Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli make weight for WBC super-middleweight world championship fight in Riyadh

Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli both made the weight for their WBC super-middleweight world title fight on Saturday in Riyadh.

Canelo was 167.6lb with Mbilli a fraction heavier at 167.8lb.

Alvarez is looking to win back one of the world titles he used to hold in his first fight since his stunning loss to Terence Crawford last year.

When Crawford retired it left the four major world championships vacant and Mbilli became the WBC titlist.

"I'm the challenger now, but in my mind I've always been the champion, ever since I was a little kid," Canelo said.

He elected to go straight in with Mbilli, a high-calibre, tough, aggressive fighter, right off the back of that defeat.

"I don't believe in shortcuts. I want to become a world champion again, and that's why I want to face the best. Mbilli is the world champion," Canelo said.

Mbilli, unbeaten with only one draw in his 30-fight professional career, declared: "I have a lot of respect for Canelo and his career, and I congratulate him on everything he has achieved. But inside the ring, it will be a different story, and I'm coming to win.

"I'm ready to shock the world."

The event in Riyadh is going ahead amid escalating conflict in the region.

Houthi attacks have targeted Saudi airports, including Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, while security concerns have led to the postponement or cancellation of other sporting events in the kingdom.

"You know, fighting in Saudi for me is special and whatever it takes I'm going to be a world champion again," Canelo has said.

"Because I'm a fighter and I want to achieve a lot of things in boxing yet and that motivates myself. I love boxing."

Canelo makes weight against backdrop of Saudi turmoil

Christian Mbilli and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez made weight for their world title bout in Riyadh just 24 hours after two ballistic missiles were intercepted over the Saudi Arabian capital.

Mbilli, 31, was elevated to WBC super-middleweight champion in January and makes his first defence against Mexico's Alvarez, 36, on Saturday.

Both fighters tipped the scales at 12st (76kg) before engaging in a tense but respectful face-off.

Alvarez, who will step into the ring for the 69th time on Saturday, made his professional debut almost exactly 21 years ago on 29 October 2005.

"This is very important for me, I've been doing this for 21 years and won my first world title 16 years ago. It's important for me to win a title again," Alvarez said.

"My experience is different, he hasn't faced anyone like me and I'll teach him tomorrow."

Doubts have been raised in recent weeks about whether the event can take place safely due to the growing conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi movement.

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all but essential travel to the whole of Saudi Arabia.

On Thursday, Saudi Press Agency reported the Civil Defence had intercepted two ballistic missiles over Riyadh. A civilian sustained a minor injury and there was damage to a house and vehicle due to falling shrapnel.

Earlier in October, a missile strike on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport killed 13 people and wounded more than 300.

Travel arrangements for those attending Saturday's bout have been complicated by restricted access to the airport.

While other sporting events in Saudi Arabia - including The Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition, the final round of the 2026 World Rally Championship and the 2026 Urban Cycling World Championships - have been cancelled the combat sports world has not followed suit.

Friday's weigh-in began with a performance from a Mariachi band, with the card billed as Mexico v the world.

Four-weight world champion Alvarez is fighting for the first time since losing to Terence Crawford in September 2025.

Saturday will be the first time Alvarez has entered a bout without a world title to his name since 2015.

Cameroon-born Mbilli, who trains in Canada, is yet to lose in 30 fights as a professional, winning 29 and drawing one, with 24 of those victories coming by stoppage.

"Tomorrow night I will beat him in every way. I have the best condition and technique," Mbilli said.

"A win would change my life a lot. It will be a fight of the year."

Meanwhile, Mexico's Jaime Munguia defends the WBA super-middleweight title against Nikita Zon in the co-main, and compatriot Rafael Espinoza puts his WBO featherweight belt on the line against Ricardo Blandon.

But Mexican Lindolfo Delgado withdrew from his bout against Russian-Canadian Artur Biyarslanov for the vacant IBF light-welterweight title earlier this week.

Canelo Alvarez looks to have made the weight really well 'at least that is how it appears on the scales'.

Note: I personally thought he appeared weight drained vs. Terrence Crawford 'and I would have proffered him to move back up to 175 pounds. As I believe all of his biggest fights are above 168 pounds'.

But nevertheless, if his ambitions are to become Undisputed again 'the path to achieve that feat may be easier in the Super Middle Weight Division' etc.
