It’s even worse that I read that in his bloody voice.sweetmagee wrote: ↑17 Aug 2025, 04:00 "We'd like to see this one again wouldn't we'" - every time there's a fight that's vaguely competitive
I think the problem is that he's not just bad but he's constant and loud while also bad. It's impossible to ignore and it's distracting. If he was bad but was not shouting constantly it wouldn't matter as much.
This. If you like someone jabbering non stop about nothing in particular while staying to a pre fight narrative regardless of what's happening in the ring, exaggerating/lying ( everyone on their feet - handful at ringside looking at their phones ) and screaming excitedly that ' Jake Paul is in the house ' like a 15 year old schoolgirl, you must be very happy indeed.
It’s like listening to a crying baby in the background…sooner or later it starts to grate on you to the point of distraction
Even if we did manage to hear it, Smith would probably start explaining to the viewers that “blowing it” was not a reference to smoking or vaping, and is not in any way insensitive to those who may have been affected by lung cancer.PredatorHayds wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 09:25 When rarely we finally get a chance to listen in to the corners between rounds he talks non-stop.
We would of missed ‘You’re blowing it son’ with the Growler Prowler on Comms.
I think maybe there’s a generational divide - younger DAZN subscribers who have been brought up in an age where non stop noise and absurd hyperbole is the done thing for commentators will probably think Smith is no different than the pitiful cheerleaders on Sky football matches telling us non stop how exciting the PL is.TheLeprechaun wrote: ↑17 Aug 2025, 14:28 Something has to be done at this point. This self-absorbed cretin has been allowed to spout his non stop nonsense for far too long and ruined boxing nights for UK boxing fans for decades. Are the powers that be getting off on Smith annoying us all or something? He needs to be removed as a commentator somehow. Surely some kind of petition or pressure on DAZN from customers could do it. The tosspot needs to go.
I remember him starting off on Sky, doing the warm up fights.CaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 15:22I think maybe there’s a generational divide - younger DAZN subscribers who have been brought up in an age where non stop noise and absurd hyperbole is the done thing for commentators will probably think Smith is no different than the pitiful cheerleaders on Sky football matches telling us non stop how exciting the PL is.TheLeprechaun wrote: ↑17 Aug 2025, 14:28 Something has to be done at this point. Older subscribers who can remember commentary greats from the old days are understandably irked by his lowest common denominator style
I’ve said it before but it bears repeating, Smith’s your quintessential company man - he’s commentating in the manner asked of him by his employers so DAZN are the ones to blame.Coco wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 16:18I remember him starting off on Sky, doing the warm up fights.CaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 15:22I think maybe there’s a generational divide - younger DAZN subscribers who have been brought up in an age where non stop noise and absurd hyperbole is the done thing for commentators will probably think Smith is no different than the pitiful cheerleaders on Sky football matches telling us non stop how exciting the PL is.TheLeprechaun wrote: ↑17 Aug 2025, 14:28 Something has to be done at this point. He was defended saying that he is a nice guy, had no experience of boxing, needed time to learn.
Since then his script has been the same
Johnny Nelson is a company man too, but is eloquent and knows a lot about boxingCaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 17:19I’ve said it before but it bears repeating, Smith’s your quintessential company man - he’s commentating in the manner asked of him by his employers so DAZN are the ones to blame.Coco wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 16:18I remember him starting off on Sky, doing the warm up fights.CaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 15:22

I’d suggest voting with your feet but now DAZN have a virtual monopoly on uk boxing that’s not really an option is it
It’s a real bugbear of mine that in an age of digital technology the broadcasters who we pay top dollar to don’t give us the option of commentary free sport. But sadly they’re never gonna do that because the commentator’s first job is to hype the product..Coco wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 17:25Johnny Nelson is a company man too, but is eloquent and knows a lot about boxingCaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 17:19I’ve said it before but it bears repeating, Smith’s your quintessential company man - he’s commentating in the manner asked of him by his employers so DAZN are the ones to blame.

I appreciate they need a company man, but surely they could do so much better.
Even Bunce showed his company credentials in the Fraudley era, and would be significantly better than Smith.
Bunce might have his moments, but live TV is tough, the man was great at Setanta. I for one certainly have never turned the sound down when he is speaking.
I've activated turned the TV off many times when Smith is speaking.
Just to let the viewers know ‘Sugar’ is just a nickname and is no way a jibe at the millions who suffer from Diabetes around the world.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 10:31Even if we did manage to hear it, Smith would probably start explaining to the viewers that “blowing it” was not a reference to smoking or vaping, and is not in any way insensitive to those who may have been affected by lung cancer.PredatorHayds wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025, 09:25 When rarely we finally get a chance to listen in to the corners between rounds he talks non-stop.
