Groves would be at around 700 points, just a bit higher than Froch.
Normal points win would see Grove behind Froch. So he would be set just a bit above the mean of the old ratings before the bout - and Froch a bit lower.

I see him at 994. Still odd.

Froch had a rating of 1042 points after his win on 2013-11-23.
But his best opponent Lucian Bute with 879 points before their bout on 2012-05-26 got out of scope after 18 months on 2013-11-26.
Now his best opponent is Mikkel Kessler with only 473 points before their bout.
This was somewhat less than the required 50% of his own rating. So Froch lost some points.

but its not frochs fault that bute has notbeen fighting (or maybe it is). this way froch is penalised points due to another pesons inactivity.
also i saw solis vs leif larsen previosuly.
why when solis won by UD he lost points and larsen won points.

The opponents are measured by their rating before the bout. And the boxer taking the opponent is responsible for choosing him.
So Froch was penalised for not choosing required quality opponents within the last 18 months.
Regarding Solis:
Solis lost points due to a relatively close decision on points and due to his superior rating before the bout.

ty for that
Out of interest...
Whats the highest points value that a fighter has had (so highest value during career)
and whats the biggest points gain that a fighter has had from a fight? I'm sure that second one has been answered before but I couldn't see anything through a search

Not the case. Bute's subsequent fights do not impact Frochs points, indeed they arent talking about Butes subsequent 18 months, but Frochs.
The point decrease is down to the fact that in the last 18 months he hasnt fought as good a standard of opponent (according to the database) to replace Bute, who drops out of the calculation, as we see, just after the Groves fight.
Nothing to do with Butes fights subsequently, everything to do with Froch not keeping (according to the database) to the same standard of opponent

maybe kessler and groves didnt have as much points as bute did. but surely the calibre of the fighters and their ranking on boxrec should also be taken into account. groves and kessler were top 5 opponents on boxrec.

Boxrec doesn't take into account rankings, but the point ratings only.

Is there a way of finding out what the top ten heavyweights looked like the day after Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson?

His rtotal has dropped from the last post-fight total but Arreola (et al) haven't overhauled it. He'll drop off the ratings altogether in March if he doesn't fight since then. It's more the fault of the rest of the division for not being able to put together enough meaningful fights to overtake him,

Anybody know why Ukrainian cruiser Roman Golovashchenko hasn't a rating. He fought a little over a month ago beating heavyweight Yakup Saglam. Presumably he's retired?

His record is set to complete.

Boxrec had Szpilka rated #33 and Jennings 31. So how did they bump Jennings all the way up to #13 by beating a #33 guy?
