Not supposed to eat anything spicy,so the pizza is out. I'm not supposed to sign any documents for 24 hours. That must mean that I'm not myself. Can't see things clearly mentally or physically. Physically I can tell. The other part I'm not so sure. Maybe they have to tell me if I'm all right upstairs. I'm wearing this shield over this eye I had the surgery on. When I take it off I still might not be seeing clearly. I'm don't give a shit about the mental clarity. That's all a mtter of opinion anyway.

Watched TV waiting for the cataract operation. Saw the HBO documentary on Joe Louis. After the war the Coca Cola Company based in Atlanta makes Schmeling a multi millionaire as their representative in Germany. Joe Louis tries to pay back the IRS because he owes millions by being a wrestler. I remember the last day he was alive. I forget the fight where Joe was sitting ringside. They dressed him in a canary yellow jump suit and he sat there looking all alone with the Joe Louis face where you couldn't tell what was going through his mind. I remember whoever was announcing saying Joe Louis looked pretty good when they announced his name. The camera did a close up of his face. His lips were purple. His eyes rolled from side to side. I didn't think he looked good at all. His heart stopped beating that night.

Put in my video of Fellini's La Strada. Fellini put a lot of circuses in his movies. The Fool tells Gelsomina if a pebble has no purpose neither do the stars. Zampano cries on the beach saying he wants to be alone. So why is he crying?

Marciano was a topic I see. No one talks about his wife. If they do it's only in passing. The Marciano family wants to forget about her. Rocky seemed like he did. Not at home very much. My father didn't like her. I didn't want to pursue that.

So right now I'm not myself. When the drugs wear off I'll be myself. Tomorrow morning,I'll probably go back and delete this post. I bet I don't.
I remember that too, Roger. I think the fight was Berbick-Holmes.

The next day - the actual day Joe died - my friend Sean O'Grady decisioned Hilmer Kenty for the WBA lightweight title.

Pilipino icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is greeted by bellman at the Grosvenor House hotel as he arrives in downtown London for a mega UK media tour to announce his upcoming World Jr. Welterweight championship fight against Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton on May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Pacquiao and Hatton will stop first in Manchester Saturday to hold a press rally at the Trafford Center-Great Hall along with a friendly darts competition later in the day. On Sunday,Pacquiao will tour London followed by a press conference Monday at the Imperial War Museum.

“I am looking forward to the promotional tour that will be held in London and Manchester this weekend as I have received tons of emails from English boxing fans, who are one of the most passionate in the world. Even if it’s going to be hostile territory for me-as Ricky Hatton comes from this boxing-crazy country-I know that I will enjoy every minute of my brief stay there as I have heard a lot of great things about England, its notable people, its amazing culture and its proud history, ” said Pacquiao. ” After my trip to England, I will proceed to Los Angeles so I could kick off my preparation for Ricky Hatton, who is one of the world’s most exciting fighters.”

“Hatton is a very dangerous opponent as I have seen most of his high-caliber fight on video and you cannot take somebody like him lightly. This is going to be a big challenge for me. This early, I am confident in saying that I will train harder for Hatton and I won’t be surprised if I end up in a much better shape than when I fought the legendary Oscar De La Hoya last December. Once I report for training camp at the Wild Card under my very capable trainer Freddie Roach, my sole focus will be training. I will be eating, breathing and living Ricky Hatton from the day I start my training camp. I assure fight fans that when I get into the ring on May 2, I am going to show my best-as always-and ours will be an explosive and exciting fight. And most importantly, I am dedicating this important fight to my beloved countrymen and to all boxing fans from around the world.”
Manny won't enjoy his time in England. The weather is cold (that photo does not represent the biting February wind, believe me), Hatton's 'fans', most of whom only follow him because he supports the same football club as they do (Manchester City), could not even spell P-a-c-q-u-i-a-o and will jeer the little Filipino at every public event, and England is a pretty shitty country these days, anyway, overcrowded, dangerous and miserable. Everyone it seems is carrying a knife.
Already, the promotional antics have begun. Pacquiao looks to be wearing a top that looks ominously 'Red' (a Manchester United garment).

