I know, 20lbs rehydration, I would love to know what Dobson weighed on fight night as he looked bigger than Benn.

definitely, it always makes me wince thinking of the impact it must have on the brain and other organs, dehydrating then rehydrating, especially when that body is then getting punched. It is something that worries me.

Out of date rules that should be addressed

totally agree. I've no idea how it would be policed/implemented though; has thought been given to it before?

Me too, because he looked about 2 weight classes above Benn.

Imo, weigh ins should be 48 hours prior to fight. The weight has to be made and there should be no more that say 5lbs increase on the day of the fight, so effectively 2 weigh ins, the first is official fight weight the second is allowance for hydration and sufficient dietary needs to keep the body healthy and safer for fight night.

It’s crazy to think Benn (normally a welterweight) was heavier than Marvin Hagler ever likely weighed in a fight due to same day weigh ins.

jaime munguia was a cruiserweight on the day of some of his light middle fights

weight may be the biggest difference between boxers of today and past generations. guys are weighing almost 30 pounds more than they could if they had to make weight on the day of the fight.. 'strength and conditioning'. 'big and strong'. 'strong at the weight'

terrence crawford has walked around at over 175 between fights...........and not being fat at all either. and he came from lightweight! it's why i LOL when looking at past hw champs who were in the 160s on fight day, such a different time.

It’s unfair to compare eras though, you can only rate fighters on how they were and fought at that time. If time travel was a thing and you could teleport these old time fighters to our era they would be cutting and rehydrating too. Only eight divisions in their era and one belt too, most of the guys who have won titles in this multi weight and multi belt era unlikely to get a shot at a title in the past, let alone win a belt.

I think this could still prove dangerous mate. They will just be keeping their weight artificially down until the day of the contest - and have less time to recover.

Somehow, fighting weight needs to be indexed to walking around weight!

I know some governing bodies (WBC?) used to have several pre-fight weigh ins during the build up. Not sure if they still do.

the link to walking around weight sounds good. Regarding the several weigh ins, I remember fighters talking about how they'd just crash weight to make them, probably just as unhealthy.

I’m sure one of the belts, maybe the IBF, had a rehydration clause, they would weigh a fighter on the day of the fight and they had to be within a certain limit, can’t remember the figures but 10lbs is ringing a bell.

Yeah that is part of the IBF rules.

Thing is 10lbs to the next morning is quite a lot for a flyweight but sod all for a light heavyweight so should probably relook even at that rule and make it a percentage.

you point out that if they fought today they would cut and rehydrate too - which makes it even crazier that you have guys in the 160s winning hw titles back then. cutting and rehydrating they weigh less than conor benn!

Yes but the sport was different in those times, you didn’t really have many big HWs who were skilled. That’s why I think you can only judge eras on what it was at that time. Even going back to the 70s, Foreman was classed as being a huge HW when he was 6’3” and 220lbs. Today we have CWs who are bigger than him.

very true. Are people bigger, or just bigger people fighting?
