Classic fights I've watched recently

Tyson vs. Pinklon Thomas.

Thomas was a really great fighter. I actually scored round four for him.

BUT, he was not in Tyson's league...

yea i watched that too little while ago that fight, gives me visions of how aj v tyson would go.

Mark Breland vs Lloyd Honeyghan


Breland blitzed Honeyghan in 3 rounds to retain his World Welterweight title, Honeyghan down 6 times in all, down in the 1st from a long left jab of Breland, Honeyghan got up but was hurt and never recovered, Honeyghan was don twice more in the 2nd, first knockdown was that same jolting left jab of Breland which hurt him even more than the first KD, when he got up Breland tore in about him with both fists and a right had Honeyghan down again as the bell went


The end came in the 3rd, Honeyghan down 3 times, a right uppercut had him down seconds into the round and when he got up Breland trapped him in the corner unloading lightening quick combinations and it was left hooks which had Honeyghan down again, the end was near and Breland was pouring heavy pressure on Honeyghan who had to show a lot of heart not to go down again but it got too much and a final Breland right hand put Honeyghan down for a sixth and final time before it was stopped, tough night for Honeyghan but Breland oozed class

funny was watching llyoyd v curry , didnt realise how good honeyghan was, but will have to give that one a watch good fighters in that weight alawys is and that time

Kelly Pavlik vs Jermain Taylor 1, Pavlik was in huge bother in round 2 and could have been stopped had he taken a handful more clean power shots but he rallied superbly to take out Taylor in the 7th. Entertaining middleweight fight with good output from both men, plenty of give and take throughout.

Great fight. Pavlik showed some real toughness. He could have a greater career, unfortunately he wasn't able to keep focused.

Bernard Hopkins vs Antonio Tarver



Hopkins schools Tarver over 12 to become Lineal Light Heavyweight champ, absolute clinic from Hopkins, Tarver barely won a round, he was piss poor, pawed with the jab and missed time and again with wild southpaw lefts all night, genuinely hardly landed a worthwhile shot all night

Hopkins nullified all his work with ease and walked Tarver onto right hands all night and held whenever up close, Hopkins had Tarver touching down with the glove in the 5th after staggering him with a counter right hand, Tarver was looking busted up by the end and Hopkins run out a wide winner

Hopkins beats Wright by fairly wide UD to retain his Lineal Light Heavyweight title, closer fight than scores suggest, easily could've gone to Wright IMO, it was a poor spectacle, I remember that watching it live, it was never gonna be a classic with both these guys at this stage in their careers, righty v lefty to boot

Hopkins shouldve been penalised at least once for excessive holding, also boaring in with the head constantly as well, Wright was cut above the eye in the 3rd, Hopkins just jabbed and grabbed, a few shoe shine combos thrown in but it was ugly, at least Wright tried to box and showed the cleaner work although only slightly, he tried to jab, straight left and short hooks whenever up close, as i say poor watch no drama apart from Wright's cut, tough fight to score but seems Hopkins got the breaks from judges as well as ref

Ike Williams vs Beau Jack 1


Williams stops Jack in 6 to retain his World Lightweight title, brutal stoppage and a great fight with some class exchanges, Jack was aggressive and forced the pace, got up in Williams face and had a little success, Williams for the most part kept him on the end of the spearing jab and would bring the right hand into play, he looked quality

Right at the start of the 6th Williams came out guns blazing, both hands just unloaded on Jack who was got unawares, Williams forced him on the ropes where he teed off, forcing him into the corner where he hit Jack with clean shots to head and body from both hands, Jack's head was being rocked back, Williams even stopped to look at ref who ignored him, another few hard lefts and rights them eventually ref stopped it, shades of Griffith vs Paret 3


They fought 3 more times, all non title fights, William's won a 10 round SD in the rematch, 3rd fight was a draw and Williams stopped Jack after 8 in the fourth fight

Williams was a tremendous offensive fighter, the way he switched angles with little shifts of his feet and hips and switched his attacks was brilliant

Its funny but when I first saw it-live-I thought it was a pretty entertaining bout!

