Graham Houston is back on board? I’ll definitely be buying it then. No one writes a better preview and he’s been doing it for 50 years

It’s hard to pick up a copy round here, who was doing the Crawford show previews?

Houston did that one - brilliant to see him back in print again, class oozes out of it.

veriton wrote: 03 Aug 2024, 12:41 Just got this week's and last week's after renewing subscription - great afternoon in the garden with both.

Graham Houston back on board and beefing up the previews. Shaun Brown and Declan Taylor both very strong writers so plenty of weight in there. Simpson v Chelli preview a cracker.

This week's history piece by Miles Templeton was brilliant. Old Timers really benefiting from the extra space and photos - for all the warbling about Ringside Charitable Trust from the previous editor, the old boys column didn't get much love.

Worsell's goodbye was interesting. I hope he carries on as freelance as I really think his output suffered by being used as a space filler. Once a month could bring the best out of him.

There was a cracking interview with an unsung amateur coach by Matt bozeat. Proper chips and gravy.

The design was first class too.

This week's is the strongest issue I've read in ages.
Thanks Veriton. Really appreciate that.

Miles Templeton

No, thank you Miles. It's a consistently brilliant column and one I look forward to every week. I'm really pleased it's got more space now to do it justice. This week's piece about the heir to the throne asking for a particular fight to be made was a particularly great read.

Yeah previously Mark Butcher got all 4 winners right and 3 bang on by method of victory.

I like the betting angle a lot. Hope it continues

He did. "Bakolie at 8/5 may be worth considering" and "I wouldn't rule out an upset and there are worse bets out there than Valenzuela at 3/1"

No he didn't. He said "I'd be inclined to wait til the weigh in before pulling the trigger on bets" and also "Cruz pressure and punch output could very well overtaxed Valenzuela".

He also said he was thinking about a Crawford 10th round knock out.

Jesus, Mickey.

I was tempted to travel a way to pick it up on Saturday, but I’ll definitely be getting the next big fight one to check out Houston’s previews. what a legend he is.
I reckon he gets 80 to 90% predictions right

Didn’t see the cruz one coming, I didn’t really look into it but I knew the other guy had been badly knocked out, so assumed pitbull would get to him

Still can’t get my head around the fact that Cruz is a light Welter.. he looks tiny. Someone needs to tell him to get rid of that dimestore dog mask he wears to the ring. He looks scarier without it

He did say that about the weigh in after the 8/5 quote and finished off the Valenzuela quote you mentioned with what I wrote! And.... his main bet of the Crawford fight was over 9.5 rounds! We read the same thing very differently!

In the latest boxing news there are TWO articles, taking up 7 pages, basically both on Rhiannon Dixon and both written by the same author, someone I’ve never heard of called Mark Baldwin.

WTF!?? Dixon is hardly a global let alone even British name of any note, who won a vacant WBO title… and gets 7 pages and 2 articles!?

So the question is WHY!???? BN is a joke now. Every issue has one or two solid articles but the rest seems dross. And giving Adam Smith, a guy who knows nothing about boxing, despite spending 30 years in the game is a further waste of print and paper.

I agree. I have cancelled my subscription this week. I've read it since 1999 and subscribed for years. I like the Bunce, Simon Euan-Smith and Miles Temperton articles but the rest is drivel. I don't think the new editor is good and there is clearly undue influence from third parties affecting their narrative now. As well as too many crap ads for their rubbish app and their joke of a clothing brand. Rob Tebbutt buying BN will be its death knell. As soon as this failed actor bought the publication, it's death knell was tolled.

Yeah and whilst I am a bettor and so enjoy the angle, the sudden insertion of betting tips on all the previews seem really out of place in boxing news. It’s a boxing paper not a betting paper.

It seems linked to the app which is used as a betting funnel. They obviously have some deal with a betting firm. Sadly the end can’t be far - there’s so much agenda, and third party influence, the independent boxing paper that everyone loved seems long gone.

2/1 odds it doesn't see 2026.

If im being charitable with the Rhiannon Dixon double story debacle it could be that they had a gaping copy hole to fill when dalton smith and then johnny fisher fell through, and got the writer to go through his notes to string something else out as filler. It doesnt look good though as that would have previously been an elliot worsell shaped hole to fill, and he would have produced something worthwhile.

I really dont like that they have dropped the panel page at the front and now the interview page at the back.

They're clearly making deep cuts, which is worrying but there's still enough in there to justify a subscription.

Avid reader since 1986, up until Claude Abrahams left (2009?).

The next new guy, Tris Dixon, came on-board and I still bought it for a while but noticed, in my, opinion, the quality was not there as it had been, previously. Very heavy on the AM stuff, which is ok, but almost half was dedicated to that, which was a big drop off, for me.

Judging by the comments, apart from when Matt Christie took over, it looks like it is still on a downward spiral. A shame.

I'm not bothered by the betting angle at all, it's giving their prognosis of a boxing result, it's not like they are giving out tips for the 12:53 at Doncaster.
