i read they used to repeat surnames twice because the audio on the mics was unreliable back in those days, so they did it to make sure ppl got 2 chances to hear the name of each fighter

I thought it pre dated even microphones, when they said the name to both sides of the venue.

Either way it is really annoying. It makes no sense anymore and is just a gimmick to get attention.

Fans will have become accustomed to his style of repeating the surname of each boxer twice when announcing them to the crowd.

For example, Diamante will introduce Anthony Joshua with an emphatic ‘ANTHONY JOSHUA!’, before pausing until the noise has subsided and then add another quieter ‘Joshua’.

This practice began in his days at smaller venues, where the announcer wanted to make sure the whole crowd heard the name of each competitor – even those at the back.

You're right, it was used early, 1920's, when the crowd was so big and the PA was so poor it was actually needed.

Ed Derian did it as a gimmick in the 80's

There's something not quite right about his story although I put it down to him over exaggerating his injuries in the same way that the guy in the office who is always off sick hasn't just got a cold, he's got a tropical disease and is lucky to be alive.

Tbf Diamante has always said he repeats the names twice as a nod back to the old times and said Ed Derian was a favourite of his who also done it, I don't think he's ever claimed to be the only one.

I agree with what you say here, I obviously wasn't clear in my post. My point was, if another current announcer started doing it, I'm sure he would claim that it is NOW his thing. Just my opinion based on observations though.

I wonder if the miracle man's able to pull his arm off as a trick at parties

or if someone needs to reach something from a really high space, can he pull off the one arm, and then hold it up with his other

We've gone from shock and saddened from his unfortunate incident, dicussing the fine margins of spinal injuries and recovery times, to digging a bit deeper into the man and unravelling a talent for miracle recoveries after biking accidents

Some people have always hated his double name announcement, others like it.
Some people like his somewhat sincere love for the sport and see him as a knowledgeable fan, others find him arrogant and false.

But when you take step back and look - we see a man of 50 years of age, white, tall with ridiculously long dreadlock hair, making a brand of himself, he has his catch phrase and he repeats boxers names to separate himself from his peers, very image conscious with his look, his hats and cigars, and of course his motorbike.
He's very much the opposite of what you're supposed to be as a middle aged bloke. So maybe he does love himself some attention.
