Can't understand how anyone could score that for Gethin. I had it quite close in the end simply because Matthews started to tire but I had Derry winning by four rounds.
As for Stewpot...well, maybe he was spooked by Gripper or something.

judge: Phil Edwards 116-112 | judge: Michael Alexander 117-113 | judge: Dave Parris 114-115

Boxrec is showing that, but who knows.

Gethin genuinely thought he'd won. I thought Derry won handily.

I backed him to win by stoppage I just can't seem to win any money on him! Either backing against him or wrong result. Good win for him he'll have a tough defence vs Flannigan very tough to call.

Matthews turned in a very competent display. Refused to get drawn into Gethin's type of fight and IMO romped home on the scorecards. Parris should not be allowed to judge anymore...how many times does he do this?

Think some people need to watch the fight on mute and not listen to allegedly biased commentary, I had the fight a draw but maybe being a bit kind to Gethin as champion even so 1/2 rounds in it max.

I like Steve Bell but he was way of the mark Saturday night in my opinion.

Can't knock the result mind as I said if anyone deserved the W it was Mathews.

Agree the commentators can definitely cloud the judgement when you are casually watching a fight.

Steve Bell was atrocious throughout on Saturday and clearly was biased towards Derry which is not what you want from a commentator.

Rawling was trying to give Gethin some rounds but eventually seemed to give in to Bell's one-sided take on things.

I thought 8-4 Mathews was fair but maybe that would be different if I reqatched it on mute.

Mathews was the better man throughout the fight, he was the clear winner.

Barry Jones is a huge fanboy when commentating, as is Richie Woodhall. Bell fitted in very nicely, as it seems to be a pre-requisite for working the TV

Spot on that

Maybe its because Rawling is a tv man he seems to constantly seek assurance from the boxing persona hes working with. Just wish sometimes he'd stick to his own guns.

Not suggesting Gethin won the fight by the way, re watched it and scored it 2 round to Derry.

Gethin wants the rematch (after Flanagan although from his tweets I don't think Derry wants that fight) I hope he gets it.

There should be no rematch.

Gethin needs to earn another shot at the title. Gethin vs Murray would make sense.

Why not aren't rematches usually granted when a champion loses his title especially in a very close fight

1. It wasnt that close
2. Flannagan fight was already agreed for the winner
3. There are a multitude of worthy challengers at lightweight and Gethin has fortuitously held the British title for the past year without having to face one of them the first time he did he lost.

Just for the record Gethin is calling for the rematch AFTER the Flannagan fight which understands is already signed. think its a shame Derry seems likely to try and swerve that fight, I'm sure both boxers agreed to having to fight Flannagan on that date if they won.

And as I said in my opinion not saying Mathews didn't deserve the decision but it was a very close fight. If Gethin had have been the home fighter in his home town I'm sure it may have been different. Suppose those are just not the breaks you get if your not from a fasionable place like Liverpool.

Not enough in it for a rematch, not an interesting enough fight either, it had few moments of real spark or anything to get me rushing out to watch it again. Gethin is just average, an English level fighter who got an easy route to the British title and took his chance. He does everything 5/10 but has no real strong point such as a bit of power or great skills.
