Sharkey takes a hard fought UD.

Jones catches Leon flush in the 5th with a straight right, and sends Spinks to la la land.

At their absolute peaks...

Oscar Bonavena vs Ray Mercer, 15 RDS
Bonavena is too good of an all round fighter and too tough mentally for Mercer, who has good moments but also slips out of the fight for periods.

Buzz- apologies, this is going over the head of the panama Joe Gans matchup but i am fecked if I could answer that one.

anyways, supermiddleweight tripleheader, nice easy one to get the thread flow going again:

In what can only turn out to be a brutal slugfest:

Merqui Sosa - Librado Andrade. call it 15 rounds for the sadists amongst us.

then a boxer/puncher vs brawler matchup

Mikkel Kessler - Nigel Benn 12 rounds

finally

James Toney (PCW vintage) - Joe Calzaghe (Charles Brewer vintage) 15 rounds

Andrada wins by TKO in my opinion.

__

Benn schools Kessler and finally stops him in the latter rounds. Can't see how someone's only recognized big bout is a Loss to Calzaghe, and only beaten Mandatories and Tomato cans. Benn is just leagues above Kessler

__

Toney by late stoppage. Sorry, not sure what you meant by "Charles Brewer vintage". Any version of Joe loses to a Prime Toney.
If old man Hopkins can put him down in the first, and a shot to bits RJJ can do the same, Toney would dominate Joe.

Toney v Haye. CW

Brewer vintage = circa 2001/2 before his hands were so fooked that they made the concept of powerpunching laughable in Calzaghe's case, basically. but thanks :TU:

Oh and Toney KO's Haye sometime after the middle rounds :TU:

Wilfredo Gomez - Israel Vazquez 15 rounds at 122lbs. sorry if thats been done before.

dont know how they got on last time but here its gomez all the way.
in fact he looks like a world beater for the first time in his career. from the off bazooka puts his top level defeats behind him and dominates vasquez.
a crunching right to the jaw puts his opponent down in round 3 for an 8 count and he doesnt waste time in repeating the trick a few seconds later this time for the 10.

gomez KO 3

can gomez show the same form against a peak british super bantam in michael brodie?

WILFREDO GOMEZ V MICHAEL BRODIE

undercard
middleweight clash;

steve collins v kelly pavlik

Gomez by KO in 6 rounds.

Pavlik by mid to late round TKO.

Bruce Curry vs Micky Ward

That would be a slug fest. Ward by body shot stoppage in 7. He had a better chin.

Thing with Mustapha Hamsho, he only really keep short up against the elite, and that was Hagler.

So i think Mustapha Hamsho will be able to get away against the weight drained AA, and get himself a UD.

Sticking with him

Mustapha Hamsho V Pavlik

Hamsho by decision, I don't think kelly could hurt him and would get roughed up on the inside. I hated Hamsho in my youth, but he was a tough SOB and if not for Marvin, would have been a belt holder.

Saad vs Moorer 12 & 15.

Saad stops Moorer late after some brutal slugfest rounds.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs John Conteh
15 rounds
light heavyweight

Antonio Esparragoza vs Danny "Little Red" Lopez
15 rounds
featherweight

Mando Ramos vs Carlos Ortiz
15 rounds
lightweight

Qawi bobs and weaves his way inside, forces Conteh into a slugfest (like Ahumada did), and battles his way to a hard-fought but fair decision.
mhagler91490 wrote:Antonio Esparragoza vs Danny "Little Red" Lopez

This is a hard one to call. Esparragoza may have been more well-rounded, but I don't think his talents were proven against top flight opposition.

This might be going against the grain, but I think Lopez was quicker and straighter with his right hand, and would find a home with it to win either by decision or possibly late stoppage.
mhagler91490 wrote:Mando Ramos vs Carlos Ortiz

Ramos makes it an interesting fight early, but soon the all-around skill and class of Ortiz takes its toll, and he busts up Ramos to a late stoppage win.

Next up: Kid Gavilan vs. Terry Norris @ catchweight 152. (Norris makes that weight comfortably anyway).

Norris's power proves to be the deciding factor, and Gavilan is constantly being pushed against the ropes and bullied. 15 hard fought rounds later, Norris emerges with the UD.

Ezzard Charles vs Michael Moorer at a catchweight of 185

Charles's superior skill makes the difference and he stops Moorer in the middle rounds.

Jiro Wantanabe vs "Kid" Akeem Anifowoshe
12 rounds
super flyweight

wantanabe stops "the kid" in 11 rounds. he was ahead on all cards and akeem seemed to lose heart. this gave jiro even more encouragement and a painful combo spelt the end.

lets test both fighters. mustapha hamsho liked a ruck but here he concedes weight to another guy who likes to mix it up - perhaps unwisely this time - carl froch.
SUPERMIDDLEWEIGHT BATTLE

Hamsho takes in on points. Froch a bit too limited, and barring any late round collapse by Hamsho, he takes a UD.

James Toney vs Michael Moorer @ 190

Very interesting battle, in which Toney's vast advantage in experience are the difference. A close, but clear, decision.

Main Event: Jimmy Ellis & Michael Moorer, over twelve rounds.

Undercard: Ingemar Johansson tackles Jimmy Braddock, fifteen-rounder...

Moorer vs Ellis would be a good match. I see Moorer winning the close
decision in a decent match for the boxing purists.

Moorer MD.

Braddock looks good and box's well, but he is forever being stalked by
Ingo who manages to land the right hand which drops Braddock in the
5th. Unable to recover the Ref stops the fight after another series of
combinations.

Johannson TKO 6.

Virgil Hill Vs Doug Jones, 15 rounds

i'll handle this one :D jones makes this fight a snooze fest but is too quick for hearns and wins a decision.

sam langford vs. henry armstrong at 140. btw, i might want to see this fight more than any other fantasy match-up i can think of.

Be Gans, might've beaten Armstrong, too. Langford on a split.

Fifteen rounds apiece --- Napoles vs. Hearns. First, at Welter. An immediate rematch at Middle. Thoughts?

Napoles edges it at 147 on a SD, and Hearns makes his power felt at 160, and stops a blown up Napoles in 9.

Paulie Ayala vs Jorge Arce @ 118, over 12 rounds

Re: Hypothetical Match-Up Game

Ayala is far too classy (provided he's at his best) for Arce, IMO. I think he sharply counters & batters Arce over nine rounds, before the corner steps in. Ayala in nine, having stolen six of the eight completed rounds.

Main Event: 2008 Miguel Cotto (32-1-0) vs. 1994 Julio Cesar Chavez (89-1-1) at Welterweight in a twelve-rounder...

Each coming off inaugural losses. Who gets the chocolates?

Undercard: 2000 Fernando Vargas (22-0-0) vs. 1983 Wilfred Benitez (44-2-1) at Jr. Middleweight in a fifteen-rounder...

Benitez's skills & experience, or Vargas' size & raw strength?
