On top of getting me added to Boxrec.com. Bruce was kind enough to send me the Ring magazines that had mention of me, and the Ring magazine covering the main event at the Aladdin Hotel featuring Mike Quarry vs Tom Bethea. I fought on the undercard. I am overwhelmed by his generosity and his willingness to put forth this effort on my behalf. I won't forget. My wife and daughters were overjoyed to see my name in the Ring Magazine, knowing what it means to me. You made me look good in front of my family Bruce.

Bruce, to use Brian's expression, you're a stand up guy!! It doesn't get any better than that.

I was gald to do it and even more glad that your family was so excited for you and lets be truthfull you certainly didn't need me to look good in front of your family this just gave them a chance to show you and I feel good to be a part of that. Would you ever have guessed that something you did, like boxing, 35 years ago is still bringing you such pride and pleasure?
And Frank, I'm not giving up on finding more of Bobby's info. but without a little more info I feel like I am at a standstill.
I'm also tracking some leads on a fight that Rick had at the Circle Star Theater just down the street from me that never got posted on his record.

Martinez captures Cook’s super-featherweight title

MANCHESTER, England (AP)—Roman Martinez knocked out Nicky Cook in the fourth round Saturday night to capture the WBO super-featherweight belt.

The 29-year-old Cook, who won the title in September, had been in control of his first defense until the Brit was floored by a left uppercut in the fourth round.

Shortly after Cook got up from the canvas, the Puerto Rican mandatory challenger landed a powerful left hook. As Cook (29-2) struggled to get up again, referee Dave Parris called a halt to the bout at MEN Arena in northern England.

Martinez (21-0-1, 13 KOs) was fighting on the undercard of the matchup between Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Talked with Scartissue today, and he told me to look for Roman Martinez to take the title.

Previously unknown talent, low budget, gritty photograpy . . . brilliant script, exceptional young cast.
It earned it's Oscars, in my opinion.

As always, last week's phenomenon becomes an ordinary event this week.

Remember the piece here about the Irish settler seen gnawing away at the glass window of a parked car in Coronado?

Let Lucile McNeil of Independence, Cal., tell about her claustrophobic mongrel, Cappy.

One time in Salt Lake City she left Cappy, a girl dog, in the car while she and her husband went to a theater. Half an hour later Cappy was in the theater looking for them. There was a jagged hole in the window Lucile had left lowered for ventilation.

Six months later in Lone Pine Cappy, who hated containment, did it again.

Two years later while having lunch with a friend in a Pomona restaurant the dog came into their booth. Refused admittance at the front door, Cappy had gone around to the the rear and come in through the kitchen.

In all cases Cappy had cut her mouth but didn't swallow the glass.

In a WBO lightweight eliminator, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Amir Khan (20-1, 15 KO’s) won a five round technical decision over legendary “Baby Faced Assassin” Marco Antonio Barrera (65-7, 42 KOs) on Saturday night at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England. Barrera suffered a deep cut from an unintentional headbutt in round one that bled heavily from that point on. Khan was faster and very sharp, often punishing the bloodied Barrera on the ropes. Doctors looked at the cut in the fourth, but Barrera insisted on continuing, but then the fight was stopped because of the cut during the following round. Scores were 50-44, 50-45, 50-45.

I couldn’t see, if I could see it would have been a different outcome,” Said Barrera. “His fast , but I didn’t feel his power.”

In a clash for the vacant interim version of the WBO cruiser weight title, the Cinderella story of Ola “Kryptonite” Afolabi (14-1-3, 6 KOs) continued with a shocking ninth round knockout of former champion Enzo Maccarinelli (29-3, 22 KOs). A big right hand ended it at 1:50.

Rick and Bennie, thanks guys. It's always a bit of fun when you tap a fighter for success early in their career and then see the career gel. Although Roman has a long rode to climb yet. Bennie, did you see the fights? I'd be more interested in your views of Barrera-Khan and Cook-Martinez than some of the scribes writing for the trade papers these days. How did the fights unfold in your opinion?

THE CROSS

Haven't been across the border in over a month. That's a long time for me. Got a hair cut. Went to the farmacy to get some meds. I see the peso has gone from 11 to 1 to almost 15 to 1. Store fronts are vacant.Premium gas is 3.60 a gallon. More beggars on the street. First time I didn't see a tourist on Revolucion Street. Even the line coming back was sparse with cars.

I passed a few little cafes. The warm smell of their kitchens are very recognizable.Tomatos,manteca,chiles cooking on stoves. The thing was I didn't see a customer inside. Mexico hasn't converted to daylight savings time yet so I was pretty early walking around trying to find a barber shop. Finally one opened.

The barbers work slow. They are meticulous. Trimming around the nose and ears. Using the scissors a lot. The straight razor. They're somewhat like artists. I got it cut short this time.

As I was walking to the farmacy where I go to to buy things, (don't hassle with the prescription down there.) ,I passed an alley . Deep in the back were two of those stripe painted burros that stand on the corner where you can sit on them and get your picture taken. For some reason I turned and entered the alley. The burros were eating hay that someone had left for them. As i got up to one of the burros,I heard a noise behind me. A footstep. I looked over my shoulder .It was this bum. I could smell him . That bum smell of strong body odor. He was holding a bottle by his side. He looked like a hype. That part of TJ downtown below Ravolucion Street is full of needles and rags on the ground where bums live and sleep. In alleys mostly.The smell of urine is overpowering.

The bum saw that I was wearing a pouch around my waist. I didn't say anything. He didn't either. I saw him raise the bottle like he was going to hit me. He was reeling a little. Unsteady. I grabbed him with my left hand on his forearm. I could feel his strength that he wanted to get free and probably hit me with the bottle. With everything I had I hit him right on the jaw with my right hand. He stumbled backwards and fell against the wall. There was no one else around.

I ducked around the corner from where I entered the alley,walked directly to the parking lot where my car was,and drove off. I drove to another farmacy away from that area.

As I was waiting in line at the border,I got to thinking how desperate things are getting in Tijuana. It's every man for himself.

Rog, y'see! That hammering you took from Ken Norton was worth it. You definitely picked up some nice pointers there, amigo. Seriously though, from what I watch on the news, it really is time to find a barber in San Diego, my friend.
