Nikolai Valuev ve Evander Holyfield



Valuev beats Holyfield by controversial MD to retain his World Heavyweight title, disgraceful decision, I'd have been pushed to give him 3 rounds he was dreadful, slow, plodding and just followed Holyfield around the ring, never cut the ring off, rarely let his hands go and when he did they were slow arm punches, Holyfield boxed well his lateral movement was excellent in all fairness, ,caught Valuev with some nice left hooks and later some big rights, he also showed some glimpses of his bursts of old, clear winner for me but the giant Valuev got thr nod somehow

I've always disagreed that it was a robbery, Holy threw next to no punches after a positive start where he won the clearest rounds of the fight. It was basically his nothing vs Valuev's air jabbing, I can see how big tall Nik got it

It's one of the only fights I've rewatched to do my own punch stats on, as the usa commentators kept going on about Valuev throwing nothing and how you cant win not punching, but I was convinced he was significantly outworking Holy. Turns out he was, pretty much every round, especially the more it went

It does make you appreciate how easy Holy would've beat him at another time though, he still had the speed and skill to do it, but just lacked the energy (which he used to have tons of)

I though Valuev was dreadful TBH, he did improve down stretch i suppose but maybe 3/4 rounds was all I'd give him, i wouldn't say Holyfield totally out worked him as he fought sporadically himself but I thought he was a lot more measured, cant remember Valuev landing anything of note apart from maybe literally 2 decent punches,

Evander Holyfield vs Brian Nielsen



Holyfield stops Nielsen in thr 10th round of a non title Heavyweight fight,.last fight of Holyfield's career, a bit of controversy about the ending as there were a few rabbit punches in there, both guys were ancient Nielsen looked obese but TBF he probably wasnt juiced to the gils, he actually had a decent 1st round, got on the jab and landed a couple rights but that was about as good as it got for him


Holyfield had him down in the 3rd, cracking knockdown, doubled up left hook to body then head, bell probably saved Nielsen, after that it was a methodical beatdown from Holyfield, Nielsen only had his toughness to show in there which was impressive, a few times Holyfield opened him up and he shouldve went down

Holyfield was a mile in front and in the 10th he trapped Neilson in the corner, repeatedly stuck the jab on his face and landed rights through the middle and hooks around the side, a few clubbing rights had Neilsen taking a knee but the ref stepped in at that moment to stop it, Neilsen was livid and he was right that a fair few of they clubbing rights were around the back of the head

Larry Holmes vs Earnie Shavers II

My takaways:

1 - Holmes was super hurt in the seventh. I remember the knockdown, but didn't remember how hurt Holmes was for the duration of the round.

2 - Holmes was crisp and at his best for that fight. His movement was superb and he was sitting down on his right hand after the first several rounds. He really devastated Shavers with his uppercut.

3 - Davey Pearl wasn't at his best. Seemed to lose track of the fight at times and made some questionable calls.

Really enjoyed it.

Lloyd Honeyghan vs Sylvester Mittee



Honeyghan stops Mittee on a cut eye in the 8th to retain his British and European Welterweight titles and add the Commonwealth strap, great tussle, Honeyghan scored a couple of flash knockdowns along the way, both men started off fast looking to get in the driving seat, not many jabs thrown by either man as both went hammer and tongs at each other, some great exchanges


Honeyghan just had that look to be a bit better and his punches had more of an effect than Mittee's had on him, Honeyghan had Mittee touching down in the 2nd from a left hook which had Mittee losing his balance, Mittee was down momentarily again in the 6th from a right, again he was right up and it looked more balance, still Honeyghan was looking the better man in control even though Mittee fought tooth and nail all the way, in the 8th the ref called the doc to inspect Mittee's eye and immediately stopped it, great all action fight

Lloyd Honeyghan vs Sylvester Mittee

Good seasoning fight for the Ragamuffin Man....and proof that taking the "classic" British-European title route was not without its benefits back in the day. And especially with a good domestic rival and some bragging rights on the line.

Lloyd Honeyghan vs Johnny Bumphus



Honeyghan blows away Bumphus in 2 rounds to retain his World Welterweight titles, bizarre type of fight, Honeyghan was out like a man possessed, was landing bombs from the off, Bumphus tried to hang with him but was shipping some big shots, Honeyghan dropped him with a right hand in the corner, Bumphus held in for dear life and only just made the bell

Right at the start of the 2nd Honeyghan literally sprinted across the ring and clocked Bumphus with a left hook dropping him but nobody else was ready and Bumphus trainer Lou Duva was still in the ring and lost his sh1t when Bumphus went down, Honeyghan was docked a point, no matter as he immediately opened Bumphus up on the ropes, landing big shots from both hands and knocking Bumphus down and through the ropes where it was stopped, bit of a farce really

Watched a lot of wright fights recently too

Vargas is a very good fight he seemed to win close but lost

Mosley 1 he won fairly easily

Mosley 2 was way up until he dropped his hands and disaster nearly ensued

Trinidad was a wipeout

Taylor is a great back and forth close fight

I always found him in good fights. Never found him boring despite not being a puncher

I thought he lost Vargas close, was a bit of a boring powerless fighter to me though obviously skilled

Some powerless guys are boring... but wright always came forward and didnt clinch... and his jab was great

Some guys have zero rewatchability. . Andre ward comes to mind. Great fighter but that grappling style is awful to watch

Starling stops Honeyghan in 9 to become World Welterweight champion, another exciting fight and a great performance from Starling, he just looked the boss from the beginning, it was a fast start from both men who looked to exchange, Honeyghan struggled to land clean early though and Starling tucked up and blocked a lot of his work before countering with sharp left hooks and right hands, he was able to ride a lot of Honeyghan's bombs and suck it up

Starling landed slick combinations and the speed bothered Honeyghan who always kept ploughing forward, Honeyghan switched lefty in the 5th and probably had his best round but he was back righty in the 6th and by now Starling really started to get on top and you sensed Honeyghan might be ready to go, next few rounds Starling was in full flow ripping combinations in and backing Honeyghan up, finally he dropped Honeyghan with a burst in the 9th, Honeyghan collapsed to canvas more exhausted than anything, he got up and Starling straight away him in corner and was just beginning to unload when ref stepped in, might have been a touch early for my liking, the writing looked om the wall but you could never write off someone like Honeyghan, again though excellent stuff from Starling

hadn't seen Starling for years until for some reason I came across the Simon Brown fight a few months back and watched that. it was interesting, Brown was slightly green at the time and Starling just walked him down, Brown was throwing a lot but couldn't penetrate Starling's defence at all (which is how I recollect the Honeyghan fight going) and was really tiring out.

Joe Frazier- George Foreman.

Probably Foreman’s best win. He walks through an unbeaten Joe Frazier. Even his cuffing blows effect Smokin Joe.

Joe Frazier- Buster Mathis.

The quality of the fight I found was great. Felt like I was ringside.
Frazier boxed well. His left hook is probably my favourite punch in Boxing.

Mathis boxed well. He was huge for the day and gave the slow starter Frazier some trouble early doors.

I liked Wright too and think he is underrated.

both , both good fights funny remember sitting on the train after getting of site reading about winky v sugar ,also Jermain Taylor he was a dangerous fighter ,Paul Williams,Peter Quillin i enjoyed most of his fight he was a right handed southpaw i think

how Kelly Pavlik surived that ko down i dont know, also think kelly tryed to show boat in the flurry that got him put down. taylor was a mean fighter and went hell for leather early ,and blew his load and couldnt put kelly away , then when pavlik sparked taylor he werent getting up again even after 2o
