Re: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez | Showtime PPV - March 25, 2023
Plant lacked the conditioning to maintain a high punch output at Benavidez's centre. When Plant punched Benavidez did little but try to absorb the punches through his arms and gloves and by biting down hard. Plant's fight tactics were wrong; he should have been throwing 4-8 punch combos and then stepping left or right; Benavidez is not a crafty counter-man so this worked when Plant did it. Maybe Plant needs a trainer that can better evaluate his opposition to field attacks of greater effect and Plant needs a better conditioning coach, or get one if he doesn't have one already.
Re: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez | Showtime PPV - March 25, 2023
Plant faded just like he did against Canelo.
I had him one up by the halfway mark, then he took his foot off the gas, got tagged hard and couldn't come back from it.
Pretty disappointing really, he was definitely the better boxer.

That certainly likely. I believe Plant will outbox him but may succumb to the Bena's pressure in the late rds. If I were to wager, I'd put my money on Plant to win a decision (as you predicted) but this is not an easy fight to predict.
Good call. Plant did outbox Benavidez and he did fade towards the end.
We knew Benavidez has great stamina and that Plant, despite the ripped physique doesn't, but why is that?
It will also be interesting to see whether AJ has retained his fantastic conditioning he showed in the Usyk rematch.
Conditioning counts and should always be a high priority for anyone who has the courage to step into a boxing ring.
Re: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez | Showtime PPV - March 25, 2023
The fight lived up to the hype and the right man won the decision.
I had Plant up four rounds to one at the end of fifth, he was boxing well on the back foot and at times beating Benavidez to the punch.
Even though Plant had racked up these rounds he wasn't putting much of a dent in the armor of Benavidez whose chin throughout the fight was solid, Plant caught him on a number of occasions and Benavidez took it with relative ease.
Second half of the fight was different altogether, a mixture of Benavidez narrowing the distance and Plant's gas tank starting to deplete contributed to Benavidez getting through with more and more punches.
Plant's face started to mark up as Benavidez started pouring it on, I scored the tenth round for Benavidez 10-8, that's how dominant he'd become and the stoppage was looking a strong possibility.
Plant hung on but he took some serious punches during the last few rounds, his conditioning drive and will to win underlined a brave performance and showed his wasn't coming in to sit down, he really dug deep to stay in there.
What was very impressive about Benavidez performance was that he didn't react negatively to being behind by a few rounds, he didn't panic or make any radical on the spot changes to his style that may have derailed him, he just kept marching on and upping the tempo as the rounds passed and turned the fight around.
Benavidez has arrived at the big time, he really is a very exciting boxer to watch and he appears to be priming right now.
Plant was gracious in defeat as was Benavidez in victory, I loved the hype and trash talking leading up to it and creating a good buzz which they both delivered on.
Top quality fight and good for boxing.

So it was a good, competitive fight for a little while huh?
I'll be honest I expected Benavidez to just beat him the f*ck up in one sided fashion. So Plant did better than I thought it sounds like.
Re: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez | Showtime PPV - March 25, 2023
Honestly, i dont think Plant conditioning was worse than Benavidez. Punching power was the difference. Benavidez punches took out steam from Plant, Plant punches did nothing serious to Benavidez. Difference of the fight. Should Plant have pop in his hands fight would look different IMO.Thomastearns wrote: ↑26 Mar 2023, 15:43

Defeatist vibe.

First 5 rounds were very competitive Gil. Plant is a rather good boxer, and Benavidez is very one dimensional.

Re: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez | Showtime PPV - March 25, 2023
I had the first 5 rounds for Plant and the remaining ones for Benavidez. The thing is, Plant was winning his rounds closer than Benavidez was winning his ones.
I don't think, the problem is only in Plant's stamina. His game isn't good enough. He can be elusive, but good boxers calculate him. He doesn't have enough tools to trick everybody.
Re: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez | Showtime PPV - March 25, 2023
I wonder if Benevidez over-trained a bit? Plant a bit improved with Breadman training?Once DB got going he took over the fight. To me a 116-112 or 117-111 seems about right. A couple early rounds were even, not a shutout by Plant like some thought.
Bayless was more of an influence than he should have been.
Great show of sportsmanship by both guys at the end.

That's it, Benavidez hardly seemed fazed by what Plant was doing. He did get a little frustrated but he was never hurt.
Maybe Plant is just a little too light handed? Apart from that shock left hook that flattened Dirrell he hasn't displayed great power.
Plant did show great heart though, that was a nasty head clash in round 8 and Plant came off worse.
That fight reminded me a little of Lomachenko v Lopez, only that Benavidez didn't give away all of the first 6 rounds.
The big question for Benavidez now is, who's next?
Maybe if Canelo can look look really good ironing out Ryder in their exhibition bout for Cinqo de Mayo, and he fails to get Bivol for the rematch, he might want to treat his loyal fans to a real fight for Mexican Independence day in September?
Benavidez is certainly up for it.
"I have a lot of respect for Canelo Alvarez, but he has to give me that shot now. That’s what everybody wants to see, me vs Canelo, let’s make it happen in September.’
"It’s not I’m begging him or something, I have been mandatory for the past two fights so it is something I have earned. I showed in this fight I deserved to be in there."
If it happens that might just be the most interesting Canelo fight since GGG 1.
Re: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez | Showtime PPV - March 25, 2023
Plant all of a sudden was looked at as a big puncher after his last fight. Whatever.
I don't look at Benevidez as a huge puncher. More volume that wears guys down, and yes, results in ko's...sort of like Spence.
Benevidez will be a problem for anyone. I think Andrade has skills that trouble him, as does Morrell. I think Benevidez stops Canelo if they fight, due to their styles, unless Canelo stops him. War.

Re: Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez | Showtime PPV - March 25, 2023
Plant never, ever outboxed Benavidez. He kept it competitive from 1 to 5, but it was just that... competitive. After that, like, several of those rounds could've been called 10-8 considering the beating Plant took. IDK how you can walk away saying Benavidez is one-dimensional. You don't give a guy like Plant that kind of a beating being one-dimensional. And this was the best version of Plant ever. He learned from the Canelo bout and was off his career best performance against Dirrell.
