Our pal Danny . . .

I received a nice e-mail from our pal Danny in the U.K. today.
He says he still drops in and keeps up on our thread.
He's not in any pain at the moment, awaiting test results.

I know our Wildhawke may be facing the fight of his life.
I know we are all in his corner.

Cheers, Danny :TU:

On track for 1000 pages . . .

This thread will celebrate it's second anniversary on February 14th (Valentine's Day).
Looks like we'll reach a thousand pages by that date.

I doubt there has ever been a thread on this forum (or any boxing forum) with as many posts? (24,204 at the moment.)
There are older threads on this Forum, and on others, but do any have our volume, content or quality? Nah!
Thanks to Boxrec for providing us with this opportunity to share boxing. It seems to work for everybody involved.

Pacquiao to face Clottey, not Mayweather

By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports

The super fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is officially dead, as Top Rank CEO Bob Arum said he closed a deal Sunday for Pacquiao to meet Joshua Clottey in Dallas at Cowboys Stadium on March 13.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he is thrilled to land a bout featuring Pacquiao, who is widely regarded as the top boxer in the world. And while he’s disappointed he won’t be hosting a Pacquiao fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. as he had hoped, he said he doesn’t see Pacquiao-Clottey as a consolation prize.

“This is a very significant fight and I’m truly ecstatic,” Jones told Yahoo! Sports by telephone on Sunday. “From the time we began work on the stadium, I envisioned bringing boxing here. We have a very large Hispanic fan base surrounding us and they’re very loyal boxing fans. I think they’ll be thrilled with this event.”

Jones said he considered naming the stadium Vaqueros de Cowboys, which is Spanish for Dallas Cowboys, in homage to the many Hispanics in the area.

Arum and his stepson, Top Rank president Todd duBoef, attended the Cowboys’ playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday and sat with Jones as his guests in his private box.

Arum said he met former President George W. Bush at the game, who said he would attend the fight if he does not have a speaking engagement that night.

“He was excited about the fight and he said to me, ‘Who needs [Mayweather]?’ ” Arum said.

Arum said he was amazed by the new stadium, which will initially be configured to seat around 45,000. That figure can increase, he said, if there is sufficient demand. The top ticket will be $700.

The ring will be placed at what would be the 50-yard line.

Jones said attendance at the new facility has been far better than expected, not only for football but for all events it has hosted since opening last year.

“We’ve underestimated the attendance for every event we’ve done, whether it’s been soccer or whatever,” Jones said. “I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that we can” draw at least 45,000.

Arum said he has a memorandum of understanding with each fighter. A Top Rank attorney is drawing up the contracts and Pacquiao and Clottey are expected to formally sign in the next few days.

Arum said the fight will be on pay-per-view, but he’s not certain if it will be distributed by HBO. He said he plans to hold conversations in the next several days, but said several large media companies have reached out to him.

Still unclear is when Mayweather will fight and against whom. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who represents Mayweather, said Mayweather still plans to fight on March 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, which was held for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

Schaefer said he’s reached out to several opponents, whom he would not identify, and said he hopes to reach a deal in the coming week. He said he also has had conversations with HBO, though he anticipates the Mayweather fight also would be on pay-per-view.

“I’m disappointed, but life goes on and the sport goes on,” Schaefer said. “We’ve had the March 13 date for a long time. We were planning to put [Bernard] Hopkins and [Roy] Jones on that date initially, so that’s been a date we’ve been planning as a pay-per-view date for quite a while now.

“We’re having conversations with HBO and we’ll have to see how it develops. But we can still make a very good event featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr. and that’s what we’re going to work hard to do.”

The proposed Pacquiao-Mayweather bout was derailed largely by disagreements over which drug-testing program the fighters would undergo in the weeks before the fight.

Wherever the fault may lie, I give credit to Manny Paquiao for taking on Joshua Clottey. Clottey's last fight ended in a loss to Miguel Cotto whom Paquiao has already beaten. Clottey's loss to Cotto was somewhat controversial and Cotto did take some punches he might not have ordinarily taken had he not been gun shy after the beating he took from Antonio Margarito. A win over Cotto does not automatically mean a win over Clottey. Clottey is one tough fighter. It should be a good fight.

The proposed Pacquiao-Mayweather bout was derailed largely by disagreements over which drug-testing program the fighters would undergo in the weeks before the fight.

So an "ecstatic" Jerry Jones says that the now fight between Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey(the deal with Mayweather fell through) is "very significant" and besides,George Bush told him"who needs Mayweather?"

The article said that the fight was "derailed largely by disagreements over which drug testing the fighters would undergo."

I'm not buying any of this. I don't want to see Manny fight Clottey. And whoever Mayweather is going to fight ,I don't want to see that either. Pacquiao/Clottey is not a significant fight and the public needs a fight between Manny and Floyd regardless of what George Bush says.

