Contrary to popular belief, Tony Bellew’s nickname isn’t actually a reference to the Manchester Arena bombing after an Ariana Grande concert.
I saw this thread title and immediately came up with this joke and I was really, really proud of myself....
I must've read it on here the first time and remembered it. No way could I make a post as funny as this.

The biggest myth must be the one that every "die hard" fan keeps on repeating that if you've boxed in the centuries before our time you are automatically better than the guys of our times. I mean it's absolutely embarrassing.

good point. And even any era before the current was somehow magical. Absolute tripe usually spouted with zero real knowledge but rose tinted gogs.

Agreed with the HW guys where they've just become bigger due to sports science (whether legal or not) and the fighters who have gone through the weight classes for similar reasons.
I'm the antithesis of a rose coloured spectacle fan, but I'd love to hear a detailed analysis of any current figher that could beat:
1. Hagler at. Middleweight
2. RJJ at Light Heavy
3. Ricardo Lopez at Straw weight
4. Duran at Lightweight.

jack johnson won his hw title vs a 5'7 167 pound opponent - and that's a fight day weight with no draining, so presumably could cut more like to 154 today
very ddiff times indeed

When you say current fighters, are you rating their abilities as of today?

Crawford and Inoue are clearly on course to be all time greats.
So you're taking Hagler et al in the absolute pomp?

Beterbiev beats RJJ at LH imo, not exactly a detailed analysis but he's too accurate and heavy handed for Jones to handle.

Think Prime RJJ
Prime mind you
Toys with him and that’s a prime Beterbiev.

I'd fancy RJJ too, just toyed with some top fighters

Yes being accurate agains the likes of Yarde and Smith is one thing, against RJJ it’s quite a different matter.
It’s not like RJJ is going to run out of cardio down the stretch either.

RJJ didn't fight the other stand out LHW of his time, Dariusz Michalczewski.

by the same token i find the idea that boxers who fight a maximum 3 times a year could be as skilled and have the ringcraft as those who fought 12 times a year, to be fanciful
if you think a bit of HGH or test makes up for the huge comparative lack of ring experience, good for you
in say tennis, the idea that Federer or Nadal could compete with their own peers 3 or 4 times less often than their equivalents thirty years ago, and actually be as good as people playing 3-4 times more games, also strikes me as fanciful

It was a fight that should certainly have happened, although I can't imagine RJJ would have been anything other than a sizeable favourite.

My money would be on Dariusz, a very underrated boxer. If he was American, he'd be in the IBHOF.

do we know why? It doesn't look like Dariusz travelled, all fights in Germany except one in Portugal and one in his country of birth. And Roy never did, perhaps understandable after the debacle of '88.
Funniest thing I've read about Dariusz is that Mark Wahlberg wrote a song about him when he was in Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. High praise indeed.

Roy said he didn't think he'd get a fair shake in Germany and I think Dariusz thought the same about the US, although I have never heard that. Plus, I don't think the numbers would add up. Michalczewski was earning a lot in Germany, but he was pretty much unheard of in the states. If the fight was in Vegas it would likely make a similar amount of money to one of Roy's other defences. The only way I could see it happening would been a huge stadium fight in Germany, but at a time for US fans. Either way, we'll never know.

Indeed. Was Dariusz very good? I know the name well but never seen him fight.

Good but RJJ levels above
Woods would have been a good matchup for DM
