I dont get that myself. I agree that he seems immature but he also just seems like he really struggles with self esteem/self confidence and comes across as quite sensitive and it showed post fight.TheCobra wrote:Yep, it was pretty immature, could you imagine Bundu doing the same? Bundu oozed class and maturity in the build-up and post-fight interviews, even when Wank Warren was being fairly disrespectful to him in his post-fight comments.TheLeprechaun wrote:That was a poor show from Gavin at the end. Gavin has always had that element of the spoilt child who never grew up about him, he clearly has so much boxing ability, but he just hasn't manned up, mentally or physically. Nowhere near enough power in there tonight, it was all pitter patter stuff, which is only ever gona get you so far when you go up the levels in the pro game.

No, as ridiculous as McDonald is, he is far more talented than Burdis.columbo wrote:John Mcdonald is just as bad if not worse.
Michael Pass is far better than both.

I'v always worried how a WWF style triple threat match between Carl Froch, Kell Brook and Paul Smith would play out with MC John McDonald as the MC.columbo wrote:John Mcdonald is just as bad if not worse.black panther wrote:We say this after every bill he mcs on. I guess the classiest most mature people know how to win and know how to lose. Best thing he could have done would be stick around, congratulate Bundu on a close fight and express his interest in the rematch. Storming out of the place never looks good.

Na i get what you mean. I dont think he was being intentionally disrespecful though. I just think he was really upset and wasnt thinking straight and just acted on his initial impulse.TheCobra wrote:I guess the classiest most mature people know how to win and know how to lose. I would rather that then a Froch type of classless speech that goes on for 10 minutes like after the first Groves fight, as the song goes "you say it best when you say nothing at all".TheCobra wrote:I guess the classiest most mature people know how to win and know how to lose. Re: Gavin vs Bundu
Beating Frankie Gavin does not a world title contender make. All that's happened here is Gavin got slightly found out, it doesn't make Bundu a world beater - though he is a very good fighter.

Seriously though, disappointed for Gavin but I think we all knew his lack of power would probably be the thing that let him down, he's never really been able to shake off the amateur style.

Did Woodhall not give an interview and say "I lost, not sure what the judges were watching"? That's classy. Running because you lost isn't classy. Sulking before you know the cards isn't classy. In fact Gavin's career has been pretty unclassy throughout.TheCobra wrote:I guess the classiest most mature people know how to win and know how to lose. Re: Gavin vs Bundu
Thought it was a close fight.... After the KD and the following round, Bundu really wasn't landing as often as it appeared, Gavin looked like he was sagging on the ropes, but Bundu really didn't capitalise and was missing plenty. I thought Gavin dug deep after the KD, but to be honest I didn't think either guy was all that effective in the final third of the fight.
Frankie is from my neck of the woods and I've been following him since his amateur days and always hoped he would achieve, but I think even with a bit of an ill timed step up in class, we found his level tonight. I've always felt like there was an underlying sense of entitlement with Frankie and with all that talent, he really hasn't realised his potential.... I'm not going to criticise him too much, because I think there are probably plenty of emotional issues that come into play, but I think when all is said and done, he is going to have a very hard time recovering from that loss tonight. I don't see Frankie as one of those guys that will bounce back and come back stronger, though I truly hope I'm wrong. Whether you like him or hate him or think he is/ was overrated, he has bags of talent and it would be a shame if tonight is the best we see of Frankie.

I see Brook as being similar to Gavin. On an emotional level I mean. Brook is clearly a more proven operator but I feel that he also gets quite downbeat when things arent going his way or nerves get the better of him somewhat. That could be his undoing against Porter even.CheckHook wrote:Thought it was a close fight.... Re: Gavin vs Bundu
He could fight Bradley Skeete for the WBA Inter Continental, Charles Manyuchi for the WBC International or Bethuel Ushona for WBO Africa. Plus he could defend his Commonwealth title in those fights. I think the only way he gets a title shot is if Brook wins.digzee wrote: Even if he loses to Porter it would be a great comeback fight as Bundu is highly ranked amongst most governing bodies, I do hope Bundu gets a title shot but the division is so strong and he doesn't offer much to the other champions, he needs to get into a final eliminator for the opportunity I think.

