Thread clean-up time!

In one of those "dying fall" twilight-of-his-career type-victories, Jofre does everything a little too well for a very game Schoolboy Chacon, surviving a flash knockdown in the fourth to force a mercy stoppage around the ninth, with Bobby virtually blind from the swelling & the blood.

Miller & Battalino do something bizarre involving phantom knockdowns, slips which get counted as knockdowns, knockdowns which get counted as slips, & very little clean punching until the disgusted referee turns away & awards a no-contest. The crowd rip the seats out & storm the ring.

Curry outboxes a surprisingly sluggish Leonard, who doesn't look "up" for the fight. Until Curry gets hit flush with a big left hook, & flattened. Maybe ten rounds? Maybe less.

So...

Bennie is just too tough, and durable and grinds out a clear win over the game Mugabi who walks away wishing he had it to do over again. Why? Because he realized too late that he just fought Bennie's fight. Surprisingly no knock downs, and no one in real trouble, but Bennie just edges too many rounds. And it's all over by the 9th in terms of hope for Mugabi. He needed a KO and kept shootin for it instead of using his head.

Now Mugabi must face Fernando Vargas.

A cure for insomnia. Two of three judges fall asleep, the other scores it for Floyd by a clear margin, and wakes them up at the end if round 12, when they hastily copy his card. Floyd wins due to his speed, Winky has difficulty connecting and doesn't use his size to his advantage.

"The Wild Bull of The Pampas" comes out swinging as usual, with Bonavena meeting him head on!

Firpo drops Bonevena in the 2nd, with a cudgel right, however Bonevena is warming up. 3rd round, Firpo drops Bonevena again, this time Oscar gets up smiling and now starts bossing the action, in centre ring. Body shots start to dishearten Firpo.

Tiring and after a sustained flurry, with his back on the ropes, Luis goes down. Dis-heartened and fatigued, he takes the full count.

I have a lot of time for Moorer at this weight, & usually defend him against those who say he proved nothing against no one, but Tiger? Rough night...Moorer falls, IMO.

Arguello UD. A close battle at first, with the first 6 rounds split, but Arguello's punches take a greater toll and it's all Mosley can do to see it to the end.

Mugabi is made to look stupid for about six rounds, but mauls Sergio to death down the stretch. Mugabi KO, about the tenth/eleventh.

Lopez starts out the initial rounds outboxing Wilde with a mix of skill and speed at a measured distance. Wilde begins closing the gap however and catches a cocky Finito coming in defenseless and drops him. Lopez begins opening up more leading to a brawl with Wilde landing some big shots that shake Lopez, but taking several pinpoint blows to the head for his trouble. Lopez finally ends matters in the 9th round from an accumulation of blows putting down and out a battered and bleeding Wilde.

Exciting while it lasts, but a guy left rocking & rolling by Golota, & placed on Queer St. by Holyfield, had better have a tight defense against someone as swift as Tyson, considering the latter's punches. Bowe can make it interesting, but in the end, Tyson's power & delivery are just too dynamic. Tyson in four enthralling rounds, with both men hitting the deck. How about that? Iron Mike finally gets off the ringmat to win one.

Alexis Arguello & Julio Cesar Chavez --- A Trilogy of fifteen-rounders. Jr. Light, Light, & Jr. Welter! Both lads are entering the ring with ribs, but going home with soup in their place, I fancy...Who takes it?

Honestly, I'd take Chavez in all three matches. Arguello would find him an easy an willing target early, racking up plenty of style points, but Chavez would chug along a la Frazier and wade his way in with his trademark compact punches on the inside, slowly wearing Arguello down, and depending on the night either scrape away a close decision on the cards or stop Arguello late. I think the fight would be most explosive at Lightweight, where I'd say both are in their relative primes

Ricardo Mayorga vs. Roberto Duran at 147 (absolute prime for Mayorga of course, and just past the plateau for Hands of Stone)

Duran is off the deck in round three to maul & foul Mayorga into a corner submission by the eighth. Mayorga just too willing to stand & trade in the end to take advantage of his size & youth.

Maxxy Baer - Baer UD
Max Schmeling - Foreman late KO trailing on all cards
Jack Dempsey - I can see Dempsey winning a close decision here
Jim Jeffries - Foreman KO8
Joe Walcott - Walcott UD
Sonny Liston -Liston late TKO on ref stoppage

Mind you, many of these results would be different with a younger Foreman. I'd venture to say I'd favor him in all.

Liston and Holmes start off in a jab-war, which is initially favoring Holmes for his quickness and agility, but soon starts favoring Liston by the 3rd round because he hits harder and Holmes starts becoming less mobile. Liston then attacks Holmes' body to take Larry's legs away by the 7th, forcing him back into a close-quarters fight, in which Liston ultimately drops Holmes twice before finally stopping him in the 9th.

Hagler on a tight decision. He'd struggle quite a bit with Jones' skittish approach & natural speed factor, but Jones doesn't land anything to really keep Hagler from coming on, & probably didn't peak as a fighting force until Super-Middle. Not a great thing against one of the best 160lbers of all-time.

I'd favor the bigger, but equally skilled Hopkins to maul his way to an ugly decision here. Cut and paste every other Hopkins fight, to put it briefly.

And now, the most hotly debated matchup on the C/S at the moment....

Joe Louis KO6.
Louis struggles to get in range at first, losing the first 2/3 rounds before gradually getting inside Wlad's jab and landing some big shots, knocking him down twice in the 4th. Wlad spoils and holds in the 5th but is finally stopped for a 10 count in the 6th by a Louis left hook.

Duran starts fast, controlling the early and middle rounds with superior boxing and movement, picking Chavez apart. Chavez pushes forward, taking sometimes 2 and 3 punches to land 1, slowly wearing Duran down. The later rounds are controlled by Chavez, with tireless body work, and dogged aggresion, and Duran is on fumes as the final bell sounds. Roberto barely has the energy to raise his hands in victory as the cards reveal he has won a SD.

Shaq puts Wilt the Stilt out in under 2 rounds. Head punches from a 7'1 350 lb man prove too much.

Ray Mercer vs David Tua (primes for both)
