I remember this kid running and jumping around all over the place with other kids when I was trying to make matchs, the kids could play together and have fun outside the ring, but once a match was made and they were inside the ring it was all business, and may the better kid win.

Looking at the Winstone-Saldivar photo the other day, I was amazed at the card in their third fight in Aztec Stadium. Picture a card featuring Vicente Saldivar defending his 126 lb. title against Howard Winstone, Ruben Olivares against Ushiwakamaru Harada, Ernie Terrell against Manuel Ramos and Chucho Castillo against Bernardo Carraballo. In a word: Wow!

What happened to Saldivar after he retired? He had an incredibly low pulse rate and yet died young.

I agree bennie, although the the case of Lopez and Chancon my understanding is that they were always good friends. I believe they were on the same amateur team.

Saldivar finally was KO'd by John Barley Corn. The way my Mexican pals tell it,it was probably Jose Cuervo. He died of liver disease. Saw him lose his title to Shibata in Tijuana in a big upset. Saldivar said he got punched in the throat early in that fight and never recovered. That night, his strength,which he could always rely on late in a fight, wasn't there.

I was serious. Those pants should make a comeback. Look what they did for Pee Wee Herman. Besides, Quarry's pants are shorter than the ones you're wearin'.

Now a days being a school teacher you come across kids that want to try out for baseball,football,or basketball. But when I was at the Learning Center(Drop Out Recovery School),I had a kid that wanted to be a fighter. It was a while back, and I've forgotten his name. He was 17 and said he was serious about it. He said he was training at a gym in Imperial Beach,but I could never find the place. One day he came to school with a tape of him sparring with another kid. The kid he was sparring with was taller and had more boxing skills. My kid said the other kid had been fighting longer him. He never told me who was training him. The kid looked like a middle weight,but he might have been lighter.

One day the kid comes in and tells me he's in an amateur tournament at a gym on Market Street in Logan Heights. I went there ,and found the gym this time,but it was closed. I saw the kid after that and asked him what happened. He told me the tournament was moved somewhere else. I asked him how he did,and he told me he had to cancel out because he hurt his hand.

The kid left school after a month or so,and I lost track of him. I remember asking around if anyone heard of this kid,and no one seemed to know him. About ten years later I'm in the South Bay at a 7 Eleven and I hear someone yell out,"Hey Coach how's it going?"
It's the kid. I couldn't remember his name.
"Hey there he is. How's the boxing career?"
"I had to give it up. I got a girl pregnant and got married."
The kid wasn't a middle weight anymore. He had eaten his way into a full fledged heavyweight.
"Yeah,coach I really miss it. I wanted to be a fighter real bad."
I tried to make a joke of it.
"You should have used some precaution and put on a condom."
"Naw,I don't ever wear one. It's like feeling up a girl with boxing gloves."
Well I can tell you this. You'll never catch me feeling up a girl with boxing gloves. But once in a while I've had to use a condom.

Here is a little boxing trivia. The guy on the far right, shaking hands with Quarry is Joe "Shotgun" Shelton. Most boxers have some little oddity about there careers that relates to something bigger, and this was Shelton's. Muhammad Ali made his pro debut in Louisville, winning a six-round decision over a club fighter/policeman, named Tunney Hunsaker.

Less than two years after losing to Cassius Clay, Hunsaker is KOed by Joe Shelton, in the final round of a ten rounder. Hunsaker lapsed into a coma after the fight, and remained unconcious for nine days. Luckily, he came out of the coma, and eventually returned to his job as a Louisville Policeman. He died three years ago, at the age of 75.

Now this may not be earth shaking information, however, everybody asks me who the boxer is shaking hands with Jerry Quarry. Now you know.
