Then you, Randy. Everything relates back to boxing. We were pretty young and this was the foundation of our adult lives (I even remember when Frank was young ) Sounds like most of us have done OK, great families! I appreciate when I see your beautiful family, as well as Frank's, Roger's, etc. I've met Dan's family, too. We all saw the Baltazar boys fight, but I had the privledge of seeing them from their earliest days, we came from the same place. This is where I hang out today, not in clubs, or with friends doing things I shouldn't. Your right about this site being our club.

THE PURPLE PLUM

Buddy Mazza won the Natinal Trouble Shooting Contest representing our high school. He credited his auto shop teacher Mr. Guffin,but Buddy always had a knack for working on cars.Funny though,he never worked as a professional mechanic. Oh he'd fix up cars around the neighborhood. He'd charge a fee,but he didn't seem serious about making a living at car repairs.

The drag strip was the fun thing to do on weekends. East County had a strip in Ramona. The one we liked to barrel into was north of us at Carlsbad. Buddy would work on the Purple Plum for that one.

Buddy and his brother Dave kept the Plum in the garage at their parents' house. Yeh,the Purple Plum was a beauty. '58 Chevy Bel Ait with a 327 and 4 barrel.Crower cam. A 5 speed on the floor ,painted a metallic dark purple. Why it was a thing of art. On Friday nights we'd find a sailor down at the beach to buy us beer and we'd go over to that garage to watch Buddy and his brother get the Plum ready for Carlsbad on Saturday.

They'd hang a lantern on the propped up hood and the two brothers would be changin' spark plugs,setting the valves,probing the timing light at the engine. They knew what they were doing.

We'd be drinking beer and listening to the radio. Oldies,but they weren't oldies then. We'd listen to the Art Leboe show. Little Richarrd,Chuck Berry,The Rightous Brothers,Little Anthony...the list went on and on. We'd talk about which girls on the Point were putting out ,sports,and how was the surf in the morning.

Tools would be all around.Car magazines on the work table.A few Playboys too. While Buddy and his brother would be under the hood, we'd be tellin' jokes and deciding where we were going to eat after things shut down. Maybe Oscars on Midway. Gordo's Taco Shop. There was always China Land,but you better get there before the bars closed.

Oh yeh,I forgot to tell ya' 'bout the Plum on Saturday night at the strip.When the lights on that Christmas Tree would get down to the bottom... No one came close to it.

When Johnnie would ref a Junior Gloves bout featuring a couple "pee-wees", you'd see a smile on his face.
You have to understand how proud I was to be a part of Flores' stable.
Names like Quarry, Hawkins, Navarro & others were taken seriously in those days.
Johnnie was among the best in professional boxing and bona-fide legend in amateur boxing.

As Frank knows, there was no better story teller than Johnnie Flores.
Whether the subject was boxing, his WW2 experiences, or just life growing up in Watts, after coming from Mexico as a child with his family. Rest his soul.

Thank you so much, Roger. On Tue. I have surgery on my nose to clear the passages left blocked from having it broken several times. They won't change the shape of it, just clear it out so I can breath easier for the first time in more than three decades. I'll probably look a little busted up myself on saturday. I wish you the best on your eye surgery. Again, Gracias amigo!

That's another thing Frank. The cars today all look the same. I bought a new Hyundai last year. I have to hit the panic button when I try to find it in the parking lot. All these cars have the same lines.

I'm trying to put together some photos of cars I had in the past.

I remember Baby Moons from the early 60's, Mags, slicks. Hot Rod Mag. My cousin was ten years older than me. When I was a kid, he had a 49 Merc, and he's kept it his entire life. In the late 60's, when he was in Viet Nam, he'd send home money to his mother and would put it into his car when he was home. He's had the car more than fifty years.

In 1949 my friend Coy's brother brought a 1949 Merc, black with a white rag top, what a beauty of a car that was...

The first car I brought was in 1951 when I was 15 years old, and was
a 1938 4 door Chevy sedan like the one pictured above, paid $50.00
for it. had it all fixed up, new paint, black, most of my cars have been black


A car like this 1940 2 door Chevy is what I had when Connie and I got married in
1954, also black btw, paid $125.00

Rick, imo black is the best color for cars.

In 1977 when things were going good I bought a new 1977
Cadillac Seville like this one pictured above, but black.
I have a couple of pictures of it some where., I'll see if I can fine'em.
