lightweight Diego Magdaleno is turning pro on the Top Rank (versus) card on Thursday.

From the press release:

"Magdaleno, a skilled lightweight with firepower, fought in the US Olympic Trials, was 111-16 overall and during 2007 was rated #1 in the USA at 132 pounds. He is a graduate of Clark High School in Las Vegas."

Clarence - did you see Diego on Versus? All we saw in So. Cal. was Vanes (who looked better than I've ever seen him - against no competition), a couple of baby whales (Tye Fields), and the main event. Did not see Diego.

Mel - give Vanes credit. He was going up against Dan Wallace who was 9-2. Not exactly no competition. Maybe Dan wasn't any competition for Vanes, but I think that speaks volumes about Vanes' skills not so much Dan's. Dan Wallace had somewhat limited amateur experience as he won the Michigan Golden Gloves novice division in 2002, but never won the open division. He turned pro in 2004. I didn't expect Dan to win, but Vanes stopping him in the 1st shows that Vanes is doing very well as a pro.

Dennis - In my opinion:

1. He should have stayed amateur another 4 years as he was just beginning to not slap and hold and get his basics down.

2. I have seen him twice on TV and once in person and he looked green as grass, almost losing twice to record padders, and boxing in a very frantic and novice manner. Not impressive.

3. I also know that Freddie Roach did not spend much, if any time with him, and, hopefully, his switch to Ronnie Shields will be for the best.

I was impressed with his performance, albeit short, last night in that he was throwing concise jabs and wasn't boxing wildly, as in the past. And we are going to have to agree to disagree that any boxer stopping a "record padder" or "tomato can" in the first round means they are doing well. Vanes is one of my very favorite boxers and I wish him well. I will also be critical where he, or any of the other boxers I've known, are concerned.

My impression, too!

I was disappointed that, with all the short rounds, they didn't show Diego's fight. Oh well.

Don't get me started on how distressing it is that he's apparently decided to represent Montana and started calling himself "Big Sky". Not what I want people to know the state for in boxing. :-?

Ohhhh - the "Big Sky" referred to the State? I thought maybe it was because he was so tall he reached the sky (and that's definitely reaching for an explanation!).

Unfortunately, no. Montana's unofficial nickname is Big Sky Country; it says that on the back of all of the Montana quarters and what not as well.

He isn't the only tall boxer to be laughable. Does anyone remember Ed "Too Tall" Jones' attempt at a boxing career?

Kolya - I KNOW Big Sky is the Montana "logo." Sheesh!

Remember What's-His-Name White? We had the horrific experience of seeing him in person many years ago. Ghastly.

Ah. Yeah, Tye is from Missoula, so my only guess is Big Sky refers to Montana, his home state. Frankly, when I see Tye, the first words in my mine are "Primo Carnera".

You must be talking about Mike "the Giant" White. He was born in Michigan but boxed out of California I believe.

Yep, there is another big guy with limited skills. However, Primo was only 6'5" or 6'6". Not 6'10" or taller like a lot of these guys.

Yep - that's his name. He was so unremarkable I couldn't remember it. And, yep, we had him in So. Calif. Wish he would have stayed in Michigan. :D

Well - let's see.......California: Andre Ward, Shane Mosley, Oscar DLH, Montel Griffen, Jose Navarro, Javier Molina, Shawn Estrada, Vanes, Fernando Vargas (even though I don't like to claim him), Robert Garcia, Antonio and Julio Diaz, Diego Corralles, Victor Ortiz (all from So. Cal. except for Ward and Diego) - and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.....

GR - we have Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Tony Tucker. The best may have been Stanley Ketchel in the early 1900's, but his life ended way too early. Sort of like Salvadore Sanchez - champ in early 20's and then died.

He still says GR is his hometown. Some people just don't like the cold. Right now we have winter storm warnings here in GR. Zero visibility on the highways. Lots of accidents and cars in the ditch.

Ahhhhh - Southern California on Christmas Eve. 70's, sunny and warm. Christmas Day is usually windy and in the 80's, however only 69 degrees is predicted for tomorrow. :( I don't do cold. :o