And another thing. If you're not on the juice why would there be an argument over drug testing prior to the fight?

But you know what? The dumb fans are going to get all revved up over this fight and everyone involved is going to make millions. I hope this Clottey knocks the crap out of Pacquiao.

Collateral Damage . . .

Thanks, Randy. It was a tough fight.
We both got busted up pretty good in an eight-rounder.
I finished with a broken nose, left eye swollen shut, cut over right eye. I urinated blood most of the night.
And those little bumps you never hear about all over your head from butts, elbows, etc.
My pale English/Irish skin had glove and rope burns here and there.

That was the most damage I suffered in a bout, and I won a unanimous decision.
Mel Epstein was in the corner that night, along with Johnny Villaflor. Johnny took care of the cut, Epstein was blind.
In the drssing room afterwards, my father unlaced my shoes as I rested on a table.
The doctor had left the building to accompany a boxer to the hospital that had been KOed in the main event.
I was "out on my feet" in the shower. Thought I'd just stepped in before Mel told me I'd been in for 15 minutes. Get out of there!

Mel was left to close the cut. Dr. Jack Useem had left the building. As I mentioned, Mel was legally blind.
Thank God the old bastid didn't own a needle & thread.
He bitched and moaned while attempting to create a "butterfly" using tape and gauze.
Mel's hands shook like a Parkinson's patient. He was angry the doctor had left. I assure you I certainly wasn't pleased.

As Mel bitched thru the procedure. He condemned me for my "Saturday Night Special" (Mel's reference to my being over-sexed.)
Mel had no idea that less than 48 hours before the match, I was carried out of a bar over the shoulder of my buddy, a former USC running back.
I was so drunk, and so badly affected, that what should have been an easy win turned into a nightmare. I took a lot of unneccesary punishment.

I was twenty years old that night. Had been fighting pro for more than two years.
Mel told me before we entered the ring that night . . . "You ain't right. I can see in your eyes, you ain't right!"

Mel was right.

Nacho Beristain and Rafael Marquez Go Their Separate Ways!
January 8, 2010 by Felipe Leon

The two time world champion Rafael Marquez announced that his working relationship with the famed trainer Nacho Beristain had ended. Marquez stated that he has not began training for the fourth installment of his war with Israel Varquez which will take place on May 22nd in Los Angeles, CA, but he is deciding in which gym he will begin his preparation for this important bout.

“I got tired of him not paying attention to me. I practically trained myself, he was always paying attention to my brother and when it was time to train me, he would go into his office,” Marquez stated when quizzed about the reason for the rupture.

Rafael mentioned that he still feels a deep love for his former trainer but that he was ready to make some changes in the twilight of his career.

When asked if he was going to bring in another trainer, he stated that he would not and that his father, Don Rafael Marquez, who taught his brother and he how to fight, will be helping him as he has done since the beginning of his career.

“I have been thinking in what gym I will start training at but I still have not decided,” Marquez said. “Except for Nacho not being there anymore, my team will remain the same. I have thought about asking Daniel Zaragoza to train me but I have not decided yet.”

He also confirmed that Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions will be in charge of that aspect of his career and not only does he want to face off against Israel Vazquez for the fourth time but in September or October, go against Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico.

“There is big plans for my career and this year should be one of the biggest of my career. I will continue going forward and I do want to leave it clear that there is no bad feelings between Nacho and I,” Marquez concluded.

I feel I have to say something about this picture and the obit that Frank posted a couple of days ago. I'm the last one to give advice on relationships or give my opinions on them, but I know a lot of people would take a dim view of a 15 year old girl with a man in his forties who, although was a big star(once), was seperated from his wife and addicted to alcohol and morphine.

So I won't shake my head. It was between Flynn, his wife ,and the 15 year old. Besides, there's an old saying about this kind of relationship. It's called "Five,Ten,and Twenty." Five minutes of fun. Ten minutes before the judge. And twenty years in the cooler.

CINCO DIEZ Y VEINTY

Like I said. Five Ten And Twenty with a younger girl. Five minutes of fun. Ten minutes before the judge. Then twenty years in jail. Oh,in these times it's probably a lot less. The campus cop at the high school I was working at was doing it with a 17 year old coed. She didn't press charges. The cop got probation. However, he's not a cop anymore.

Down in Mexico where my wife is from,a relationship with a young girl could result in bloodshed. Mexican fathers aren't shy about shooting a wolf who's taken advantage of the father's apple of his eye. My brother in law was shot in the foot by his fiancee's father when my brother in law came to the house. Later they got married, but my brother in law still shows the scar.

The above "heart breakers" are the daughters of my sister in law's sister. The picture was taken at a quincienera. If you want to find the likes of these two, just say you're going to give a party and put on some cumbia music. The next thing you'll know is every beauty in the vicinity will be out on the dance floor.

As far as the two pictured,I just think about "what if?" The truth is I can't stand the sight of my own blood.
