Gil, does this spate of Spoon cards mean that my man is in line for the revised ranking treatment?

Yes indeed. I'm closing in on getting all of his fights watched. I just kinda bounce around from fighter to fighter, but when I realize that I'm getting close to having seen everything on a guy I try to just wrap it up.

That is perfect in that you can watch the brutal fight between Witherspoon and Tubbs now for the WBA title in January of ‘86 now.

Saw it already. Didn't think it was a "brutal" or especially exciting fight really, but it was alright. Witherspoon edged it.

I thought that it was just a brutal, savage war. I am not sure that I would call it particularly exciting. Just brutal.
I have still never seen this fight. I know that Marquez won by decision though.
Do yourself a favour and watch the fight. It's brilliant on a technical level.
I will make sure to check it out.

Tim Witherspoon vs Jose Ribalta
I'll save myself the trouble of typing it all out, and just say, it's all Spoon. 100-90. He winds up giving Ribalta a makeover by moving his nose a few inches over to the other side of his face.
As for a tighter and more interesting Witherspoon fight we have
Witherspoon seemed gassed over most of the 2nd half of the bout with Snipes.

I will have to check out the Witherspoon-Snipes fight at some point.
I just went over my parents house and showed my father Pacquaio-Horn. That is another fight which Witherspoon can watch and score.

It was a close fight.
Snipes was a guy who at times was pretty good. He and Carl Williams were in the same level as the WBS champions like Witherspoon, Tubbs, Coetzee, Page etc. of the era. However, they are largely forgotton because they never got a WBS title.

Yeah even their accomplishments are comparable. Williams I feel like had a few more big moments than Snipes, but they're both definitely some of the more notable fringe contenders of the era. James "Quick" Tillis would probably be the next notch below them.

Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Meldrick Taylor I (3-17-1990)
R1: 10-9 Taylor
R2: 10-9 Taylor
R3: 10-9 Taylor
R4: 10-9 Taylor
R5: 10-9 Taylor
R6: 10-9 Taylor
R7: 10-9 Taylor
R8: 10-9 Taylor
R9: 10-9 Taylor
R10: 10-9 Chavez
R11: 10-9 Taylor
R12: Chavez wins by TKO
I am not sure what else to say which hasn’t already been said a million times. I know that it has become fashionable to defend the stoppage, but while I recognize that the wheels were coming off down the stretch for Taylor, I will just never agree with the stoppage.

Perfectly good stoppage. Richard Steele asked Taylor if he wanted to continue, but he didn't answer and kept his arm on the ropes. No one would have said a word if it was Chavez who was way ahead and it had the same ending.

Hey,
I think that that interpretation of what happened is not quite accurate actually. If you watch closely it is very clear that while Steele did, as a natural matter of course, ask Taylor whether he was alright immediately after Taylor had pulled himself up, he did not provide him with an opportunity to answer and simply called off the fight as that was not the central reason behind the stoppage. Steele clearly states this in the post fight interview, as well, that the reason behind the stoppage was not the inability to answer, it was the general condition of the fighter. The interview with Steele commences at around the 1:16.50 mark. Steele first answers by stating that Taylor had taken many good, clean shots and that it was time for the fight to be stopped. He was then asked whether he had asked Taylor a question which he failed to answer, to which Steele states that he had asked Taylor whether he was alright and had received no answer, but that looking at the condition of the fighter was the main reason why he had stopped the fight.
So, I think that the standard narrative to the effect that Steele stopped the fight due to Taylor failing to respond to him is not really consistent with the available record. Now, I would agree that Taylor was in rough shape at that point, but that doesn’t mean that he was not going to be capable of defending himself. He had been in rough shape for the entire round (really his condition was gradually worsening over several rounds) and regardless the fight was essentially over, just not in the way that Richard Steele determined.
I just don’t think that it was a good or just stoppage at all.

One thing rarely mentioned when discussing JCC vs Meldrick 1 is the fact that Meldrick was a recipient of a slow count. At the time Steele makes his decision, it is already 12 seconds from the moment he hit the canvas. At 9-count he was staring totally blank-eyed AND Chavez would still have had 5 seconds to hurt a defenseless guy worse (not 2 seconds).
Right call.

Taylor had pulled himself up. He was a champion. He deserved the right to finish the last few seconds of the fight in which very little, if anything, was going to happen.
The fight which I really want to see is Canelo vs. Crawford. What an astounding accomplishment from Crawford. It is not available in full yet on YouTube though.

Probably never will be. That one is on Netflix. I'd imagine them and Paramount + will keep a tighter grip on their stuff. At least until it's at least 5 years old.
Canelo vs Crawford was a very tactical chess match. Crawford earned his win though.

It is an amazing accomplishment from Crawford to have moved up that much in weight and to have accomplished what he did.

He's the only guy that ever did it.
Lightweight Champion to Super Middleweight Champion is a list that's 1 name long.

Crawford was absolutely incredible. I just watched his fight with Horn for the first time several weeks ago. The guy was astounding.
Like a lot of his fights it starts off somewhat close and competitive, and as it goes along Canelo starts beating the sh*t out of his opponent with greater and greater regularity, and the damage adds up.
