Woodhall was utterly brilliant when he beat Silvio Branco for the European middleweight title. Hardly ever gets mentioned, but it was an absolute masterclass from Woodhall
Very true, if not for the elbow trouble, King keeping him away from K.Holmes for 18 months and Yanks knocking on his hotel room door at 4am among many other dishonest tactics etc he would take some beating at his natural weight (middle) with that height, reach, tight defence, jab, timing, amateur exp, close fighter-trainer r/ship & trust, tactical nouse, and the fact he could actually straighten his right arm.

In Telford at 160 in 94 I pick him over Jorge Castro all day long by unanimous decision

I've been wondering how they do that. Does the employer get a free set of shackles and tranquiliser with the candidate?

2 hours into the Richie Woodhall pod and it's another cracker :TU:

I can hardly believe it when Richie was saying he had an elbow operation within 2 weeks of the Keith Holmes fight :o How the 'eff did he still deliver that performance against a really tricky and awkward champion after an elbow operation? I'd expect to be out for months. These world class boxer are just a different breed.

He really opened up about that fight. I don't know if it is Woddhall's accent or the fact it cut him to the quick so much, but I had to laugh at the way poor Richie bemoaned his rotten luck...not in a spiteful way, but when he started muttering about have 'one f#ck1ng meal a day' it just sounds so comical. I remember when Holmes beat him I was absolutely gutted for Richie :verysad:

I thought Woodhall would beat Holmes. The Woodhall who fought Branco would've.

Keith Holmes was nothing special at all. He was no way as good as Woodhall.

I’m getting more and more confused as to what your agenda is, but this is just isn’t true.

Holmes was world class.

Holmes was an effective, world class boxer IMO but I also can't help but wonder what might have happened with Woodhall's chances had he just been able to compete on equal terms. Richie was mightily unlucky and I can only marvel at the effort he put in despite everything going against him :salut:

Eh?

He was world class, he was world champion. Nothing special at all though, and not as good as Richie Woodhall. He just wasn't.

Finished the Woodhall interview. Very good.
Richie said he's never watched the Holmes fight and never will. He's convinced he would have beaten him without the injury, but also graciously says he was beaten by the better man on the night.

Holmes is an underappreciated fighter , beat Richie handily and came over to stop a 33-0 Rob Mckraken

Don’t think I’ve ever watched a Keith Holmes fight, I’ll take everyone’s word for it.

Thought Woodhall came across as a proper good fella, that’s the thing about podcasts, and this one in particular, without editing or scripting and with the unusual length of them you really get a good overview of a character. For better or worse.

Woodall comes across as a real gentleman. I remember the build up to the Calzaghe fight. Very respectful. Great matchup between two world class Brits.

Those were the days, sigh!

Keith Holmes tried to chirpse my Mrs at the time. He came into Russell and Bromley in Kensington to buy shoes, and started saying how he was a world champion boxer, must have been just before he faced McCracken.

She showed me his business card, and sure enough...

Should have phoned him and offered him a dry slap.

Why did he have a business card? Why was he buying shoes that close to a fight? I’ll have to watch some of his fights, he seems like a cat

I was at that fight, was weird atmosphere because ingle got carried out on a stretcher in the fight before it. can remember going for a piss and two big groups of woodhall/calzaghe fans chanting and squaring up to each other...then someone started chanting "boxing, boxing, boxing" and they all joined in and the threat of trouble disappeared.

Why does our sport have the worst chants? Some of the ones at the footy are hilarious and we just adapt Winter Wonderland to every fighter ever

Alex Arthur's life story is good. Never short of something to say and good insight, him and Dixon bond well for an easy flowing interview.

The weight making stories are horrendous, almost hard to believe and I forgot or didn't know about the problems he had with his promoter FW.

Plenty of highlights and accounts of his fights from amateur to professional. A nice reminder of a very good career and likeable fellow :TU:

What probs did he have with FW?

Did he have anything to say about the Gomez fight?
