dookus wrote: 04 May 2020, 18:50 In the years before Audley, it had been so long since we'd had big success in the amateurs internationally that the public for a long time didn't pay much attention. As I remember it, even in the late 90s, most prospects were discussed more in relation to their achievement in the ABAs than international performances.

Hence the lack of hype around Woodhall / Reid etc - a medal here and there wasn't enough success to draw attention back to Olympic boxing. So despite achieving big things for British amateurs of that period, they still had to break into the pro game on the same terms, profile-wise, as those who'd done well domestically.

Then Audley won gold at the Olympics, by which time our last one had been back in 1968(!) That ushered in a new level of attention to the amateur sport. The Team GB setup and medal-based funding (with salaries for fighters) followed. What we have now is a whole upper strata of amateur fighters, with a whole high-profile machine behind them focused on Olympic success.

So these days, among the amateurs, public attention is focused on Team GB. That pool of fighters is where you find Olympic medals and, just as importantly, the exposure that comes. Promoters being attracted to convenience like the rest of us (and the ABAs being much lower-profile than they used to be), it's also where they focus their attention when looking for the next big thing to hype up.

All this means now Team GB's the only game in town, especially given how hard life is for prospects without backing. Good amateurs want to get into the Olympic squad more than anything and promoters gravitate toward that. The result is anyone with a medal (we get way more than we used to) gets the hype because that's where promoters' focus. I get the impression it's much harder to break through from outside that setup these days.

Bad thing, though? I dunno. We seem to be doing pretty well in the pros these days.

As good of a post I have read.

Woodhall and Reid provided an impetus... Big Aud and Amir sealed the deal. Lottery funding and the levels of structure allowed our amateurs realize their potential. What they do in the pro game depends on their individual makeup and how much they adapt. That why I can not understand why people h8 on Khan.... so many good fights... is it jealousy or because he an init unintellectual.

The amateurs have moved on a lot more than the ole Crystal Palace training facilities that is for sure. No more looking at ridiculously bigger diurectically challenged opponents in an east euro corner who seem like hercules.

The ABA’s are officially no longer seen as a major tournament by England Boxing, hence the podium boys not entering.

Never beat a single ex world champion lol.
Almost lost to Toka Clary? 2 of the judges in USA scored it 118-110.
Dickens was an outstanding amateur and many made him favourite against Barry. He got knocked out.
Barry beat Booth over 8 years ago. One judge scored it 120-109.
Barry stopped Claudio Marrero in his last fight who was interim WBA champion.

Hopefully you're back in school on 1 June.

Don’t recall that much Hype as such but I’ve always thought Galahad was Somewhat overrated and continue to be surprised at his high world ratings.
That’s the way the sport has become with multiple organisations, various champions and a plethora of titles to be won.
It seems easier now to manufacturer a career and get fighters into great positions - some would say great management taking the right fight at the right time and avoiding Certain fights until the right opportunity arises .
Earlier on in this thread Galahad was referred to as an undefeated British, commonwealth and European Champion. No doubt a great achievement but take a closer look . All three titles were vacant titles and all three titles were then vacated without a single defence yet alone a mandatory. He will be undefeated if he doesn’t fight and defend against anyone of note !
In fairness he can only beat who’s put in front of him and no doubt the failed drug test and subsequent ban didn’t help. .

I was surprised just how negative he was in the world title fight. What a fantastic opportunity but he appeared content to collect a pay day . His tactics stunk the place out and it’s a fight the fans simply don’t want to see again. Ideally I’d like him to fight the winner of the Dickens / Walsh fight next.

Brian Rose ,on the other hand won his British title by beating the then champion and Before moving on continued to proudly defend his title, including his mandatory challenger to win the title outright thus keeping the Lonsdale belt .
Perhaps old school thinking but Ive far more respect for that record .

And if you took an even close look you would see Frampton vacated the European when Barry became his mandatory :box:

If I’m not mistaken this was because he had a final eliminator for a world title before the Kiko rematch .
Either way IMO there’s far too much ducking and diving, protecting records at domestic level - lots of fighters too easily promoted to World Level .

not only self-proclaimed, there was an absolute craze on forums about him at the time. people really believe he was some sort of hero who was gonna save boxing and put the klits on their heads

his fights vs big nik and wlad are 2 of the most boring in hw history, he had one of the funniest excuses with full on toe on table stuff. i mean he beat chis and valuev so not like he was some total sh!t hw, he was still good, just fell way short of the hype he got at the time and ended up a mocked figure. it was a bit funny how his fanbois constantly went after wlad for being boring but then he was even more negative than wladdy

That is a good call, will always go down as one of two fighters who started as betting favourite vs Calzaghe, I couldn't understand for the life of me how the bookies saw him as favourite.

The other being the biggest hype job in world boxing - Jeff Lacy - I fell for that one though.

The entire British Light Middle scene of about 15-20 years ago. Good fighters, but all / most hyped as top world class at one stage. Farnell, Roberts, Lockett, Williams, Stone, Alexander, Takaloo - I've probably forgotten someone. Lockett was the one I believed the hype the most.

Unlike Hatton / Witter and the Lee / Macklin / Barker / Saunders / Murray - these light middles were not really world class so should have fought each other.

I fell for the James Hare hype hook line and sinker.

Another one I fell for was Patrick Mullings - really good fighter, but he went on a run after the Oliver defeat which actually (for me anyway) made me believe he was the best of the Brodie / Oliver / Mullings trio.

Adrian Dodson was another - think most pundits tipped him over Wright.

None of those were really hype jobs as it was big step up in classes and they weren't expected to win.
On the other hand we were told that Olympians Harrison and Gavin were guaranteed to be world champs and both only won lesser titles.
AForce especially had a huge amount of hype behind him and launched the BBC comeback into boxing.
Froch on the other hand went a bit under the radar, probably due to Hennessy.
Khan had a lot of hype but essentially lived up to it.

The Hearn hype train has always been huge but that is them doing their job well.
I remember fighting on a bill with the Delaney brothers and Georgie Smith, all decent fighters but I will have to dig out the programme, they were all being compared to hall of fame greats like SRL, Hearns and Hagler!

Yes I know - it was the same with Purdy and Rose though.

Out of those Lockett was hyped the most as a prospect, I even remember there were some comparisons with Don Curry with his timing. By the time of his world title, he had already had a few defeats.

I cannot remember his name - but wasn't there a guy with the surname of george in the last 20 years who got some promotion from sky. No defence - or George somthing (not George Smith) - I think I remember George Hillyard?

Edit - and we had the heavyweight again of 20 years ago, fought out of Britain, think he was with Maloney (but not sure) was Roman Greenberg rings a bell.