Perhaps I was waiting for little from them..thats why?

i thought it was a closer a fight too, b hop is like an old computer knows what to do , i mean the comentry blah blah, i thought winky was very active in in the fight, the only reason i watched the fight was cause of winky , because his movement allways makes fights watchable shame it never happen early though i still think bhop have his number

This fight....I was 14, and still leveled my predictions a lot on who hit harder so I thought it was going to be Julian's coronation for sure! (also the best of McCallum's career was yet to come)

McCallum proved me wrong but it was an absolute war! Also let me mention, believe it or not, this was in the middle of an about 10 year period where due to contracts between Don King, Bob Arum and all the Puerto Rican channels (who got back their investment because of revenue from advertisers) Puerto Ricans got to watch every single..I mean every single, from Roberto Duran-Sugar Ray Leonard I down to Thomas Hearns-Michael Olajide (maybe beyond that actually , as i moved from Puerto Rico the very next day after Hearns-Olayide) fight live and for free! Barry McGuigan-Eusebio Pedroza, Larry Holmes-Gerry Cooney, Holmes-Marvis Frazier, Hagler-Hearns,.except for local bouts which due to the law we could only get on radio (free also of course) we got to watch every single big fight for free.....great days!

And the local bouts we could watch free too a few days after on TV.

Julian Jackson vs Terry Norris



Jackson ices Norris in the 2nd to retain his World Super Welterweight title, what a KO Jackson showing again why many regard him as p4p hardest puncher of all time, Norris looked in total control too, dominated the 1st round, excellent movement and lightening quick accurate combinations had Jackson looking flummoxed, some quality work by Norris and the 2nd round was more of the same until Jackson sparked him

Norris was backed on the ropes when Jackson nailed him with a thundercunt of a right hand Norris was out on his feet, a left hook and right screw shot helped Norris on his way, infact it looked as if the thud on the canvas woke Norris up, he just about made count but no way could he continue, highlight reel KO from Jackson, seen it a few times but no less impressive

Decent left hook by Ghanian and fight is over after 30 sec round 1.

Michael Spinks V Larry Holmes 1.

Spinks's awkwardness was in full display.

Holmes just could not solve Spinks at all.

Larry tried to get his much vaunted jab into play, but it was useless against Michael.

Holmes's whole schtick was his jab which usually set up his big Right, but he seemed clueless once his piston like jab wasn't able to control Spinks.

Spinks fought a great fight and looked like the boss for most of it, despite being much smaller.

To be fair to Holmes, he was ageing, but I expected him to be more dominant.

I remember watching this fight live. I had it 145-141 for Spinks.

Lots of people believe Holmes got robbed on this one too, however. (I am among the many who think he won fight #2 as well)

Agreed.

I thought Spinks won both times too.

Holmes was better in the second fight and tried to boss Spinks more, but ultimately, Michael was too awkward and speedy for the ageing Larry.

Gerald McClellan vs Julian Jackson 1+2



McClellan stops Jackson in the 5th to become World Middleweight champ, great fight between 2 bangers, both guys sitting down on their punches from the opening bell, McClellan hurt Jackson with a right in the 1st, Jackson's legs wobbling then Jackson had McClellan backing up after landing a left, great opener

After that it was Jackson who looked in control he had McClellan holding on several times and McClellan was looking a bit uncomfortable, things spun on their head in the 5th when McClellan pole axed Jackson with a right, he smashed another left in to send him crashing down flat on his back, Jackson got up but he was still badly dazed McClellan set in about him and crashed another right to put him down, Jackson got up but was all over the shop, ref stopped it



McClellan blows away Jackson in a round in the rematch to retain his title, rocked him badly with a right seconds into the fight, had Jackson backed up on the ropes where he unloaded both barrels, must've hit Jackson with 25 unanswered punches to head and body, finally Jackson was giving a count when McClellan shoved him in the corner, Jackson never actually touched down and as I say it was a shove but the count was giving and it gave Jackson a slight breather, McClellan was never gonna let him off hook though, within seconds Jackson was backed up and a McClellan left downstairs folded him in half for the finish
