bench press isn't a "necessary" exercise for football. Re: Any bench pressers here?
Definitely PR plays a big role and up until recently massive benchers weren't known for their rep strength. Mendelson was actually a good rep bencher and Eric Spoto has brought about an American bench revolution by being primarily a rep bencher who happened to crush the raw world record. Eastern Europeans have been rep benching for a long time but never quite reached US success. I like reps because I think you've only got so many massive lifts in your shoulders; it's best to save them for meets and hit reps in training. Spoto also preaches never touching the chest in training, and dealing with a torn labrum I definitely see the wisdom in that now as long as you build up your front delts separately to get the weight off the chest when you really need to touch.dominik wrote: thanks, did not know that. also your PR Plays a big role. Very good Mugabi. My training buddy is similar in strength to you but he's 90kgs. He's well know here in Glasgow for being very strong p4p. Im guessing your PB bench is around 160kg?

Re: Any bench pressers here?
Been away from boxrec for a while as schools kept me busy. I'm less than 50 from the State Championships now. I've heard from two guys that I inspired to start that they will both be competing in my division. That's a really awesome development, but the competitor inside me knows I HAVE to beat them both
I'm sitting about 185 kg bench at the moment, but still lots of time to add to it. I've begun recently adding reverse band presses to the mix, and I LOVE them. Never really done them before. Hit 245 kg for a single. Top two or three inches were all me, and it felt great locking out that kind of weight. I've got about 4.5 kg to lose still bodyweight wise, so I'm hoping that I will be able to build strength rather than lose it as I drop the remaining weight. My minimum goal is 181.5 kg. Anything less than that will be a big disappoint to me, though I only need about 167 kg to break the state record.

Re: Any bench pressers here?
About a week ago I found a last second meet in my area for the APF state title. Never competed in this fed before but I gave the guy a call to see if I could still get in. He agreed despite me missing all the deadlines by a long shot. It turns out he'd heard of me from my previous three state championships with USAPL/IPF, so that made me feel pretty good! Anyway I'm heading out today to weigh in and the comp is tomorrow. Lets hope the shoulder holds up and wish me luck on getting title number 4!

Title number four won!
Hit 182.5 kg for my heaviest, and I'm happy with it considering my shoulder issues. I'd love to be up around 200 kg again by end of summer or fall.

Re: Any bench pressers here?
This is important if you're a boxer.. Bench press with dumbbells instead of barbells... You do them narrow and turn your wrists a quarter turn on the press.. Dumbbells isolate your triceps better.. They don't build your chest out.. They don't injure your shoulders.. You don't have locked wrists---so you can turn your wrists naturally a quarter turn and fire more muscle fibers.
Also it's important not to rep to failure... If you're grunting out reps with 500 pounds you raise your blood pressure immensely on the last rep.. Over 10 years of so this can start to balloon your heart valves a little, and you might have a little backflow.. Therefore when you start to lose speed and form STOP the set.. You know when you can easily do another repetition.. You're building a denser, stronger muscle.. You're triceps comes back faster because you're not breaking it down by overworking it.
Same with pushups.. If you can do 97 don't try to do 100.. Stop when you lose speed and form.. Don't make it difficult.. Breakup your workouts to fool your body.. alternate regular pushups with plyometric pushups.. Don't clap your hands.. Just see how far you can throw yourself off the floor.. You need a workout buddy for this -- somebody you can compete with.

That's really smart man. My reservations about the bench press are they don't build the chest, triceps and delts as equally as push upsKalan wrote:This is important if you're a boxer.. Re: Any bench pressers here?
With pushups you DON'T want to come all the way down and touch your chest obviously.. 4 or 5 inches is close enough.. But you want a full extension of the arm on the push.. A lot of guys cheat a little on the push so they can do a bigger number faster.. Form is more important than the number you do.. And stopping as soon as you lose speed and form is also important.. How many you do is not as important as form.. It's how many prefect ones you can do in 5 or 6 years.
What I don't like about benching with barbells is guys are taking wide grips, touching their chests with the bar, grunting out reps, building out their chests, and getting shoulder injuries. Also doing flies which they think helps hooking power but they don't. Adjustable pullies work for hooks and uppercuts.

191 kgs yesterday, first time going heavy in a good while. Competition is September, with a great chance at a State record and an outside chance at a National record.

New microcycle started.
8 weeks, first four focusing on upping volume from 6x2 to 6x6 at 150 kg.
Second four working up to a single of (hopefully) 200 kg.
Bench twice per week throughout the entire program. Hit 6x2 150 easy as you please on Monday. Tomorrow I'll go 6x3.

Ive been trying to get my buddy to follow your training plans with regards bench but he's so set in his ways I've left him to it and started training with some other guys the other week. He had gotten to 180kg at 87kg body weight so didn't feel the need to change it up. It was killing my joints trying to stick with him.

What did you hit? How much were you? I was a terrible presser in high school. Today I hit 150 for 6x4 and it felt easy. I want to jump ahead of myself but I need to keep myself under wraps to protect my shoulder. Its all feeling GREAT right now.

I was in 11th grade at GVHS. Hmm..record..At least 200 I'm not sure if I did 205. I was about 139 lbs back then but that may not be precise. Small school. Small Maine town. I wrote to the AAU to get the State record & when the info came in...I knew I could forget that! It was really steep!punchoutsb wrote:What did you hit? How much were you? When I started lifting weights we had a couple of pro's teaching us. Donny Arnt AND Ray Depistino (Sp?). We were basically body building. Chest. We did other exercises too but the bench press was what we competed with. Every week we would max out. Shocking how quickly you can go up.
It was only for one summer but it helped me a LOT!
You probably know that body building is reps. We would work out Mon. Wed. Fri. and the off days were very important too, for the rest.
We had it well rounded..even leg exercises. And clean and jerk. But..the bench press is THE exercise that will SHOW you pretty quick.
We measured our bodies as we'd go and everything. Me, Tim Roys, Bob Hermance and our two guides.
We lived in a children's home. Ray had grown up there too.
Pounds!
