I got my book today. I checked it out briefly and will get to it in due time. The first thing I did was go to page 139, with Frank and the boys. You and the boys belong in that book Frank. I'm glad to see you included. The book seems to be a tailor made companion for this thread. I can't wait to really get into it.

We went to this year round school schedule this year so I went back to work last week. Each year my U.S. history class seams more like ancient history in relation to the kids. I'm not talking about the Pilgrims. I'm talking about what happened last year.

To get an idea where they're coming from,I asked each class(total of 180 kids)who is the Vice President of the United States. O for 180. Not one kid knew or seemed to care. I was going to ask them about Walter Cronkite,but I didn't want to make them comatose.

Five years ago if I mentioned Cesar Chavez,the Mexican kids thought I was talking about Julio Cesar Chavez. Now they don't even know who Oscar De La Hoya is. Before showing a documentary of Pancho Villa ,I asked if anyone in the class knew anything about him. (Remember my classes are 90% Mexican,Mexican/American).One kid said he thought Pancho Villa had a shotgun. Another kid said he thought Pancho Villa owned Pancho's Taco Shops.

But maybe I shouldn't have asked them who was Pancho Villa. It is a U.S. history class. Tomorrow I'll ask them who was George Washington. I'll bet some kid will say he's the dude on the dollar bill.

I bought the book last year. Great stuff on the people who were the heart and soul of boxing in the Southland. Answered a lot of questions I had about boxing during the era.

Roger Mayweather arrested!

Top trainer Roger Mayweather, uncle of Floyd Mayweather, has been arrested and charged with coercion with force and battery strangulation. Las Vegas Metro Police arrested Mayweather on Sunday after the top trainer and former fighter attacked one of his former boxers, Melissa St. Vil.

St. Vil had just gotten back to Las Vegas from Las Cruces, N.M., where she had scored an upset win over local favorite Jennifer Han. St. Vil had been training under Mayweather until about three months ago, when she changed camps. According to the Metro police report, she terminated her agreement with Roger because he had been harassing and following her around.

On Sunday, he showed up at her apartment. St. Vil says Mayweather hit her several times in the ribs, then tried to strangle her. When police arrived, she was coughing and spitting blood. Mayweather was arrested and is facing serious charges.

I bought two but I'm going to order a few more too. You're right Rick, this book is definitely worth sharing.

There's a photo with Alexis Arguello and trainers Phil Silvers and Bob Armstrong. I knew Armstrong quite well. It was Mel Epstein that got Bob into training fighters. Back in 1975 Bob came to Mel and asked him for help. I don't know too much about Bob before that time. My friend Sergio Billings was Bob's first fighter but after a short time training Sergio decided that boxing wasn't for him.

I called Bob when I got the news about Mel's passing. The first words that came from him were "Well, I guess all of Mel's Ring Record Books belong to me now". He had been keeping Mel's books for him.

There is also a real nice shot of Larry Soto and Felipe Canela. Brings back some memories.
