I watched the BJ Penn vs Florian fight because it's free ATM and something struck me. As much as BJ Penn is a great grappler and outgrappled Florian without a huge amount of issues, I did notice how hard it looked for BJ in comparison to Aldo despite BJ getting a sub win. BJ had to work to pass guard and get mount etc where as when Aldo passed he made it look almost effortless. I want to see Aldo face Khabib win or lose for no other reason than I want to see just how good the guys grappling is.

I haven't seen him for a long time. From memory though he was fast and explosive but didn't have a great chin or defence either on the feet or on the ground. Decent enough fighter though.

Was having a look at the UFC rankings and it made me think, where is the new blood at LHW and HW to be looking out for? Feels like the top 4 or 5 at LHW have been round for years, and even guys like Manuwa who looked great in his last fight vs Saint Preux already has losses to the top 2 contenders. Is there just a gulf between the elite and the rest?

Heavyweight looks the same. Overeem, Hunt, Arlovski must be ancient now but they're all comfortably top 10 fighters in the rankings. From a casual point of view it seems as though there's a bit more of a turnover in the lower weights at least in regards to guys in with a shout of a title shot.

Am I right or wrong? What's the reason for what seems to be a lack of new fighters coming through at the higher weights?

I think the truth is that athletic guys who are 220lbs+ generally go into different sports if it's an option. Take Miocic for example, if he had ever been good enough to make the MLB(there was interest in him)there's no way he would be fighting today.

I also wonder with the way the UFC at times treats prospects if that puts a premature end to some guys' career. Chucking relatively inexperienced up and comers with power hitters like Hunt, JDS, Overeem etc could derail a promising career as well.

Derick Lewis and Francis Ngannou are getting a chance to break into the top 5-7 in their next fights though which could bring some much needed new blood.

Same goes for LHW I guess, I think Rumble could beat Cormier though. Which u see incredible because the dude used to somehow make WW.

If Jones was not as ectomorphic, and was built more like his brothers, he most likely would be in the NFL now anyway. Heck, guys on the practice squad make six figures.

High level heavyweight wrestlers will get hired as college coaches. Mocco had one loss (I scored it 29-28 for him) then got a job coaching at Lehigh. Ellis lost his second match, then went back to college coaching.

Then you have guys like Cole Konrad. He left bellator as champ because he realized he would make more money in an office than in the cage.

Prospects in the heavyweight ranks have other options. I guess that is why we don't see new blood in the division.

It is a "old division" Velasquez, Werdum, Overeem, JDS, Hunt, Arlovski ect, all on the wrong side of 30

There's some interesting new LHW blood rearing his head in the UFC...

Brendan schuab recently said on his podcast that she was angry at joe rogan, and didn't want to speak to him. As far as I knew they were friends, and she has been on his podcast before.
Has anyone heard anything about this cause I'd be interested to know why.
If I had to take a stab it could Be that he was very critical of her performance against holm?

She's been angry at Joe since she got knocked out against Holm. Remember Joe spoke about her getting finished by Holm and said things that could be taken negatively about her. She is angry at EVERYONE who spoke about her getting finished by Holm/Nunes or congratulated Holm/Nunes. She threatened to beat up Paige because she's a 'fair weather bitch' for congratulating Holm on her win.

Supposedly they offered Maia a #1 contender fight against Lawler, but he turned it down and said he will wait for the Woodley/Thompson II winner. That's a risky move and I hope it doesn't backfire on him.

He's earned his shot, if the last fight wasn't a draw he would be getting his shot now. I want to see him fight for the title and to be honest I would love to see him win. I always thought he was a bad style match up for GSP TBH.

I feel mostly the same I think out of the 2 Woodley can make more adjustments to get the W. It's still an interesting fight though I'll be watching and cheering for Wonderboy.

I just would love to see Maia get the shot next and take the title!

Yeah I'm thinking the same. I was actually surprised he didn't press forward more the first time. In fact it was wonderboy doing most of the pressing.
Thompson is quick enough to fight on the counter and get out of the way. I'm just not sure he'll be as effective backing up
