as i said in another thread, i dont get the tommy fury thing either. pretty much no one in the usa cares about him, and as poopy as he is he at least has a bit of a boxing background

paul can fight bigger drawing opponents who are less experienced. popular youtubers, big name washed up mma guys, etc. could fight big name boxers in exhibitions too even

he didnt even know fury's name and thought he was called timmy

So what’s the story. Are these MMA guys that bad at boxing or is Jake Paul a lot better than expected ??

I said a few fights ago that I thought Tommy could get to British title level. I don’t believe that now. Although I didn’t think Tyson would be the number 1 heavyweight in the world after I had him losing the first McDermott fight or after he punched himself in the face.

Re: the Timmy thing, I think that’s just Jake’s sense of humour to try and wind Tommy up.

jake has been expected to beat all of them......he trains full time with top pro teams, spars good pros. basically has the dream setup and thus can make serious gains despite not having an amateur career etc.

vastly better than the typical 'celeb boxing' participant and can throw shots properly............though obviously winning a split over an 0-0 mma fighter shows the limitations too

Could have been a good promo but someone ruined it from the start and then the security thought they’re big fish.

Tommy and Jake were actually trying to de-escalate the situation.

Am I being too suspicious in noting that the judge who scored it for Woodley has had his name written in above another one scribbled out, kind of as if he came in at the last moment and hadn't been properly briefed?

When I say "briefed", sometimes my keyboard types "ef" instead of "b".

Didnt watch it but simple but effective match making again. Askren and Woodley two of the easiest but biggest names within MMA possible.

Never seen a guy look so athletic and have the alleged bloodline, money and access to top level training look so pants. It’s shameful. No wonder he’s chasing Jake Paul, he’s not getting another decent payday in boxing.

Even in MMA Woodley was known to stand off and posture more than punch. He’s been a champion but IMO one of the worst. His activity level has been poor in most of his fights. He should be ashamed of his performance in that one. Beaten off a Disney child star

Tommy Fury has a really unusual physique, his shoulders almost look fake they are so big compared to the rest of his body. Despite this I don't reckon his shoulders and chest will be that strong, it's almost completely cosmetic and just for looks. David Haye had, and to an extent still has that kind of physique but he obviously used to bowl people over.

Paul's slightly better than expected but has 4-round stamina (at best!), and against anyone decent he'll get floored when he brings his feet together in range, because his righthand's his only threat. Yarde has the same problem, where he visibly drags his rear foot in such a way that his opponents know they might beat him to the big right before he can set, but he also has a dangerous left and way more skill than Paul. Arthur rarely threw when Yarde was set, and just timed him with his jab when he wasn't.

UFC guys are bad at boxing (at least to date) because they're unoptimised for it. The talent might be there in some of them, but it takes a lot of time to get used to kicks not coming, and to then learn to use those previously dangerous angles to get around punches better. I think Woodley should've just waited for Paul to throw and countered, since they both backed up in straight lines when the other threw. Stalemate.

Advanced skills will probably always be beyond UFC vets. I rewatched Haye-Maccarinelli recently and saw Enzo make a schoolboy error at one point, and he was bloody good at boxing! Experienced.

At 9:17. Turned out he had a fair old reach handicap so always had to close the gap; had to carry that extra risk of initiating. Haye slipped and countered that jab on prediction as much as reaction.

Notice how Enzo stepped back after his jab fell short just before, and then telegraphed a more committed approach in apparent frustration. He was trying so hard to ensure his second attempt at least made contact, and had he thrown anything else it might've been a genius feint.

Paul can be drawn into that mistake all day long, and this is a great example of it because of the camera angle where you can see Mac's giveaway expression. Slip like Haye or throw a check hook; either way he's going down against a puncher. And it doesn't matter if they're old, so long as they still have a bit of timing left.

But we know how it goes: Fury next and then a big faded name, and the longer it goes the more money he'll bring, increasing the chances of fixing.

Fury got paid $722k?! For a four rounder? And Baranchyk got 90 grand?

Come one surely they didn't need to pay Tommy that much to get him on the bill... 50k would've been paying way over the top. What has Tommy earned before per fight 5k max?

Just seen it now.

Paul doesn't have the stamina for eight rounders but he was OK, he won the fight convincingly enough, Woodley didn't do enough.

Paul isn't without skill but I don't think he is going far with it. He could beat Fury though.

Crazy money. Frank may have played a blinder here telling Jake and co that Fury/Dubois would help generate big time PPV numbers in the U.K.

Baranchyk and Love deserved more money, than Joke Paul, Woodley, Tommy Fury and DDD. These two provided a real fight in contrast to the others.