Good post. You get the feeling from Gavin that he's "soft" mentally and a bit immature, in terms of taking responsibility for things like missing weight for example. At times in his interviews he is very honest, usually in post fight interviews. You get the feeling he will struggle to get over this loss. He may feel that he won but he has to accept that it was very close and he was very close to being stopped and this is European level. He was in with Bundu, not Maidana. I mean, we've got people like Matthysse, Thurman, Bradley etc all in this division. Imaging Frankie in there with Matthysse for example just feels wrong. It's one thing being a world class amateur, but it's quite another being a world class pro. He couldn't have picked a worse division to compete in.
Re: Gavin vs Bundu
The most notable things for me were (1) how badly Gavin did against the ropes, getting the worst virtually every time he was there and not showing much ability to consistently fight back and defend effectively in those spots and (2) how little his shots had on them, never visibly fazing Bundu and allowing to march forward without much worry.
At times Frankie showed the good middle of the ring boxing skills that made him a world class amateur, but he also clearly showed his limitations as professional boxer. I can see him winning an EBU title but he'll need to get significantly better to have a decent chance of going further in this division. Currently I think the other top Brits, Brook and Khan, beat him handily.

Having just read Jimmy Tibbs book, he (Jimmy) spends weeks and weeks getting amateur stars out of their amateur habits. So what did Gavin do? F uck them off and go back to his old amateur trainer who he'd had all the success with. They were never going to change, I think with hindsight they thought he'd out point anyone. Hopefully lessons are learned, and there are positives, massive heart and at least he's had a war now, the rest of the fights were pretty straightforward. And I hold my hands up as a massive Gavin fan who has fought his corner on here for years. Got to try and get to 10st though, he just couldn't deter him at all.

Re: Gavin vs Bundu
Anyone else draw a slight comparison to David Price v Tony Thompson? A fighter with good solid amateur roots, cleaning up the domestic division, being over-hyped by management and fans - only to jump up to lower world level too soon.
Bundu clearly 'knew' too much for Frankie. I only had Bundu by 2 points though, so at least Gavin didn't get KO'd and actually got up and fought through it.
Gavin can come again and learn from this but winning a world title in the WW division looks a very, very big ask now. Maybe Bundu will go on to get a big fight, win it and look great, in which case, defeat here for Gavin might not look that bad.

Yes wood hall did do that after his fight with Glenn Catley Richie was embarrassed by the scoring and it was refreshing to hear his honesty after the fight the man showed real class but having said that Richie was and still is one of the games gentlemen a real top man

I think the key word here is AMETEUR , Its the way the ameteurs have been taught for so long now , where its drummed into them , light scoring punch move away , in , out , weave it all about , Don't take a chance, 1 punch,1 point and away,
When they move to the pay for punch its so different , and i tink a lot struggle with it ,, whereass , you have your rough tuff don't give a fack sort of guy who only wants to throw punches that hurt ,, ,,, Well they take to the pro's a lot better .

In fairness. Kell seems to have kept it together much better with all the messing about he has had with the Porter date. Watched porters last few I actually don't think there is as big a gap in quality as people suggest I do think Kell having to travel will be his downfall in Sheffield it would improve his chances a lot IMO.columbo wrote:I see Brook as being similar to Gavin. I also do think Bundu is clearly better than anyone Kell has faced so far.

Frankie's post fight interview with IFL

Well done to Frankie for getting up from that body shot, digging in and getting back to a position where he won the closing rounds - he showed a real fighters heart.
Agree with most that when he was on the ropes Bundu scored well but when mid ring Frankie's boxing was at times sublime.
I had it very close but think Bundu deserved the decision especially given the fact he landed that crippling body shot.
Frankie can come again

Maybe, but this is the last of that generation. The amateur fights now are basically 3 round pro fights. In fact the refs have been more lenient than most pro refs.coneye wrote:I think the key word here is AMETEUR , Its the way the ameteurs have been taught for so long now , where its drummed into them , light scoring punch move away , in , out , weave it all about , Don't take a chance, 1 punch,1 point and away,

Great fight.
Never thought Frankie would get up from that shot. His mind was all there but his legs and body seem to have gone. But to get through that and win 2 of the last 3 rounds on my card. That sort of KD stays with you for the whole fight.
I think Frankie learned a lot. Lost by a whisker when a stoppage looked certain. He won't be happy with defeat but that was a fight that will serve him well in the future...far better than a knock-over job.
