I'm sorry to say that this was the worst British title fight I've seen in recent years. Vassell looked like he was fighting in slow motion, his punches were so slow it looked like he was weight lifter. Frankie Gavin had a bad night also . Two punches - right jab and left cross -no variation - and when he landed flush it had no effect on Vassell.
On this showing Frankie Gavin has reached his limit and even in this country ,any top level challenger who can move quickly to his right and pop off left jabs will win handsomely.

Maybe there was a reason Denton looked like that. He certainly hasn't against anyone else and said he felt better than ever going in. Apart from Khan, who would start favourite for you against Gavin now Brook is moving up? Lynes? Purdy? I will gladly bet you all day long.

I've a sneaky feeling that Colin Lynes could well outpoint Gavin. I don't think his team would ever have considered putting him in with Kell Brook - he's not at that level - sorry but there you are . However he is the British champion and he's undefeated and you can't knock that.

The worst British title fight since Gavin v Witter.

I'd like to see Frankie with a strength & conditioning coach - with a fundamental knowledge of sports pychology.
Those are the weak areas of his game - but otherwise, it was a solid win.
Might not have been the prettiest at times, nor could you shake the feeling Vassell was saving himself for a strong finish - but the facts on paper are that whilst the fight was in motion that Frankie was winning clearly and won by stoppage over a big, strong, determined and unbeaten opponent.
Well done indeed.

What hes Brook done, ever, that suggests he is at a higher level than Frankie. Don't be brainwashed by Ringside and Betfair ads...
And as for Lynes... Really? Words fail me!

He had Kerry Kayes in his corner. Surely he must have some input into all that. I too think he should be at 10st but thought last night he looked less fleshy than he has in the past at Welter and he more than held is own in the clinches.

You can't have seen many British title fights in recent years.

Agree, compared to Gavin he did look very slow

You mean apart from breaking his jaw? And was there no variation to the body? Or when he span Vassell three or four times and caught him on the way past? Jesus....

What it showed was that Gavin's limit is higher than was perhaps thought by some. They said Witter would do it, they said Vassell would do it... Still waiting

Frankie really buzzed Denton early in the 1st, might of been when the jaw went.

I think that Denton was surprised at how hard Frankie hit and how physically strong he is; the majority of the bout Denton was moving straight into shots; not a good game plan; he also did not cope with the southpaw stance and Gavin is a very good southpaw; he'll take some beating and someone said earlier that they felt he's got a good chin; I agree and he has confidence in it, he wasn't a scardey cat when Denton got right in there. It was an ugly bout but I've to say that Frankie did very well Vassell is a good boxer.

I thought it might have been 28 seconds into round 6, it seemed to swell a bit after that and Frankie caught him on the jaw three times afterwards, probably most notably with one minute left on the clock. However Bunce did say that he heard from Tommy Gilmour it was as early as the second round.

I'm suprised at the negativity towards Gavin on here. I thought he looked really good last night, probably the best i've seen him fight. I thought Vassell was going to be a real handful but wasn't at all, because of the movement, speed and angles presented him. I would take the Gavin of last against Lynes any time

I have a sneaky feeling that Colin Lynes will get well beat, the sort of beating that his corner would throw in the towel around rounds 6-9 !

Great win for Frankie Gavin last night, probably the best performance of his career IMO,I do agree that the ref was a bit lentiant on Gavins use of head and holding but nonetheless he boxed Denton Vassells ears off,i was dissapointed in Vassell,i fancied him to outpoint Gavin but he looked sluggish and apart from the right hand he caught Frankie with in the 5th(?) he struggled with the Southpaw stance and never really got going, its never satisfactory when a fight ends on an injury, especially a unification fight between 2 unbeatens,i think it would be a disservice to Denton to say he would have"lost the fight clearly anyway" ive give him the benefit of the doubt and say he could have turned the fight around as he was an unbeaten champion so you just never know(although i think he was about to lose clearly anyhow)

I think a lot of the very favourable comments for Frankie Gavin are from FANS of his , and that's OK, I would be the same. But I really do insist that this was the worst British title fight in recent memory ,apart maybe , when I think about it , the Kenny Anderson one.
I find it incredible that someone who knows anything about boxing thinks that Gavin could have handled Kell Brook !!! I don't have anything at all against Frankie Gavin but if and when he gets stepped up , please , all of you have the decency to come back on here and admit he's limited.
And I still say that a fit ( and much older) Colin Lynes would embarass him. How on earth could Denton Vassell walk on to as many straight left hands from a one dimensional southpaw beats me .
To be perfectly honest with you, Gavin is a good boxer , great amateur pedigree , and has done everything asked of him so far. And he's not as limited as I'm suggesting ( I'm being a bit over the top ) but I'm just trying to dampen down the adulation a little bit. He is no superstar at the moment.

You mean the same Colin Lynes who lost to Junior Witter?

'The punches had no effect' Why is Denton Vassell waking up with a broken jaw then?

I'm struggling to see how someone with any knowledge of boxing could pick Lynes over Gavin. I can't see what Brook has done that is better than Frankie. The Carson Jones form line was shown for what it was by Dean Byrne. I would tip Gavin to win on points. Brook is an on top fighter who would get very frustrated early on.

I'm an armchair fan and do think that Gavin would be a nightmare for Brook who struggled terribly with Carson Jones and hasn't really moved on since before that bout, (his eliminator was a patsy).

Mickey 1975 mentioned Purdy and Lynes earlier on this morning that's the only reason I brought up Lynes. Lynes and Gavin will never fight because Lynes is virtually retired. All I'm saying is that a skilful boxer like Lynes was at his peak would have beaten Gavin. Witter at his peak would have toyed with Gavin. Brook would stop him very early. I hope his trainer and management team are not as blinkered as some on here.
But I'm not a Gavin hater - far form it - and I wish him all the best -but he is LIMITED. If I'm wrong and he goes on to reach world class then I'll come on here and admit I've got it horribly wrong. I hope he's enjoying his victory last night and I wouldn't want him to be disappointed in any way. He done what he had to do against an opponent who sent a telegram everytime he went to throw a punch. At the top level in the middle weight categories you have to be quick. Gavin's not. Sorry !!

I dont really understand what you're basing that on though! He had a crap performace against Curtis Woodhouse although Curtis performed really well on the night aswell but other than that he's looked good! Vassel looked completely out of his depth last night and couldnt cope with Gavins movement and counter-punching ability. To say that Frankie cant compete with the people you've mentioned is ludicrous.

Ive been one of those who have never been entirely convinced about Gavin despite his world class amateur pedigree, mostly because he,s laboured to a few decision wins,Curtis Woodhouse and Young Mutley spring to mind plus outside issues and inactivity i was thinking he was in danger of missing the boat but he seems to be getting a little bit of momentum going and now he is a duel titlist so onwards and upwards hopefully but i gotta say despite Vassells lacklustre performance i was very impressed with Gavin last night,at last im finally starting to see what mostly everyone else sees

I dont think it's any coincidence that if you speak to a lot of british fighters they will say the same a lot of us are saying! I remember Tony Jeffries saying he's the most talented boxer he's been around and Tony Bellew said similar things. There's been others aswell who have said the same. His ability to anticipate what his opponent is going to throw and then counter is second to none.
