Foreman v Morrison. I naively expected a shootout in that one rather than 12 rounds of boxing on the back foot.

Yep would have cost you a lot as well, lucky escape. The ring walk was good though, set the scene nicely.

Hopkins v Winky Wright. The so called modern equivalents of Charley Burley, Ezzard Charles & Archie Moore in an untidy borefest. No clean and compact punching. Even worst, the outcome was basically decided by the weight. If it was at middleweight you’d have seen something at least genuine. But up around light heavyweight, Hopkins was never going to lose, and Winky - soft-ish and flat footed even at 160 - had no chance of combating basically smash & grab antics of “The executioner.”

Wlad v Ibragimov - horrible heavyweight unification.

I actually did enjoy that and also Hopkins v Keith Holmes. Although, I didn’t stay up for those.

Hopkins threw hundreds of punches against Johnson and Trinidad. The performance against Johnson is a little under rated IMO even if Johnson was green, Hopkins absolutely peppered him and showed great offensive skill, output and variety.

Great call on Hopkins v Johnson. Only reason I chose Hopkins-Joppy over the Johnson fight is that Joppy went the full 12. But definitely, a great performance & Bernard was all over him. The “teak tough” Glengoffe was weeping after this drubbing.

By the way Philly junior middle Julian Williams’ recent win over Jarrett Hurt reminds me a lot of the Hopkins from the Johnson & Joppy contests.

Don’t remember Hopkins being as proactive vs Trinidad - only reason is he used so much (highly effective) circling.

Didn’t come to close to landing anything near that number until 12 years later when he landed 247 punches on Karo Murat.

perhaps I exaggerated slightly, IIRC Hopkins was throwing 80-90 punches a round in the last 2-3 rounds at least.

You may be right. He might have been throwing lots, just not landing a lot

Hopkins was great vs Tito, circling and punching seamlessly. But he was surely more aggressive, active and free with his shots versus Joppy - because he stayed on top of him. The Joppy fight was almost uncharacteristic. Versus Johnson, he really was laying the combinations in thick.

It was many years when I saw it but Hopkins was coming forward & winging lots of shots - in spite of suffering knockdowns- in Ecuador for the first Mercado fight - a relatively exciting & controversial draw.

Likewise. Says something about Foreman that even in his 40's a young slugger doesn't want to mix it with him and turns into a mover for one night only.

I always regret staying up late for boxing nowadays regardless of the quality of the fight! Too old for it now. When it hits Wednesday the following week i fold like a cheap deck chair and proper struggle

Well it wasn't until about 2am that I figured out the card wasn't being shown on DAZN Japan; i.e. when the card had started and all that was showing up on the app was the Joshua Ruiz 1 fight, and the Smith Ryder card from a week or so before.

11 and a half rounds of nothing but Eastman posturing and stalking. When he actually tried something toward the end of the final round he had Joppy on the deck.
Joppy was there for the taking as it was his first fight since being wiped out by Trinidad 6 months prior.
What made it worse was the awful sound of the long wave radio-constant fading in and out of volume with loads of static noise. Awful.

Many of Bernard Hopkins fights.only good one was when joe smith jr bannged him out

I seem to remember he did a similar thing when he faced B-Hop a couple years later, in that he did very little. In the build up he said he would stop Hopkins in the 7th. The 7th round came and he did sod all!

Eastman appeared to have all the tools required to be a world class operator. Maybe he just lacked the attitude or mental fortitude.