Lloyd Marshall
BORN June 4 1914; Madison County, Georgia
DIED August 6 1997; Sacramento, California
HEIGHT 5-10
WEIGHT 155 1/2-189 lbs
AMATEUR 212-17
PRO 64-24-4 (32 KO)

Marshall took up boxing at age 17 after moving to Cleveland. He had over 200 amateur fights, losing in the 1934 national semi-finals to Fred Apostoli and in the 1935 national amateur finals to Dave Clark.

Lloyd turned pro with ex-fighter Johnny Papke in 1936 and won 12 in a row before considering retirement due to injustices in the game. He teamed up with Frank Doljack (former outfielder for the Detroit Tigers) who was then playing ball in Sacremento. When Doljack didn't have the time to handle his career properly Marshall was signed over to Jim Edwards.

After the victory against Overlin, Lloyd became tangled up with mob figures and basically had his hands tied for the rest of his career.

All told he would go onto defeat eight fighters who held World Titles. His most impressive victories came against Ezzard Charles, whom he kayoed, and against Hall of Famer Charley Burley. Besides the obvious racial barriers in boxing, Marshall was hurt by the fact that he peaked while the titles were frozen during the war, and by the fact that he had a mediocre chin.

Chavez Sr. talks smack on Beltran
February 28, 2009 by Edgar Gonzalez

According to a recent post by pasiondeportiva.info, the legendary Julio Cesar Chaves Sr. stated that his sons Omar and Julio Cesar Jr. will not continune their careers with Tijuana promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions. Chavez Sr. went as far as to cancel the March 28th fight of Chavez Jr. in Tijuana, MX.

“Beltran is a fraud and my sons will no longer fight in his fight cards,” JC commented as he took part of the weekly meeting between the media and the WBC orchastrated by Mr. Jose Sulaiman.

Zanfer promotions, thru their Director of Public Relations Guillermo Brito declared that the March 28th fight card continues as programmed and that JC Chavez Sr.’s comments will not alter the plans.

“The fight is going to happen, in fact Julio Jr. has intensified his training for the mega fight that we are staging in Tijuana,” Brito declared. “We are ready for the fight card on March 28th, as far as for Chavez Sr., we hope that his comments are spur of the moment and I hope that in the coming days the relantionship is back to normal.”

Not only did Chavez Sr. announce that his sons will not fight in Zanfer Promotions fight cards but also spoke badly about how the Mexican promoter conducts business.

“He has the fighters standing in line at his office for weeks at a time and he has never shown me any respect. Young fighters that are starting out fighting four rounds, he only pays him 1000 pesos (US$70),” he accused.

Chavez Sr. was obviously upset with Beltran and accused him of living of the fighters.

“It is not just how he treats me and there is a lot of promoters so that is why my sons will not continue their careers with him.

He mentioned that on the trips that he made as a color analyst on TV Azteca on Beltran shows, he had to pay for his room and board, “nobody will be there for me at the airport, I had to look for my own taxis and Fernando never said anything.”

Obviously, Zanfer Promotions are not happy with the recent declarations but they are confident the the March 28th fight card will go as planned.

“The sons of Julio Cesar are happy with the way that we have handled their careers, this is just a passing thing and I am sure we will go back to being ok,” Brito affirmed.

None the less, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. did state that he didn’t care that Fernando Beltran had his son Jr. under contract.

“My sons will no longer be in his promotions,” he assured.

Chavez Sr. did emphasize that he did not have any issues with Top Rank or with its CEO Bob Arum, the U.S. promoter of his sons, he clairified that the problem was with Beltran and not Arum.

HE PLAYED WITH HIS THUMB

I think most of the geniuses are self taught. Or if you want to call them the great ones, sure,go ahead.Wes Montgomery is in that realm. They say Cannonball Adderley saw him in a club in Indianapolis. Got the word out that there was a jazz guitar player who played with his thumb. Played chords as single notes when he soloed. Of course the cats all dug him right away.

