407 is not a bad score at all - lets see how the Aussies get on though they could get a few runs here I reckon they've got far more depth in their batting.

at least its competetive hey benno! :TU:

Good to see, Looks like a batters pitch if one of our top 6 can fire i'm sure we can make 400-500.

of course mate but i think england may get the luck today, (but then im biased) over cast conditions ball will swing, not sure about ponting deciding to bowl after losing Mcgrath and on a placidish pitch that will breakup on days 4-5.

with warned you main threat id have batted and made england bat second on a detiorating pitch. gripping stuff, i love test cricket. :TU:

They're getting in the groove now though. Still not a lot in the pitch for the quick fellas, and Giles cant turn it for shit so he wont get the same joy Warne did. Could be a long day...

Hmmm.

I can't see us batting any time soon.

I can, however, see the Aussies scoring quickly to get to as big a total as possible then putting shed loads of pressure on us to bat out a couple of days.

Young Bell's got a lot to prove, home ground and all that. Talent in spades but maybe not ready for this arena yet.

Ah well, I'm off to be a cynic elsewhere.

You're dead right about Bell, he's not up to it. Maybe in the future but they really should get Thorpe back in his place if they can talk him into returning. They should have done it before this match to be honest.

PONTING IS BATITNG LIKE A GENIUS.

yip agreed Bell if he doesnt get runs in the 2nd innigs will be dropped i think, he is one for the future but its never best to blood these guys against the best in the world. Bangladesh to Aus is a bigger step up than from county cricket.

no thorpe now so you have to go with the man in form and play Collingwood. Vaughan at 3 Peiterson 4, collingwood 5..flintoff 6.

Dunno...

I was dribbling about Flintoff and Pietersen batting together before and they showed yesterday what they could do. Collingwood bats well with tail-enders (so to speak).

This idea of Tresco being reserve keeper / new keeper if Jones has any more calamaties is quite interesting.

Red Rob Key may be worth a look, especially if McGrath's out. Even Owais Shah.

And Neil Fairbrother, obviously, but that's a gimme.

The thing with Bell is that he doesn't seem ready but he is a real talent. Now they've picked him they should stick with him as no-one else seems to be making a real push for his place. Long-term he'll be quality.

collingwood is vastly underated as a test player IMO.
he also will sure up the fielding, Key wont he is a liabilty. Key is also a bit of a hick, he has had more chances already than the rest.

Agree Bell will be quality in time but question is do you want to win this series?

Jones is friggin awful, he couldnt catch the clap in a brothel. He has to be without out doubt the worst keeper in terms of glovework in the world internationally. I cant think of one worse now parore has retired.

However i dont think you can make tressie keeper in the tests, im not a fan of jeapoardising your keeper in favouratism of a batsmen, if he drops ponting or whoever on 2 and he gets a hundred he has to score a ton to even it out. (as happened with clarke in the last test)

its false economy in my mind.

Read is injured so not a hell of a lot to choose from though now, Matt prior perhaps but again is a tall order being introduced half way through the ashes with little experience against the likes of warne et al.

so in short i dont fornicating know.

Couldn't catch the clap in a brothel

Bells fucked if he don't score in the second innings, bring in Collingwood and play him behind Flintoff IMO, but its debatable. Jones isn't under as much pressure as Bell because of the lack of competition for his place, plus he batted reasonably well in the first test (in comparison to most).

Freddie and BIG Kev at the crease together yesterday was awesome and Trescothicks innings was class, its could to see the tail putting some runs on the board for us for a change.

yip hence my quandry tho if read were fit id play him.

i think its disgusting the way he was treated before. Told they would give jones a run inthe test team so he would play one dayers as they had done the other way round, then dropped read altogether.

he didnt do anything to deserve that imo.

118-3 at lunch ponting got himself out to ahsley giles non turning delivery, err hang on isnt that every delivery hahah, after lookiong set and some lax running gave England two bonus wickets when they needed them.

keep on top, dont let em off ther hook.

I know I may sound like I'm letting my Lancastrian-ness get the better of me but Warren Hegg, although no longer worth picking as a new try-out, has to be unlucky in the great 'keeper shake-up. Hegg, Fairbrother and Watkinson were all better than the opportunities they were given. That said, Ian Austin got caps.

Keith Piper was likewise unlucky.

The fact is that there aren't a bucket load of players pressing for test places.

Key's a form player - when he's not in form he's really ordinary, when he's in top nick then he's test class. Thing is, he slips in and out of form as quickly as his cheeks change colour.

David Sales is one who seems to have been overlooked as well. Not seen him this season, though.

take it you follow lancs then Coco!

agreed though hegg was worthy of more caps and fairbrother as was someone like ramprakash...if they had the same slection coninnuity then as they do now i swear Ramps could have been a legend.

tehy messed him aorudn so much, HE BATS AT 4 OR 5 CHAPS, not opener and not 6 or 7.....crying shame, so much talents wastedon the international stage, crying shame.

To be fair, it's clearly not just Lancastrian players that were cocked around but the selection in the 90s was appalling, Pick a guy, if he doesn't get a century or take ten wickets then drop him after a game.

The only guy who consistently got chances was Alec Stewart, he was abysmal early doors but they (/ his dad) kept faith with him and it paid off in the end. That's the main reason I'd like to see them stick it out with Bell. Not everyone can have Strauss's start to test cricket.

Back to this one though. Don't think they'll be following on.

Try 208 for 5, 325-odd all out I am going to plump for. Much depends on the next wicket

I agree, England seemed to select so many "losers".

Botham was the obvious "winner" of times gone, and he was always put down by the ECB and so on. I'm convinced we were more or less "told to lose" so as to not upset other nations or something

I always hated Stewert and Atherton, and Hussain too actually.

Flintoff and Pieterson are of the right mindset. Winning = everything ..not "being a nice chap"....
