Kid Gavilan vs Carmen Basilio

Ive seen Basilio maybe about 10 times but that was 1st time i'd seen Gavilan after reading a fair bit about him over the years,very nice boxer,i dont think ive ever seen a fighter throw as many bolo's in 1 fight as he did in this one

I just saw Gene Fullmer vs Carmen Basilio fight #2 on YouTube. The fight was a rugged affair, not like the first fight, but still rugged. They were more cautious in this fight than the first meeting. I can't believe that this fight was on a Wednesday afternoon in Salt Lake City, Utah. I wonder why it was not night fight. Maybe, the laws in UT are way different than the rest of the U.S.

Fullmer was much stronger. He was winning comfortably in my view and also in the judges scorecards. It was 108-104 in my card before the stoppage. I think that it was a premature stoppage by the referee. Basilio was not hurt at all and he wildly protested. He wanted to kill the ref. He even shoved the referee.

In round 8, I believe, Basilio went down from a wicked shot to the chin which he rolled backwards a la Akio Kameda vs Aaron Pryor knockdown. But, the referee didn't called it a knockdown.

Watched both fights a few months ago,i thought Fullmer was unlucky not to be credited with the KD too,i thought both fights were stopped prematurely from what i remember

Just watched Joe Frazier vs Buster Mathis . What a great fight and event. Lots of historical significance in this match.This was the first card at the New Madison Square Garden ; both guys were undefeated ( a first for heavyweight championship I think ). Mathis had defeated Joe twice in the amateurs. I'm watching a beautiful copy in Vintage colour with that classic Madison Square Garden tone. You have Arthur Mercante as referee, Dunphy as commentator. Frazier is out weighed by almost 42 pounds. ; 204.5 lbs to 243.5 lbs. Mathis had body fat but he was definitely in condition ; a sharp , decent puncher with great movement. The size of a modern Heavyweight without the 'modern day assistance'. He gave some decent arguments early on and landed some corkers! Frazier's reaction was to smile and taunt. After getting his nose busted, Mathis started to get bullied and battered. Classic Smokin' Joe - a real beatdown! Mathis earned every bit of his $75,000 to Frazier's $175,000.

Floyd Patterson vs Ingemar Johansson 1,2+3

All mental fights,its a wonder this trilogy doesnt get the same attention as the other great rivalries,this match was about 2 punches,Patterson's left hook and Johansson's right hand

Patterson down 7 times in a round in the 1st fight,its unimaginable for a fighter to be down 7 times in a whole fight these days,crazy then seeing Johansson's foot twitching after getting KO'd in the rematch always amazes me

i never knew until watching the 3rd fight that it was the 1st HW title fight with the mandatory 8 count in effect,great fight too that especially the 1st round

Archie Moore vs Yvon Durelle 1+2


Both superb wars,obviously the 1st fight gets most cred with the 7 KD's or so between them and the monumental comeback from Moore,i still know how he got up from those KD's in the 1st,he was still flat on his back by about 7 and still got up but i just watched the rematch and although that only went 3 that was another superb tussle,Durelle showing incredible bravery to keep getting up and swinging

Nope, in the 10th grade and 1500 miles away at the time. The replay was shown on ABC's Wide World of Sports a week or two after the fight.

I was a big Frazier fan since the '64 Olympics and by '67 with the Jones and Chuvalo fights it was clear to me that Joe was going to be a real beast.

Great tussle despite the dominant nature of Morales win,Ayala never really got going until the 9th but what an effort from him in those last few rounds to hang in there with Morales,it was a beautiful display of box/fighting from Erik

Chris Eubank vs Michael Watson 1+2

I never thought much of the 1st fight,thought Eubank was the deserved winner despite what i'd read over the years but i just watched the rematch in its entirety for 1st time and it was a classic,its unfortunate the brain damage Watson overshadowed his efforts in the fight,it was coloussal,from both guys really,an absolute classic,i doubt i'll ever watch it again though,its a tragedy what Michael has had to go through

I gotta say that this fight was a brutal affair. I have never seen so much savagery in a fight. A must watch for any boxing fan.

This is the third best fight that I have ever seen in my lifetime, behind Leonard-Hearns I, and Chacon-Bazooka Limon IV. I recommend anyone to see this gem. This fight makes anti-boxing advocates to really start a campaign against the fight game. Too much violence in their view.

Herrera's left hook to the body, and also to a lesser degree a counter right to the body off the Olivares jab, were absolutely sickening in that fight. The audio isn't great by modern standards but you can hear the impact so clearly sometimes. Herrera was a pretty fucken badass fighter.
