Now that's what you call a draw.

In terms of heavyweight historical significance, or the WOW factor, for me it'd be

Ali - Was there ever a more famous sportsman on the planet than Ali in the 70's? Absolutely huge - One in 100 million - he had it ALL.

Louis - Dream up the perfect heavyweight champ of the 30's/40's and Joe was it. The 2nd Schmelling fight says it all.

Dempsey - A traveling hobo who hops off a freight train and smashes his way to the heavyweight title. Put Jack in with the local bar bouncer, and a million people would turn up to watch.

Tyson - Brought the heavyweight division up from it's knees in the 80's - at his peak, a real life wrecking machine who electrified the divison with the type of violence not seen since Sonny Liston. Unforgetable.

some debate mate, try being nice you'd be amazed by the reception you will get instead of calling everyone queers.

by the way if 14 stone and 6 ft is little then you are sadly mistaken.

my first post was in fact a sensible argument in reponse to your obvious favouratism of Tyson, not attacking not nasty, its you that turns these things into a farce by being so obnoxious so dont be surprised if people want to jumnp and give you a virtual "kicking".

now try gowing up you may find peope actually like you rather than pity you.

That's a good post

So, if we are trying to find an objective way of measuring the "greatness" of any fighter ( if such a notion is not specious ) then there seem to be a number of factors

1)RECORD
a) Louis
b) Dempsey
c) Ali
d) Tyson

2)LONGEVITY AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL
a) Ali
b) Tyson ( nearly 20 years and still being talked of as a poss WBO)
c) Marciano
d) Louis/Lewis
( Dempsey marked down for periods of inactivity, more than Marciano, no? )

3)SKILLS
a) Ali/Louis tie
c) Lewis/Holmes ( tie )

4)MONEY MAKING ABILITY
a) Tyson
b) Ali
c) Dempsey
d) Holyfield/Lewis

5)IMPACT IN THE SPORT
a) Tyson
b) Ali
c) Dempsey

6)IMPACT OUTSIDE OF THE SPORT
a) Ali
b) Tyson

Obviously this is a bit quickly drawn out and crude, but it does I think show that Tyson has a place amongst the greats ( as a fighter/boxer not necessarily a human being ) and in terms of his sheer impact on a sport that was profoundly moribund at the time of his emergence, he is up there with Ali.

Maxie, have you gone mad. Whilst these are PRECISELY the creteria I've always used in rating champions (and they are similar to the ring magazine criteria used over the years), HOW ON EARTH DOES TYSON RATE HIGHER FOR LONGEVITY?

Just because people are still talking about Tyson as a possible champion, means nothing, he hasn't beaten a top 20 ranked heavyweight since Razor Ruddock for fucks sake. You have Tyson and Marciano rated higher than Louis and Lewis!

What!!! Louis was the best in the world for longer than any man, Ali is next, Holmes and Lewis are next.

In terms of money making ability, Ali made more for his time than anyone, and Dempsey didn't have PPV, cable TTV and Satellite technology. In relative terms Ali is the biggest earner by far.

You are really sad, you wouldn't know the maening of the word debate if it came and kicked you in the arse.... your idea of a debate is to call people who disagree with you queers... what is the reason for your obssessive remarks about homosexuals?... seems to me you're trying to hide something mate!.... Random terap quote, listen up Grimm:
terap wrote:
You are exhibiting clear signs of mental illness.

This is not YOUR site.

You cannot control what others write here.

That is up to those who run this site.

This feminine characteristic of demanding control of what others think and say is out of control in you.

You are making an ass of yourself with your fixation on what another poster writes.

I suggest you do the following:

Get pregnant if you can.

Have some children.

Regulate every word the children say---order them not to have certain opinions--and demand that they think exactly as you do (that last is a revolting thought, isn't it).

When they get to a certain age where you no longer have absolute control over them, you will be in trouble again. Only solution would be to have some more.

Start taking your fertility pills.

If you think you are somehow going to control what others here write and think, you are out of your hysterical, feminine mind.

Terap was an interesting character he had some great stories and knowledge about the Philly Boxing scene of the 1970's.

But it was almost impossible to talk or debate Boxing with him as it always felt he was argueing or just talking AT you.

I admired the mans passion for the sport but he lacked the ability to see others peoples point of view, or so it seemed to me.

I wonder if he ever visits this site?

I still sort of miss him.

Yeah I remember Terap, I had quite a few 'conversations' with him!. The difference between Grimm and Terap is that Terap didn't seem as sexually twisted    and Terap actually seemed to have a good knowledge of boxing but could not stand to be contridicted  . He also hated Ali!. :-? .. which was the main reason why I crossed swords with him.   .. we must have argued for a month about Ali, he claimed nearly every Ali fight was fixed!!!.... :x :x :x

Yes Terap hated Ali with a deep burning passion, that's fpr sure.

One of my earliest thread about Ron Lyle soon turned into a Ali shill, media, Terap rant.

Great post absolutely spot on :TU: and now my tuppence worth. just reading this thread, how many other fighters have bought out the kind of emotions in people that Tyson has, love him or hate him everyone has an opinion of him good...or...bad. Just that has got to put him up there with the very best. Add his predacious demeanor and explosive finishing......yeah he's earned his place. ps what's a baffoon? Is it a bit like a buffoon with a a :D :D :D

I'm sure. In fact, just the thought of it makes me want to lock myself into my bedroom and curl up in a fetal position under the covers in my bed and slowly starve to death because I am too terrified to peek out of the covers much less to leave the room to get something to eat...it's just a fear that I cannot seem to conquer.