I saw him perform with his brothers at a little place on Shelter Island in San Diego called the Mardi Gras. They called themselves The Mastersounds. Before that area got real touristy and they eventually tore down the Mardi Gras to put up a bank. The club was small, not in the black area, but kind of beatnikish. When jazz flowed into that world and was embraced.

Wes Montgomery was the boss with that big Gibson guitar. He had a thick neck and long fingers. You always look at the fingers of the musicians that made the notes with them. Gots to have the fingers or your fighting a losing battle.

Wes would start playing single notes when he'd begin his solo. Then like that, the octave chords would become the line. It was like he was looking around the universe. They once asked him if he planned anything when he'd start playing those chords. It was unique for the time. Planninig? Geniuses don't plan. They react and feel. Gale Sayers never planned a run.He saw daylight and took off. Sugar Ray Robinson saw an opening and let his hands go.

The geniuses are instinctive. No text books when it came to their greatest moments. It's good that Wes Montgomery never had a guitar teacher that would have said that you don't play with your thumb.

Rog,

Glad to here that your surgery went well, now you'll be able to get rid of the white cane with the red tip.... :TU:
Yeh,you're right Frank. Trying to feel a girl up with a cane isn't very romantic

HOW MUCH WOULD IT TAKE?

I've become a fan of Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather. Let me qualify that. Since he's retired. This dude by the name of Rick Schwartz on Yahoo News is interviewing Mayweather thinking that his spiel is going to convince Mayweather to take off his trousers again.

This Mayweather is a better act since he put his pants back on for good. He calls himself the Former Pound By Pound Best.FORMER. This Schwartz wise guy is talking,"Well how much would it take?" Like Mayweather has never thought about making money before. I believe "Money" was another thing he called himself.

I like "Money" because he says he's got enough money. He's also got his mental faculties. But this Schwartz kept it up with Pacquiao and making money, like he's a genius when it comes to convincing.

I want to see you Schwartz in there with Mayweather. Floyd wouldn't have to train. He'd still be undefeated. And he'd shut your mouth.

A hippy once told me Ringo Starr was the greatest drum player of all time. I said I didn't think so. However one of these two might qualify.
Buddy Rich . . .

Roger . . . One of my closest friends, Ralph Barone, grew up on Staton Island. Ralph's family is "connected" on his mom's side, but his dad's family were all NYC cops. His dad, Bill, was a tough guy. He was a teamster and he used to be Buddy Rich's bus driver. Whenever Rich would go on the road, Bill Barone was his driver and they were together for years. I met Ralph on 1976, when we both started our careers in the film business at Universal. We became life long friends. His dad and Rich have both since passed, but I used to love to hear the stories that Buddy Rich had told my friend about his pop, "'Ol Willie" as Rich would call him. And just for the record, I'm no music expert, but I'll take Buddy Rich in a drummer comp over anybody. :TU:

Back row, Monroe Ratliff, Howard Smith & Charlie Powell. Front row, Bill Young, Joey Olmos, Danny Valdivia, Larry Montalvo & I. Ratliff, Smith, Powell, Young, Montalvo and I were presented with the "Joe Louis Humanitarian Award" by Olmos and Valdivia at the "Women Behind The Boxer Award" luncheon, it was a surprise to say the least for me.

I saw Buddy Rich playing a gig down in San Diego at a place called Humphrey's. Not what I'd call a down home joint. Really for the tourists, but Buddy Rich breaks into his solo. He's keeping time with a number that's real up beat. Fast tempos. All of a sudden he breaks away drom his drums and starts tapping his sticks on the wall behind him. Then he moves down to the floor and is beating on tables ,bald heads ,table lamps. He's working his way around the room keeping time with his sticks on anything in his way. He finally works his way back up to the stage behind his drum set continuing his solo. He never missed a beat. He was a conceited guy. Called himself a genius, and he was.

You earned it, Frank. :TU:
I think the Joe Louis connection is perfect. I know that you and the Brown Bomber spent a little time together in Miami, and that he was one of your favorites. Joe Louis was Johnnie Flores favorite heavyweight champ.

Haven't seen Charley Powell in years. How's he doing? Looks like it was a good event.
